Not to be confused with the ATV television series about Bruce Lee's life, this is a goofy comedy with general Bruceploitation overtones. Michael Chow, acting like a low rent Stephen Chow, stars as a young man who moves to Hong Kong to run a restaurant he has inherited. Sporting a pair of buckteeth and docile mindset, he soon finds himself on just about everyone's bad side ranging from local Triads to ruthless Japanese businessmen who want his shop. And, of course, he falls in love with a prostitute. Unable to defend himself, he gets lessons in Gung Fu from a mysterious lady (Cheng Pei Pei) who is obsessed with Bruce Lee.
Neither overly funny nor touching (which it desperately tries to be), this 1997 comedic oddity left me scratching my head. Is it Bruceploitation or Chowsploitation? Lead Michael Chow openly mimics Bruce Lee one minute and Stephen Chow the next. In fact, this is the source of the best joke of the film.
Villain: "You know what I hate more than anything?"Yes, that is the best joke! Sorry. Chow is a pretty agile comic actor and decent martial artist, but the material is sub par. There are a few funny gags towards the end of the film. One, where Chow imagines what he will do to the bad guys, is a great Bruce Lee send-up and the best moment of the film. Sadly, the rest of the film is not like that. Once again, your intrepid reviewer sits through another bad film so you don't have to. Don't forget me in your wills.
Chow: "People impersonating your hero Bruce Lee?"
Villain: "No, people trying to impersonate my hero, Stephen Chow!"
