SOMEONE SOMEWHERE SOON WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU by Enola

PART 12

It’s 11.37 am when you open your eyes lazily. You’d think you had a horrible nightmare if your head wouldn’t ache so much. You can hardly believe everything really happened last night. Not only went to a club with a total stranger, you also drank so much to get drunk! You’re deeply disappointed with you. You treated Shane so badly while he was just worried about you. Nothing would have ever happened if you had gone back home with him.

The door of your room slowly opens and you see Shane walking towards you. He sits down on your bed and strokes your hair gently as he always does when you’re sad,
“How do you feel?” he breathes,
“Terribly sick!” you mumble. It’s not only because of that terrible hangover. There’s also something else that makes you feel so bad.

Shane’s filled the bath for you sure of the fact you will feel a bit better later. Having removed your pyjamas you quickly enter the tub. You think Shane must have poured half a bottle of bubbles bath as there’s almost more foam than water in it! You throw your head back and lean against the wall and close your eyes hoping to fall asleep at once and get rid of that massive headache. That’s not possible as there’s a knock at the door and Shane ask you if he can come in. You give your approval, so he enters. He sits down on the stood you usually use when you wash the kids and since he doesn’t say anything you begin,

“How did he find me?”
“I phoned him ‘cos I didn’t know what to do, where looking for you”
“You shouldn’t have to. It’d have been better if you had found me!”
“I wouldn’t have ever found you without his help, but you know that, don’t you?”
You perfectly know he’s right, but you won’t ever admit it.
“What would have happened if James hadn’t got?” he adds a while later,
“What should I do? Thank him?” you reply quite annoyed, “Well, I’m sorry Shane, I can’t! How can I thank him if he was about to do the same a month ago?”
“Did you ask Adam to stop?”
“Of course!”
“Did he?”
“No!”
“That’s the difference Monica! James stopped immediately when you ask him to. I’m sure you know why.” After a pause he adds getting up, “By the way, don’t worry. He’s going to Cardiff for some months. He won’t bother you anymore!” So, having spoken he leaves the bathroom.

What an idiot! You should be grateful to Shane for everything he continually does for you.

While you’re going downstairs you perceive the disgusting smell of coffee that makes you feel even worse. Entering the kitchen you find Shane in there, so you sit down. He pours some coffee into a cup and places it on the table in front of you.

“You must be joking!” you exclaim, “You know I hate coffee, especially on morning!”
“Drink it! That’s the only thing that may help you a bit!” he says,
“I’d rather a shot just here in my temple!” you say with a hint of sarcasm in your voice,
“That’s the stupidest thing you…” you begins quite upset, but you stop him,
“I was kidding!”
“You shouldn’t either say in jest anything like that!”
“OK. Cool it! You’re fully right! I’m sorry. I won’t ever say it again. Promise!” you smile to reassure him about the fact you weren’t talking seriously at all.

But, suddenly, the smile in your face disappears at once when something happened last night comes to mind. You tell Shane that Adam poured some white powder into your glass. You don’t know what it was, probably cocaine, but whatever it was you didn’t drink it. You wonder what happened to you as you have never behaved like that and you have always thought you couldn’t ever done anything like that. Last night everything happened without you could realise that. Adam seemed so nice at the very beginning, talkative, funny and kind. You just left everything else behind because you didn’t want to think about your problems for a while and unconsciously you lost control little by little. Before he persuaded you to drink, then you accepted to leave with him. But when you were dancing and he kissed you a part of you felt out of place, but the other pushed you to drink again. Then, when he handed you your glass you heard a voice inside you saying
'Monica what the fuck are you doing? You can’t do it!' It’s true that James got in the nick of time and you don’t want to think about what would happen if he hadn’t, but you can’t either forget what he told you.

You have understood that drinking and trusting people too much is not for you. The others must accept you as you ARE and if they don’t want to…who cares! You are tired of giving an explanation for everything you do or don’t do. Having drunk almost all your coffee you tell Shane to go with you to your bedroom. You take one of your CD’s and put it on you CD player and let Shane listen to a song which can speak for you,
“I’m free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I’ll sing the blues if I want
I’m free to say whatever I
Whatever I like
If it’s wrong or right it's alright”

That means that, for a bit, you’ll spend more time all by yourself as you were used to do before you arrived in London.

Everything seems to be alright during the following weeks as you can say you’re almost always good-humoured. There is just one thing that worries you a bit. Shane’s a little strange. He’s quite silent and thoughtful and when you talk to him you have the impression he’s not listening to you at all. But every time you ask him if it’s alright he replies it is. Finally, one day, as you have pressured him a bit, he confesses he has met someone and he feels very good this person. You don’t believe your ears! Nothing could have ever made you feel happier!

