Man by and large
considers himself to be healthy and tries to lead a happy life. But in
fact there are 326 diseases which haunt man day in and day out.
Excessive vaata, pittha and sleshma (wind, bile and phlegm) are
responsible for various diseases. vaata gives rise to 80 types of
diseases, pittha to 82 types and sleshma to 164 types. Such being the
case, how can man enjoy a healthy life? Only when he develops Atmic
Consciousness and distances himself from the adverse effects of vaata,
pittha and sleshma can he be healthy.
Man is always
concerned about his health. He has become a victim of various ailments
as he is steeped in body consciousness rather than Atmic principle. It
is very essential for man to realise that diseases underscore the need
for getting rid of body consciousness. You are all
aware of the fact that Swami fractured His hip and it was in three
pieces. The ball in the hip was in two pieces. The pain was so
excruciating that it cannot be described in words. It was impossible to
move this way or that way. It pierced the body as if it were an electric
shock. But, I was unaffected by it. I underwent all this suffering only
to demonstrate that one should not be attached to the body. Instead, one
should develop Divine consciousness. I am not this body. Body
consciousness leads to untold suffering. One has to get rid of body
attachment in order to enjoy peace and happiness. What is this body
composed of?
Dehabhimana
(body consciousness) will disappear once you develop Daivabhimana
(Divine Consciousness). The first step in spiritual path is to keep body
consciousness under check. You are subjected to misery as you are
immersed in body consciousness. Body consciousness and Atmic
consciousness are inversely proportional. Nobody can escape the
consequences of karma (action). Karma is the cause for birth and death.
The Bhagawad Gita declares: I was all smiles
when I was being taken to hospital. Many doctors surrounded Me at the
hospital. They were anxious. I told them not to worry. "This body
is not Mine. It is yours. You can do whatever you deem fit to this body.
I have no pain whatsoever", I assured them. I came back after three
hours. I was full of smiles. A true spiritual aspirant is one who
undergoes difficulties with a positive frame of mind. Do not care for
the suffering of the body. Suffering is quite natural to human body. One
has to face suffering with Atma Balam (will power). Embodiments
of Love! One has to take good care of one's health with
proper food and habits. There are many poor people in our country who
lack the basic necessities of food, raiment and shelter. Who will take
care of them when they are afflicted with diseases? Our hospitals are
doing yeoman service to suffering humanity. Do not think that I am
lavishing praises on our own hospitals. You can see it for yourself when
you visit these hospitals. If you go to our General Hospitals and Super-Speciality
hospitals, you will find a number of poor people being treated for
various ailments totally free of cost. Elsewhere, the Super-Speciality
hospitals are established with commercial motives. They collect fees
even to check the temperature of a patient. How can the poor afford such
costly treatment? Doctors should render free service to patients to the
extent possible. |

Saibaba gives discourses on 5-7-03 a report
Saturday morning, it is cool, a breeze softly wisps past in the morning
darkness. We are admitted to the ashram at 5.30 AM. Inside, I first noticed the
temporary shamina with tureens. Tables with decorations placed at the side of
the temporary canopy. Bunting is strung between any and every available
structure, large palm leaves are tied to poles, entrances. Looking inside the
darshan hall, I see the signs Love All-Serve All have been placed between the
portrait photographs of Saibaba along the back wall. The dias and fencing have
all been bedecked with garlands, and many garlands hang down behind the Krishna
Idol. The dot matrix screen on the front of the canopy spells out "Service
to
Humanity is Service to God". I note the many, many garlands on the
Saraswathi
idol, not far from where I sit. The blue arch has been placed at the end of the
darshan hall, it has a script in Kannada, Lokesam, Lokanatham, Sai Mahadavam,
bhaktavatsalam, are the words I recall from one Seva dal translated for me; he
translated Sai is all in all, and lord of all.
Hospital staff and staff of the Institute of Higher Medical Science file into
the ashram and sit in lines. There is a long wait. Hospital and IMS staff
enter and take their reserved seating. Tokens are not given out this morning,
we enter the darshan hall the order of the lines we were in. First in, First
Served. Inside, there are many many seva dals steering us to seats. Three high
backed red chairs are brought out, a lectern appears under the canopy, and the
table is brought out and placed in front of the chairs. Bunting flaps softly in
the early morning breeze.
