CYborg's Awesome BUBF Dyno Run
Well, I went to a Hells Angels Rally today and they had a Dyna set up
there. I go to this rally every year, because they don't care what you
ride, and are nice people, and the band is always good. Some CMA people even
come. You just look at what you don't want to see. :)
Anyway, I kept looking at the Dyna and watching them do the
Harleys. Some of them didn't wind up at all, and some of ‘em missed
like a freight train! Sign said $25.00. It took me all day, but
finally I talked to one of the Dyna Guys and said can you do a Vulcan on there?
This gave him the opportunity to say anything and get out of doing it, in
case the Harley guys didn't like the idea. He said, “Sure, hell we have
done a BMW, and Kawasaki 11 something, that cranked out 129 HP.” Most
of the Modified Heritages were putting out in the 70's, and the sportsters
were putting out 40’s and 50's horsepower (883's and 1100's).
The Dyno guy said, “My buddy has a 98 Vulcan A, and we just did it the
other day.” He said he had noticed me riding up for pop (lazy) and
said it would do fine. So, I checked the oil, which was OK, and handed it
over.
Those DG's Drags made me proud! The Borgess sounded every bit as
good as the Harleys, and wound a lot farther (Rev limiter on 6000). They went
thru the gears and then nailed it for a spell, and then let it back down and
nailed it again for shorter spell.
It was a trip. Them guy is all looking at me, and I didn't know how
it did, but it didn't miss once, nor did it pop or backfire! hehe. She
ran like a clock and only threw a small amount of smoke out at the end of
the test. The Dyna guy said that the results were good, and that I was
a little fat on the top end, but otherwise perfect and not to mess with it
other than drop the main jets about 2 points, which would lean it out on the
top end.
They had run it up to almost 122 mph, and a Harley Sturgis Edition only
went up to 93mph. I had 60.6 Horsepower on run 1 and 59.4 Horsepower
on run 2. Their cutoff was 62.18. He said that the mods were good, and
she was in good shape. I was happy, and the Harley guys with BIG
MOD’s done looked amazed when the Dyno guy said to them that this one (my BUBF) was
basically stock, with no Piston Job, or changed Cams and such. (My words,
not his)
I don't think the Guy with the Sturgis Model (nice bike) was quite
as happy, as he beat me by less than 1HP. I don't know the makeup of his
bike, and he didn't seem to want to talk about it. He had tho't his was lean
on top, but they said it was a perfect setup and don't change anything.
I probably won't ever do it again, but it was worthwhile to see what the old
girl could crank out, since it is supposed to come able to do 52 Horsepower,
as I recall. 60.6 hp suits me just fine! I probably won't change the jets
since I have had the 140's in it, and it still fouls plugs, and doesn't run
quite as well.
If Manjo reads this, he can add it to the info on my bike. It might
be interesting to see how other BUBF’s have fared, (wg and Loren
notwithstanding, with their piston and Cam work) :)
Just some general info for the members! ~ BTW, It was a good
rally, Way to hot, but the Wienie bite was fun, and the Panty
race was good, but the sled drag DID. :) -- CYborg #3007
