HAVING A CONSCIENCE by Janey

Cerys jumped with shock as fingers covered her eyes and mouth.
“Shush,” whispered a soft voice.  “Don’t be afraid.”
“Umm! Hmm mmm umm,” she protested, shaking her head in the hope that the fingers holding her as a prisoner would be shaken away.

With warm breath on her neck, Cerys was tugged gently backwards and into a very large stationary store.  She heard the sound of the lock being engaged, then her eyes and mouth were free.
“The things I have to do to get time alone with you!”
“Nicky!” she panted.  “You frightened me, you great steaming clot!”
“Sorry honey but I’ve been going insane not being able to see you, as irrational as it is.”

“I couldn’t give a flying fuck!  This is way too much.”
He laughed as quietly as possible.  “I brought a ton of stuff that Martin, Terri and Philip need copying, so that will keep us occupied for a while.”
“Great until others want to come in!” she laughed.  “You know that the sound of a copying machine will not keep people away even if the door is locked.  In fact, it makes them more suspicious.”

“Ok so lets load this little baby up as much as we can while we find somewhere to play,” Nicky grinned.
“Like that is going to happen here!  Oh Nicky, come around when you’ve finished or when I have,” she smiled at his confusion.  “I’m not sure which one of us will finish first.”
“Knowing our meetings it will be you,” he smirked.  “My place or yours?”
“You have some nerve!” she smirked, backing against him.  “From nothing to this!  I should be so mad at you Wire!”

“So you guessed huh?”
“Oh I drove James, Sean and Terri crazy with my insistence that you liked me.  I began to think that I was going nuts.”
“I can be a very good actor when I need to be.”
“Erm, is that something that you really ought to be telling me?”
Nicky threw his head back as he laughed.  “I guess not!  Where will you meet me Cerys?”
“The shopping centre is open till late.  I’ll give you my mobile number and we can organise something when you leave here ok?”
Nicky was cock-a-hoop!

“I must be crazy.  Inviting you to my home for a meal when I hardly know you,” Cerys chuckled nervously, plating up their respective takeaways.
“Ah but you know Martin very well so if I misbehave you know that he will sort me out!”
“What do you construe as not behaving Nicky?”
“Anything that you don’t want.”
“I can live with that.”

“Ah well,” Cerys sighed.  “You’ve eaten, had a drink and company so I guess it’s time for you to go home.  You have a wife waiting for you.”
“Can’t you ignore that?”
“How?  I know how I’d feel if it was me that you wanted to cheat on.  I admit that it’s flattering and I love being with you, but we have to be careful Nicky.  People, namely your wife and child will get hurt.”
“Not necessarily,” Nicky whimpered, nipping at her ears with his lips.  “My job means that I have to be away a lot.”

“That doesn’t fill me with confidence.”
“What?”
“You giving that explanation so easily.  How many times have you had an affair?”
Nicky was incensed!  “Never.  I have never cheated on Rachel nor have I wanted to, till now.”
“Flattery won’t work.”
“Cerys, we have been flirting since time immemorial.  I have never hidden how I felt about you.”

“Nor have you wanted to act on it so tonight can be the same can’t it Nicky?”
“No it can’t because tonight I have finally summoned up the courage to approach you in this way.  I may never do this again Cerys, at least not without being inordinately drunk.”
She cupped his face in her hands.  “You have so much to lose Nicky.  How can you be sure?”
“Simple: you’ve always been on my mind.  For the last eight years or so since we got to know you, it has been there.  YOU have been there!  I have made love to my wife thinking of you.”

“THAT I didn’t need to know.”
“Sure you did.  You need to know that this isn’t a flash in the pan thing.  James knows the truth; he’s the one person I told.”
She stood open mouthed absolutely flabbergasted at his declaration.

“When did you tell him?”
“I have told him a few times since I first met you.  Like you he didn’t believe me at first.  Now he really does.”
“I’m sorry Nicky but I can’t do it.  No way can I go with a married man, no matter how attractive I find him.  I’m sorry.”
“Are you throwing an ultimatum at me Cerys?”
“No I’m not Nicky.  Quite simply I will work with you, be your friend even, but I will not sleep with you.  That’s all that there is to it really.”
“Well I’m going to go crazy then because I want you.  I want you a whole lot.”
“I think that it’s time for you to leave before this gets awkward,” Cerys sighed.  “I’ll see at the office in a few days Nick.”

Cerys cried as soon as Nicky stepped out of the door.  Sometimes having a conscience was a bitch.  She had turned down the man of her dreams because he was married.  Yes it was the right thing to do.  It just didn’t feel like it right now.

The end.
