morning was when i sunned myself
beneath your sleeping smiles
i stepped out of bed into your slippers
+ left you, naked + craving a kiss
those august mornings brought smokey
sunrises
+ bitter eggs on cold plates
when you asked if i slept well i replied
that even dreams did not make sleep
worthwhile
i stepped outside on dewey grass
still aching from the weight of your arm
i wove pretends from smiles made flesh
but in the end was sunburnt
