Coming from the lighter side of Bruceploitation comes this crazy parody starring Johnny Yune as an immigrant Chinese cook who, after a accidental display of kung fu prowess, unwittingly becomes a cocaine smuggler for the mob. Assigned to deliver his special "Chinese flour" to various mob connections across the US, he soon finds himself on the run from various enemies, all the while trying to locate the beautiful woman his grandfather told him is in New York.

A personal favorite when I was a kid, I wondered if this one could stand the test of time. After all, I had matured so much in the years since I saw it, right? Well, guess what? It still cracks me up. Guess that says a lot about my development. Yune is hilarious as the inept Bruce Lee look-a-like. In between all of his one liners and non sequiturs, the film manages to parody classics such as ROCKY, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, KUNG FU, the JAMES BOND series, THE GODFATHER, TAXI DRIVER and even a Schlitz Malt liquor commercial. It was made during the carefree period when people still felt it was funny to make fun of cocaine abuse. Here is a great bit of dialogue after two prisoners get high on cocaine:

Convict #1: "Hey, you still got that M&M?"
Convict #2: "Yeah."
Convict #1: "Well, lets peel it and eat it. Then lets jog to Europe."
Convict #2: "Okay."
There is so much priceless dialogue along the lines of that in this film, with most of it belonging to Yune. Who can forget his classic delivery of his fight line, "With my right foot, I can knock off your face. With my left, I can kick your nose. With this (raises right hand), I can poke your eyes out. With this (raises left hand), I can break your neck. Take a good look at my face. I'm an oriental." Or the scene when he gets himself out of a bind with some thugs by using his handy Jive talkin' book written by Yo Mama. Don't expect high art here folks. This is a fast and furious gag flick along the lines of the greats like THE NAKED GUN, TOP SECRET and AIRPLANE!

Believe it or not, THEY CALL ME BRUCE? was somewhat of a surprising box office success when released in November 1982. It hung around the lower half of the box office top ten for over two months (unheard of in today's "do or die" opening weekend cinema races). One week it was ranked right next to E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL. Then again, E.T. had been out since June. Still it was popular enough to warrant a sequel called THEY STILL CALL ME BRUCE, which Keith reviewed here.