I note that there are a lot of "Brass" around near the entrace to
Trayee
Brindavan, and I find out why very quickly. The music comes on at 7.50 and
OMKAR begins. Gananatha, Gananatha, a strong male voice leads us into the
bhajan. People appear on the stage behind the canopy. I note the seva dals
offer hands in pranams near the Trayee Brindavan arch. Then the Governor of
Karnataka, Shri Chaturvedi and the Chief Minister of Karnataka, C.M. Krishna
appear on stage and stand in front their chairs. They remain standing in front
of the chairs. Then I see Dr Padmanban and Satyajit emerge from behind curtain
behind the Krishna idol, and lo, Saibaba appears, walking towards the front.
Saibaba goes to walk between the chairs, and there not being enough room, Saibaba
moves Krishna's chair aside as he turns and slips past, and puts it back,
taking his place. Saibaba looks around, beaming and smiling. The Governor and
Chief Minister take their seats after Saibaba sits down.
Sarva Dharma Priya Deva commences. Saibaba places his elbow on the armrest, index
finger crooked, his arm moving up and down keeping time with the bhajan. Saibaba
looking over ladies, looking at the bhajan singers intently. Signals the lead
singer to finish with this bhajan.
The MC takes the lectern; disaster, no sound. Several attempts to get sound
from the Mikes. Finally a student comes forward and deftly turns the microphone
on. The MC calls upon IMS staff to welcome the Governor and Chief Minister
with floral bouquets. The Chief Guests were felicitated with momento's of the
occasion - IMS staff brought two plaques to Saibaba to present to the Chief
Guests.
It is not without significance that C.M. Krishna is here today. On the day of
Saibaba's accident, Saibaba was to go to Sri Krishna's house and visit. When Sri
Krishna heard of Saibaba's fall, he came straight to Whitefield and visited Saibaba
instead.
The MC then gave a speech on the significance of this occasion. Thereafter, he
requested the Governor and Chief Minister to felictate the doctors who
performed Saibaba's operation. One tall, suited, Dr Sundaresan, orthopaedic
surgeon, came forth and the Governor unfolded and placed a white shawl around
the Doctor's shoulders. Saibaba observes, smiling, and thunderous applause fills
the darshan hall. Dr Eknath, opthalmologist, was called forward, and as he
approached and Saibaba indicated to him to walk behind the chairs to reach the
Chief Minister, who was seated on Saibaba's right. C.M. Krishna then unfolded and
placed a shawl around the shoulders of Dr Eknath amid enthusiastic applause. Dr
Ekanth is honorary surgeon at the General Hospital. Both doctors have been
awarded a cash gift of 7 lakh rupees.
Red and white clad students take the podium and sing slokas and mantras. Strong
strident, clear, Hari OM echoes through the darshan hall. All bow to Saibaba and
take their leave, Saibaba granting abhayahasta to each pair of students.
Prashanthi Council Member, and former student of Whitefield College, C.
Srinivasan (known as Bangalore Srinivasan) then took the lectern and gave a
welcome to the Guests, and a strong appreciation of the work of the doctors and
the Institute of Higher Medical Sciences. He spoke with great vitality and
enthusiasm.
Watch Saibaba during the speeches. The bright flouro lights fall on Saibaba, making
his hair glisten with light, his face is a light brown under the bright lights,
his robe looks crisp. Saibaba is relaxed in the chair, looking around
occasionally, dabs his lips with a kerchief, takes a sip of water. From time to
time, Saibaba makes a lifting motion with his hand.
Dr A.N. Safaiya, Director of the Institute of Higher Medical Sciences then
spoke. He was so full of devotion, he spent nearly 3/4 of his inspiring speech
facing Bhagavan with his hands joined in pranams as he spoke. He faced Saibaba so
much, we could hardly hear him at times. Inspiring and strong speaker, Dr
Safaiya finished mentioning qualities necessary for doctors - principally, No
Ego. Saibaba leaning forward frequently, particularly toward the end of the
speech, facing Dr Safiya and fully attending the devotion seeping through Dr
Safaiya's words.
At 8.35AM, the MC takes the lectern and prays to Saibaba to give divine
discourse.
Saibaba stands and rests his hands on the table. Thrilling applause emerges from
the devotees thronging the darshan hall. It was a great thrill, the feeling of
here is our God, our Guru, once again fostering the devotees and giving divine
discourse. Students place the familiar double microphone in front of Saibaba, a
lectern appears on the right side and Sri Narasimhamurthy takes the lectern.
