SUE'S RING by Enola

Susan was really happy. She was at work but she couldn't take her eyes off her left hand. The day before had been the happiest of her life. After making love, James had given her a little red velvet box. She had been with James for 6 months so she thought to know what that little box contained, and for that reason her hands were trembling when James had told her to open it. She had hesitated for a while before opening it. Her heart beat faster and faster. When she had finally opened it she saw a pretty white gold ring with a small diamond in it. Her eyes had immediately filled with tears, then she cried her eyes out because that was James's mum's ring. His dad had given it to his mum more than 30 years before, then his mum had given it to him with the promise he'd give it to the woman he'd love forever. It wasn't very precious, it was worth few pounds, but it had another value much more important. It was the symbol of a wonderful love story that death had broken off too soon, but nothing could have ever annihilated. James had taken the ring and had put it in her ring finger and had whispered "Sue I love you" then he had kissed her. Everyone called her Susan but James, he always called her Sue like everyone used to call his mum.

A week Later. Susan was about to get to work when she realized her ring wasn't in her finger anymore!!! She didn't know what to do…she felt her heart stopping…she decided to go back home because maybe she had left it somewhere, even though she was totally sure she hadn't ever taken it off. She phoned to her boss to tell him she'd be late. She looked for it everywhere but she didn't manage to find it…she could have lost it in the street or on the bus…she kept on searching…but she didn't manage to find it. She phoned again to her boss to tell him she wasn't fine at all so she'd stay at home…she dropped into the sofa and started to cry. How could she tell James she had lost his mum's ring? She knew he'd hate her for that. That night James went to her flat and he realized immediately she didn't have her ring…she told him she had taken it off to wash her hands, so James told her to go to take it because he wanted to see it always in her finger!! At that point Susan burst into tears, she couldn't keep on lying to him, he didn't deserve that. She told him she couldn't find it. James didn't manage to believe she had lost it. He got angry, or rather, he got furious. He was so bloody angry with her, she hadn't ever seen him angry and for that reason she was very frightened. He went away slamming the door leaving her in tears. She couldn't sleep and she cried a lot because she couldn't set her mind at rest. She knew that was over between her and James, he wouldn't ever forgive her.

The day after, before going to work, she turned the washing machine on, so during her break she'd go back home to hang out the washing. When she got home she put the washing in a basket and when she took the sheets to hang them out she heard the sound of something metallic which had fallen onto the floor. It was her ring!!! She picked it up at once and held it in her hand tight. She couldn't believe she had found it! She thought that she had lost it when she had changed the sheets and had put them into the washing machine! She went at James's immediately. When he opened the door he seemed quite calm and he invited her to enter. Susan refused because she had to rush to work. She put her hand in her bag and took out that little red velvet box and handed it to James telling him to open it. James opened it and his eyes shone when he saw the ring. Susan told him what it was happened and she added she had gone there to give it back to him because she couldn't keep it anymore. The fact she had lost it meant she wasn't worthy of it, he would find someone better than her soon, someone who deserved that ring more than her. Then she went away.

Susan was about to go to sleep when the doorbell rang. It was James. She was amazed to see him and let him enter and when he came in he went close to her and kissed her forehead. They both sat over the sofa and firstly James apologized to her for getting angry with her the day before. He put his hand in his coat pocket and took out the little red velvet box and opened it. He took the ring and put it in her finger, then he held tight her hand in his. He looked at her with his sweet dark brown eyes and whispered,
"This is its right place and I want it to stay here forever because…Sue I love you!"
