Chapter 8 A few months had gone since that first doctor’s appointment.  Matt still went to the doctor with Cassidy when he wasn’t on the road.  And he called and checked on her once a day.  Their relationship wasn’t a romantic one, it was strictly platonic if you could imagine.  The two had become the best of friends, as close as could be.  Matt and Jeff however still weren’t talking much.  They spoke at work only because they had to, but as soon as a show was over, they completely parted ways without speaking.  Matt was still furious with Jeff for running out on Cassidy and Jeff was equally mad at Matt for stepping in and taking care of her.  It was even hard for them to work together as a team, so the WWF writers split them up.  At one point in their "break up", they had to wrestle each other.  The match was a hit with the fans, they really sold the story.  But what the fans didn’t know was that they weren’t acting.  That match became so violent that officials had to pull Matt and Jeff apart before they seriously hurt each other.  But now, they just steered clear of each other as much as possible.  This feud between the brothers was also wearing on their father.  They weren’t a family anymore.  Jeff wouldn’t come to his father’s house if Matt was there.  Their family dinners and occasional breakfasts were a thing of the past.  Cassidy had come to realize this and felt extremely guilty.  It was her fault.  She had broken up this family.  Matt tried to assure her that it wasn’t her fault, but she still felt guilty.  Gilbert wouldn’t hardly speak to her anymore because of it.  She felt like a complete outcast.  The only person she had left in this world, was Matt.  Cassidy had just returned from her doctor’s appointment where she found out what she was having.  Matt had wanted so badly to be there with her, but he couldn’t get out of work.  She could hardly stand it, she just had to tell him so she picked up the phone and called his cell.  Matt was sitting in the locker room talking to some of  his co-workers as they waited for Vince to come in and give them their daily pep talk when his cell phone rang.  "Hello?" "Hey, Matt." An involuntary smile spread across his face when he heard her voice, "Hey, Cass.  How’d it go?" "Fine.  I found out what I’m having." "You did?  What is it?" "Are you sure you want to know?" "Cass!!  You know I’m dying over here." "It’s boy.", she squealed with delight. "Wow.  A boy."  Matt sat there and reveled in the thought.  It was almost as if he were the proud Papa as he beamed with pride. "Yeah." "Well, you got what you wanted.  Are you happy?" "How can you even ask that.  Of course I am." About that time, Vince walked in and gave his usual greeting to everyone. "Cass, I gotta go, Vince is here.  I’ll call you later tonight when I get back to the hotel." "Okay.  Be careful." "I will.  Bye." As he hung up, he didn’t realize that his brother had overheard his conversation  as he sat right behind him.  Jeff didn’t like the way he was feeling.  It was almost as if he was jealous and he didn’t like it one bit.  The meeting went on as usual.  When Vince left, everyone got up and headed to the buffet room to get something to eat before the show. As Matt was about to walk out, Jeff grabbed him by the arm, "Hey." Matt looked at him strangely, "Yeah?" "I accidentally over heard your conversation earlier.", Jeff explained. Matt thought for a minute before realizing which conversation he was talking about, "Yeah?" "She’s having a boy?", Jeff asked.   Matt was a little angry that Jeff was even asking, "Yep." "Wow.", Jeff said.  Matt couldn’t stand there and listen to his brother pretend as if he cared, "Is that all you wanted?" Jeff looked at Matt with hurt in his eyes, "Yeah."  This wedge that was between them was killing Jeff.  He and Matt use to be so close.  Not only were they brothers but they were best friends as well - but not anymore.  He watched his brother walk away.