Saibaba spoke some words.
Then he sang, with a strong, clear, sweet voice filling the darshan hall.
On and on sang Saibaba, time ands space pause as I enter into that divine reality
that is created when Saibaba sings. Through the notes, I am observing his form as
he sings,
once again lifting us up, giving solace to the needy, kinship to the destitute,
grace and love to devotees everywhere. Narasimhmurthy translates. Saibaba leans
forward and gives discourse. Strong, clear voice. Saibaba told develop divine
consciousness, the body will not bother you. Saibaba's hand flies above his head
as he emphasises divine consciousness.
Saibaba speaks in English. I am not this body. he points to his body and points
up. Saibaba taps his hip and mentions the excruciating pain the body was in. He
felt no pain, he is divine consciousness. Disease and sickness come from the
mind in body consciousness.
Saibaba told of his fall, and waved in the direction of the hospital, speaking in
English. "Saibaba went to hospital". Saibaba told doctors, "This not
my body, this
is your body. Do as you wish to it." Saibaba speaks about health, body, mind,
strength. If you develop divine consciousness, day by day, you will not be
prone to illnesses. Saibaba spoke on the ills that mankind experiences, caused by
following body consciousness.
"Saibaba was walking again in three days". The discourse continued. Saibaba
told
that he felt no pain in recovery, and "your prayers to me are making me
very
happy". Saibaba pointed to his hair, Narasimhamurthy translated "No grey
hair"
and Saibaba turned to Narasimhamurthy, touching his hair and clarifying
translation. Much laughter.
Saibaba spoke of the dedication of doctors, there are many doctors who do not
care for the body, only caring for their patients, If all the doctors in the
world were like this, there would be no patients and all would be healed
quickly. Saibaba mentioned to doctors by name who were setting sterling example,
and called them forth.
They were lady doctors, Dr Savithri and Dr Shantha ascended the stage and were
felictated by Saibaba, receiving flowers and gifts of white shawls. Applause.
Narasimhamuthy left the podium and went around the back of the chairs, and
raced back when Saibaba continued to talk. Pause. Saibaba then turned to Sri
Krishna, who had partly arisen from his seat to assist Saibaba in felictating the
lady doctors. Saibaba made vibhuti for Sri Krishna, and walked across and also
distributed vibhuti to Sri Chaturvedi, the Governor of Karnataka.
All stood, and the function concluded with the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana.
My attention turns to Saibaba, standing between the Governor and Chief Minister,
he is swaying gently as the National Anthem was sung. Saibaba and the guests
departed via the central door, exiting behind the Krishna idol. Students came
out, distributing prasadum. It is 9.25AM.
Sai Ram from Whitefield.
There is darshan again tomorrow morning.

Dear Brothers and Sisters! SaiRam to All! Sai Ramesh Hall was decorated beautifully today. There was a festival atmosphere and I am sure most were wondering what the 'special function' was all about. I did. There was an arch at the beginning of the hall that had a writing in Kannada which read "Lokabandhur Lokanatho Sai Madhavo Bhakthavatsalaha", evidently taken from the Vishnu sahasram. By the time I reached at 8AM, Bhagawan had come and accompanying HIM were the chief minister and the Governor of the Karnataka state. All three were seated on the stage in chairs. The function began with Veda chanting by boys. That done, the principal Sri. Sanjay Sahani spoke for about 10 minutes. He mainly spoke about teacher and doctor profession being very noble as Love is very much necessary to discharge the duties in this profession beneficially. After that, Sri. C. Sreenivas, the chairman of the central trust for medicine and education spoke for about 15 minutes. He recalled the services of the selfless doctors and revealed how Bhagawan had told them that 'Doctors will one day line up here to perform surgeries voluntarily' and today it is the only hospital in the country that has a waiting list of voluntary doctors for performing surgeries! By now, the significance of the special function was clear! Sri. Sreenivas called up on the two doctors who were to be felicitated. The first to come was Dr. Sundaresan who had performed the surgery on Swamy's hip. The other was Dr. Hemanth Murthy, all of 39, he had done the maximum number of retina operations in the world! They were awarded with Rs. 7 Lakhs. Dr. Murthy performed the surgery on Swamy's left eye. Dr. Sundaresan was honoured by the governor and Dr. Murthy by the chief minister. Principal then