I watched this one awhile ago, so I may be a bit hazy on the details. Stephen Chow comes to Hong Kong from ??? to meet his friend. He loses his friend's address and after some initial shenanigans ends making friends with small time thug Kenny Bee. The two hear of a martial arts tournament that is offering a huge prize. Lucky for Stephen Chow he has a super strong right arm, but to enter the tournament you must belong to a martial arts school. They join Shing Fui On's school, but he's just a criminal using them. When Shing Fui On tries to ambush rival martial arts teacher Corey Yuen, it all goes wrong and Stephen Chow ends up saveing Corey Yuen. Yuen takes in Chow and Bee, and Chow falls for Yuen's daughter Cheung Man. Vincent Wan, a student of Yuen, is jealous of Chow and Man, so frames Chow for trying to rape Man. Corey Yuen kicks out the pair, but not before Chow runs into his friend who is robbing Yuen's house. Chow trains for the big tournament with the help of his friend's friends, if that makes sense. In the tournament Chow is matched against Yuen, who has learned the Chow was framed by Wan. Chow wins the fight and advances to the final against Wan. In the dressing room Wan kills Yuen and tells everyone Yuen died as a result of his fight with Yuen. Chow "gives up" and lets Wan pound the hell out of him, but eventually fights back and wins...surprise surprise. Happy ending all round, except for maybe Corey Yuen dying.
One question, "Why is only Stephen Chow's right arm super strong?" What would cause him to have only a strong right arm? Maybe some sort of repeated motion? Up and down rubbing motion maybe? Oh wait, I think I'm figuring it out. Unfortuately for Stephen Chow, a super strong right arm and all doesn't equate to a good film. I found most of the comedy falls flat and is just not funny. The movie parodys a John Woo style shoot out, but using spit instead of bullets. The movie has a CAT III rating due to the violent beating scenes. In two scenes Stephen Chow is beat to a bloody pulp, haha he's so funny! They use slo-mo scenes showing blood flying out of Stephen Chow(haha he's so funny) as he's beaten, and it's definitely gratitious and out of place in this comedy. Even though the action is co-choreographed by Corey Yuen, don't expect much in the way of fight scenes. The only big scene is the end tournament and is mostly Stephen Chow getting beaten to a bloody mess, haha he's so funny!
I was hoping for some more Bruceploitation seeing as how Stephen Chow is a big Bruce Lee fan and the movie is called FIST OF FURY 1991. The only Bruce-y scene involves some Japanese fighters and their sniveling Chinese translator coming to Yuen's to challenge him to a duel. Stephen Chow steps up and gives them the "we are not sick men" FOF-type speech, but only because he thinks they are filming a movie. Then a giant Japanese fighter proceeds to beat Chow very hard and he bleeds a bunch, haha he's so funny.
An early Stephen Chow film that doesn't come close to being as good as his later films. Not enough funny jokes, if any, and a big lack of Bruceploitation for a film called FIST OF FURY 1991 left me disappointed. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are a big Stephen Chow fan. Did I mention he gets beaten to bloody mess? Haha, he's so funny!
