Chapter 5

Cassidy ran inside her house and slammed the door.  Never in a million years did she think that Jeff would have acted like that.  Sure, she knew that he wouldn’t be crazy about the idea of having a baby, but she didn’t think it would be the end of their relationship either.  Her whole world seemed to be coming down around her.  The man she loved, the man she thought was her life had torn it apart.  What was she going to do now?  She was still standing in the living room lost in thought when there was a knock at the door.

"What now?", she said to herself.

"Cass?", Matt’s voice called from outside.

Opening the door only enough to stick her head out she told him, "Matt, I really want to be alone right now."

"Okay.", he said, "I just wanted to make sure you were okay, well, you know what I mean."

But before she could respond, she felt extremely sick.  Covering her mouth she quickly ran to the bathroom leaving the door wide open.  Kneeling in front of the toilet, she held her hair back and heaved unproductively.  When the sickness had passed, she stood up and washed her face.  The taste still lingering in her mouth, she quickly brushed her teeth.

"You okay?", Matt asked from the hallway.

She nodded.  Still a little light headed and completely exhausted, she decided to lay down.  Matt sat down beside her on the bed.  Though she felt as if she had no more tears to shed, still she cried, "Maybe he’s right."

"Who?", Matt asked.

"Jeff, maybe he’s right.  Maybe I’m not strong enough to do this alone.", she sobbed.

"Don’t say that.  He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.", Matt stated.

Cassidy turned and looked Matt in the eyes, "What if he’s right?", she asked.

Matt sighed, "You ARE strong enough Cass.  If this is what you want, then you can do it.  Don’t let him make you think any different."

She didn’t say anything only looked down.  Matt put his hand under her chin and gently raised her face to look at him, "I mean it, Cass."  She nodded.  "I know you want to be alone, so I’ll go.  But call me if you need anything….ANYTHING.", he insisted.  Once again she nodded.

Matt stood up and started to walk out.  As much as Cassidy wanted to be alone, she didn’t want to ten times as bad.  "Matt.", she called after him.

"That was quick.", he said with a laugh trying to lighten the mood.

She smiled slightly but it didn’t last, "Can you stay.  Just for a little while longer?  I mean, if you need to leave I understand."

He smiled softly as he walked over to the bed and laid down beside her, "How bout I stay until you fall asleep?"

"I’d like that.", she said.  As she closed her eyes, she whispered, "Thanks, Matt."

He stroked her hair until she fell asleep and then he slipped out of her room and went home.  He was up half the night thinking of how he could possibly help Cass, besides beating some sense into his little brother’s head.  I smile crept across his face as the thought hit him.  He knew exactly what he was going to do.