requested Dr. Safaya Director of the Institute of Higher Medical Sciences to speak. Dr. Safaya spoke for about 15 minutes. He spoke about the Love of Bhagawan that has been the guiding light for them. When the hospital of Puttaparthy was inaugurated on 22nd November 1991, six operations were done on the first day itself! The operation thetre was fully made ready within three days! And then he quoted some numbers and said they have done 15,000 heart surgeries, 18,000 kidney operations, 22,000 eye operations and 6,000 operations related to nervous system. Both hospitals together perform about 50 heart surgeries a week. This cost runs in to 1 Crore a week! The combined budget for both hospitals is Rs. 100 crores a year! Now Bhagwan was prayed to give HIS message. HE rose to speak. Sri. Narasimha Murthy, Warden got ready to translate. I will briefly mention the points that Swamy talked about. HE started with the emphatic age old declaration: "If you look to ME, I look to you". Then started off with a Telugu verse that says 'In the sacred land of India, greatest virtue is patience and sweetest feeling is motherhood'. The verse goes on to lament that Indians are not able to know their own strength just like an elephant is not aware of its might. Swamy quickly came on to the point. <Swamy> "You have not been seeing ME for the last one month. The hip bone was broken. Even the ball was broken. THIS IS NOT SOMEONE'S ILLNESS THAT I TOOK UPON MYSELF, IT IS ONLY TO TEACH YOU TO RISE OVER ATTACHMENT TO THE BODY AND CULTIVATE ATTACHMENT TO THE SOUL THAT I SUFFERED. I was taken to the hospital for surgery. I went smiling all the way. Some doctors there were worried. I told them, do not worry. This is not my body, do whatever you want. I returned after three hours and I came back smiling. In three days I started walking. I could do all this because I do not have 'dehabhimana' (body attachment). I could get well quickly only because of the constant prayers of the devotees. Anywhere in the world, they were all praying. It is this love that healed it quickly. Your joy is my health and food. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is love, enjoy it. Life is a game play it. I have been playing with my body all along! Not only hip, let any bone break, I have no problem since I AM not attached to the body. Dr. Sundaresan looked after Swamy very well. I used to tell him, I have no pain, go. He kept on asking 'Swamy how are you, is there any pain' and so on. Not only me, he has also taken care of boys when they fall off motor cycles. He treats them very lovingly. In fact, if there are doctors like Sundaresan, there would be no disease at all in the world! Nine years ago something happened. When I took head bath, I had to dry my hair (at this point Swamy asked Warden sir what is that instrument called!). This electric dryer was presented by someone from the U.S. I switched it on, there was no power. I do not know about these modern techniques! I was looking at it closely when power came and the dryer hurt my left eye. Consequently I lost vision on that eye. The I thought it is enough if there is one eye to see everything and I gained courage. Does God need eyes to see? "Sahasra seersha purushaha, sahasraksha sahsrapaath". When the hip surgery was performed the other day, Hemanth Murthy said he will operate up on the eye and he set it right. Now I can see with both eyes. Whole world is based on health and education. You should encourage dedicated doctors. A true doctor should aspire for the welfare of the patient. Doctors in whitefield General hospital do lot of service. Dr. Savithri doesn't care even for her health. You should first take care of health and then help. Swamy is very very happy to see the service of the doctors. That happiness gives me health. The best way to love God is to serve God. " <\Swamy> Swamy mentioned the doctors who do lot of service in the Whitefield General Hospital. Dr. Savithri and HE asked who is the other one. Warden sir replied it was Dr. Shantha (??). Swamy called them both on to the dais. HE HIMSELF felicitated them. Then HE made vibhuthi for the CM and Governor. We were asked to rise for the national anthem. Swamy left along with other dignitaries after the national anthem through the door behind the stage. Prasadam was pulihora, kesri and a vada! It was soaked in SAI Mother's love completely. Very happy to hear the sweet voice of Swamy and sure we all need to do lot of soul searching. Swamy might be leaving soon for Parthi. We do not know if there would be darshan tomorrow morning. Hope we can see HIM once more at Brindavan before the eventful summer camp comes to a close. At HIS Lotus Feet Jai Sai Ram. posted by sivalalita manicka Sai Ram!
