DON’T SPEAK by Greeboina She didn’t know for long she had been here. She hadn’t counted the hours after he had left. She sighed and turned around. It was a beautiful weather outside but she felt empty. She had let him go. She knew when she and him started this that she could never have him. She had let herself fall in love and now she had to pay the price. The memory of him opening the door to her flat and sending her that smile, made it hurt inside her. He had said he had something to tell her but then his smile had slowly died. She had looked at him. Then she told him. He had looked at her and his usual shining blue eyes turned into two dead pools. He looked at her and then turned around. She had cried when she heard the front door being closed but what could she do? He was married and she had to let him go. She cried her bitter and lonely tears. She was looking out of the window and absently making her tea. She didn’t feel like drinking tea but perhaps the normal activity could stop the hurt. It didn’t help that she could see him everywhere. In the kitchen, laughing at her as she was trying to save the food from burning, them making love on the sofa in the living room and the cuddles after making love. She shook the memories away. She had to get through this. She had to live on without him. She didn’t feel like drinking her tea and poured it out in the sink. She woke up when the harsh and unwelcome ringing interrupted her sleep. She took her phone and saw that it was James. She turned it off. She couldn’t face having to deal with him now. The wound was still raw and she wanted to lick her wounds. He was Nicky’s friend and knew about them. She couldn’t bare listening to James. He was her friend too and had warned her against it. She curled up on the sofa again. She wanted to sleep again and forget what had happened. She opened her eyes and realised that it was dark outside. She got up. She had to eat something. Funny how something never changed even when your life had fallen apart. She walked to the kitchen and took an apple. She sat down on one of the kitchen chairs and stared out in the air. She jumped when someone knocked on her door. She ignored it. She didn’t want anyone to be here right now. She dropped the able when she heard James’ voice. “I know you are there. Let me in.” She thought about pretending she wasn’t there but knew that he wouldn’t leave. She got up and went into the hall and opened the door. James walked in and turned around. He looked at her and opened his arms. She walked into them and tears fell down on his chest. He stroked her back soothingly and held her as she cried. When her tears had stopped falling he tipped her head up. He looked at her with a sad smile. “You are the second person today I’ve held…” When his words hit her she looked away but James wouldn’t let her. “Don’t.” She bit her lip and tried making her tears stop falling. “Someone is just as lost and hurt as you. I know I warned you but you don’t need to hear that.” He looked at her. “Did you ever let him tell you what he wanted to tell you?” She shook her head and looked away. “If you had let him speak out all this could have been something that would never exist…” She looked at him. “If you had let him speak he would have told you that he was a free man.” She tried pushing him away from her but he held her. “He wanted to tell you that Rachel had agreed to a divorce but instead he left with a broken heart.” She slid down on the floor. She was crying. James sat down and placed her on his lap. He let her cry. When only a few sobs came from her, he sighed and got both of them up. “If you could…would you let him speak first?” She nodded and looked down. “You got your chance now.” She looked up and saw him open the door. Nicky was standing at the door. Her heart jumped as she saw him. Without thinking she went straight to him and held him. She looked at him. His eyes were red and puffy after crying. “I’m sorry.” He hugged her and whispered: “It doesn’t matter.” He looked at her. “Not now.” They forgot everything around them. James smiled and closed the front door after him. His work was done and now the two lovebirds had to work out the rest themselves. <<< Greeboina's stories |