A couple of days later he asks you if you like going out with him. He suggests going to the cinema or anything else you want to do will be fine with him.
“I thought you were
busy tonight!”
“Erm…yeah…I was actually! My friend has to work, unfortunately!” he replies a bit embarrassed
“Oh! I suppose your
friend has a name…” you say inquisitively,
“Erm…o’ course! Chris.”
“Chris? Nice name!” you grin, but as you still are not satisfied you go on, “And…what does Chris do?”
“Chris is…erm…Chris is…a paediatrician”
“Oh Jesus!” you laugh, “You surely have a lot in common!”
“Yeah”

Since you have understood that Shane has no intention to say more about his new
friend you think you’d better stop your interrogation because it wouldn’t be nice and because you don’t like poking your nose into other people’s lives. You hate the fact the others can poke their noses into your life, consequently if you’d do that it’d be fair. It’s his life and he can see whoever he wants to. You just want him to be happy because he has a heart of gold and he deserves someone who loves him in a special way. His suggestion, the one to go the cinema sounds very interesting. You do feel like going out as you think you have spent even too much time at home.

Some days later you are at home all alone. The children are at school, Olivia and George have gone to the shopping centre and Shane’s gone…erm…well, he didn’t tell you where he’d go actually! You are at home because you have to iron a huge pile of clothes! It’s unbelievable the number of sweaters, jeans, shirts you have to iron every week…without counting children’s school uniforms!

Suddenly the bell rings. You wonder who it can be since Olivia, George and Shane have their keys. They wouldn’t ever ring the bell. Opening the door you find a quite pretty red-haired girl with two big green eyes smiling at you.
“Hello! You must be Monica!” she says smiling kindly.
“Yeees…” you mumble thinking about who she could be since she knows who you are, but you are completely sure you haven’t ever met her before.
“Shane spoke to me a lot about you!” she adds.

So…Shane spoke to her about you…One thing is sure. She’s Irish as well. You can’t understand that just from her looks, but especially from her accent. She must be one of Shane’s sisters, he has 3 after all!

“I’m Chris!” she says a while later,
“Chris?” you ask amazed.
HANG ON! None of Shane’s sisters is called Chris…
“Yes. I thought Shane had spoken to you about me!”
“Well…ehm…he told me something about a paediatrician called Chris…”
“It’s me!” she grins
“Pardon?”

FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE! CHRIS IS A GIRL!!!

You have to say you didn’t expect that! You apologise to her saying it’s been a bad day for you, so you invite her to enter. You tells her Shane’s gone out, but she can wait for him if she wants to. She says she can stay for a while as she has to be in hospital within an hour. You talk for a bit about this and that and just when she has to go away Shane arrives. As soon as he sees her turns pale. He’s extremely embarrassed.

“Why the hell didn’t you tell me Chris was a girl?” you ask him after she has left,
“Erm…try to understand…it wasn’t easy!”

You do understand. But, you are very amazed too! Since you have met each other he decides to tell you everything.
They have known for about ten years. They met at college in Dublin and they fell in love almost at once. Chris has been his first and unique girlfriend, he did love her immensely. Two years later they broke up. He has never talked to you about her because he thought he had forgotten about her. He suffered so much after they broke up, although they decided that by mutual consent. He realised he couldn’t have ever loved any other girl. When he saw her again in a pub he realised he hadn’t ever stopped thinking of her and talking to her he has understood he still is in love with her.

“How old were you when...erm...if you don’t mind me asking...”
“Nineteen...almost twenty...you know...my rigid Catholic upbringing...”
“No sex before the marriage?” you inquire,
“Exactly!” he smiles, “But you are a Catholic too, aren’t you?”
“Erm...well...more or less! I’m a Catholic, but not the kind of
Catholic...if you know what I mean...everyone has to decide when to do it, no matter the age...but do it just after the marriage...I mean...isn’t it ridiculous?”
Shane agrees with you. You are very happy for him because you think it’s beautiful he has met his sweetheart again. He’s happy. You can see that from his sparkling eyes and from that big smile in his face.
“I know you are, but I also know there’s something that worries you, right?”
He’s right.

“Yeah. Will you still have a bit of time for me every now and then?”
“How silly! Don’t be afraid, I’ll always be there for you. You know you are one of my fave friends!” he grins,
“Don’t you think Chris could be...”
“Jealous? Not at all” he says with an encouraging smile. He’s sure that when you’ll know her you’ll realise that she can’t be jealous.

Some days later Shane invites Chris to dinner at ‘The House’ so that he can introduce her to Olivia, George and the kids. Olivia and George are very glad to make her acquaintance, but you can’t say the same about the children! They aren’t happy at all as she’s a doctor and it is well-known that children don’t like doctors! She’s used to dealing with a lot of naughty kids every day, so she’s not worried about that because she can’t help adoring them.

Before going away she says she has something important to tell you. She says Shane told her you are scared of losing his friendship, so she reassures you saying it’ll never happen. She knows that your friendship is too important to Shane and she also knows his friendship means a lot to you. Shane told her something about your recent troubles, so she is aware that you find hard to trust someone now, so she expresses her wish to become your friend. She’s been in London for five weeks and as she doesn’t know anyone apart from her colleagues, she needs a friend. She wants you to be her friend.
