five fathoms deep
five fathoms deep i made peace w/ the sharks.
i explored the wreckage of the war-sunk ship,
it’s dull metal hull eroding endlessly into the still water.
i frolicked with the dolphins through the coral reef.
i visited the tomb of bluebeard, five fathoms deep.
i lay on my back & watched the gentle swell above.
i explored w/ rapture the serene & endless forest;
the startled glow of luminescent squid showed the way.
i broke surface w/ the dolphins & watched the whales play
then throw themselves back under
to rip the seas asunder-
i watched for the glow of the watch-tower many miles away.
then i saw the rain clouds gather
& the horror of the thunder
while the ocean’s children crept away to sleep-
and i frantically sought shelter
as the waves tossed me helter-skelter-
now i lay at peace five fathoms deep.
