Based on the Japanese comic, Jackie plays sexist/girl crazy private detective Ryu Saeba who is hired to find the daughter of a Japanese businessman. He tracks her to a luxury ocean liner that is targeted by a bunch of terrorists. Ryu/Jackie now has to save the girl and the entire ship from the terrorists.

Well, they did succeed in bringing the comic book to the screen and the entire movie has a goofy feel to it, but that's Wong Jing for ya. If you like silly humour(cartoony sound fx included) that borders on just plain stupid, then you'll love CITY HUNTER. We've all seen movies made based on comics/cartoons, but they usually don't translate well to live action. CITY HUNTER really feels like a cartoon which may or may not be a good thing depending on how you like your movies. The only scene I thought was funny was the Ken Lo/Carol Wan/Tan Lap Man scene. Carol Wan tries to seduce Ken Lo, but he turns out be gay, so he beats the hell out her. Meanwhile Tan Lap Man was sneaking up behind Ken, but Ken catches him and takes him to a room for some freaky action. Hahaha!

The action isn't up to par for a Jackie Chan film and is usually combined with some silly humour. The biggest fight is the final match up between Richard Norton and Jackie, but again it resorts to goofiness. The "famous" Street Fighter scene has Jackie getting zapped by a Street Fighter arcade machine and then everyone gets turned into characters from the game. Cheesy special effects and seeing Jackie dressed as Chun Li left me feeling queasy. Okay, the part where Jackie is swing Chingmy Yau around and shooting her guns at the same time was kinda cool, I give them that.

You so crazy!

Probably the most clever scene takes place in a theatre aboard the ship. Jackie is hiding inside and has to fight two tall black terrorists. Luckily for him GAME OF DEATH just happens to be playing and it's at the fight between Bruce Lee and Kareem Abdul Jabar! Watching the movie Jackie gets tips from watching Bruce's fight. After beating the two, Jackie looks at the screen and gets a nod of approval from Bruce. No way! One question, GAME OF DEATH is playing on the big screen and the theatre is empty? What's up with that anyway?

Overall, CITY HUNTER is a lackluster Jackie Chan effort. It only has a couple things going for it, and too much silliness to put up with, and I don't like putting up with things! But I did get the FOX DVD for cheap, so it wasn't too bad of a deal. Maybe I'll watch it again in a couple years.
