Good morning everyone,

Here is an update of our activities regarding the Boys and Girls Club Internet program:

• Rosa has prepared a draft of the program documents. (They are really good!) I, Wanda and Rosa will review the documents and send them out to everyone.
• I met Evelyn (Club unit director) and we are all set to begin on Tuesday, Sept 3rd. Evelyn will go to the school and sign up kids. In the beginning, we will have ~15 kids. There will be at least one staff person who will work with us everyday. (First week may be bad as it will be the first week of school for all the kids.)
• Wanda has identified some DC paraphernalia in the Vartan office. We will reserve some items soon.
• I contacted the practitioners on the Community Service / Office Initiative committee, asking them how the volunteers can benefit more from the time they are putting in. They proposed that we can write an article in Analyst Quarterly about the program. So, is there anyone who wants to get their names in AQ as an article author? We will talk about this in our next meeting. I have attached the conversation with this mail.
• Below, I have put the updated schedule with more names.
• Evelyn decided that we will let the kids assign a name to the program. We will see how that goes.

Hello everyone,

We are all set for the first week. The first two sessions are September 3^rd and 5^th. Rosa has put together the module for this week. I will send it out to everyone soon. Our session starts 6pm. For everyone who can make it, let us try to get there around 5:45pm.

Directions to the club

Here is the address to the Boys and Girls Club at Steelton: 1 North Front St. Steelton, PA 1911.

Here are the directions to the club from Vartan office: It takes 20-25 minutes. There is parking on the street.

1. Take 81 South
2. Take the US-22 E/US-22 W exit- exit number 67B- towards PA-230 E/CAMERON ST/US-322 W/LEWISTOWN.
3. Keep LEFT at the fork in the ramp.
4. Stay straight to go onto US-22 E.
5. US-22 E becomes US-22 E/N CAMERON ST.
6. US-22 E/N CAMERON ST becomes N CAMERON ST/PA-230 E.
7. Follow South Cameron Street until it turns into Front Street in Steelton. You'll see a "Welcome Steelton", sign on your right hand side. Follow Front Street until you see a Turkey Hill Minute Market on you right hand side. One block down, across the street at the light is the Clubhouse.

Next Meeting

Lets meet on Wednesday, September 11^th 5pm - 5:30pm at Vartan. (I will book the room and communicate). I wish to discuss the following:

• We will do a round up of our experience of the first three days.

• We have first three modules assigned to Rosa, myself and Wanda. I wish to find volunteers for next three modules.

• How do you feel about this idea: As the person who makes the module for a week knows about it best, does it make sense if s/he conducts both sessions of that week? Also, what if that person keeps a diary about the events/ideas of the sessions to communicate to the next sessions?

Analyst Quarterly

The editor of Analyst Quarterly has asked us to write an article about our program. She says AQ is read widely and it can be a good way to increase awareness about the program and the volunteers who made it happen. Lets talk about it in our next meeting.

Status

Yesterday was the first day of our BGC Website program. When we reached there, we found that we did not have enough kids to start. We should have concentrated more on advertising the program at the school! So we decided to shift the program by 2 weeks and take the time to advertise at the local middle/high school. (It was interesting to see the enthusiasm of the kids who signed up on the spot! Some wanted to learn… some wanted to put it on resume…!)

Here is the plan

Tomorrow, I and Evelyn will go to the school and set up a meeting with a teacher (may be the computer teacher) at the school. (We will try to enroll him/her). I will take an advertising poster with me that we will put up at the school. If it works out, I will leave a sign-up sheet with the teacher (or attach it to the poster). I will then follow up next week (I guess Tuesday) to see where we are, and will take corresponding steps.

Materials

Meanwhile, we have an opportunity to prepare the materials for the program. Wanda and Frank offered to prepare the modules 3 and 4. I saw some interesting material on the web that offers advice on how to teach kids to make web pages – I will forward the links to you both. John offered to prepare the module number 5.

Our schedule is shifted by 2 weeks. Please see the dates and let me know if you wish to change them. Our 30 minute meeting at Vartan (5:00-5:30pm) on coming Wednesday still holds. We will meet in the kitchen (till I get a room). I will keep you all updated.
