I've enjoyed so many great book over the years that I find it impossible to
come up with anything like a top ten list. Instead I will list some memorable ones (in no particular order) along with an annotated list of
recently enjoyed books.
Memorable Books
Recently Enjoyed Books
- Code
by Charles Petzold - The best description I've ever read about how computers
work This book builds small
concepts in each chapter leading to a reasonably deep insight into the
operation of the hardware and software that enables modern computers to do
the amazing things they do.
- Into
Thin Air by John Krakauer - Thriller about an infamous ascent of
Everest gone awry. This one is a real "cliff-hanger" :).
- Our
Guys by Bernard Lefkowitz - Impressively researched and detailed
sociological study of the Glen Ridge rape case and the permissive high
school football culture in suburban New Jersey that led to this incident.
- Angela's
Ashes: A Memoir by Frank McCourt - Touching and uplifting
autobiographical sketch of a difficult childhood in Ireland.
- My
Own Country by Abraham Verghese - An Indian doctor's account of the
arrival of AIDS in the rural communities of eastern Tennesee.
- The
Tennis Partner by Abraham Verghese - Further adventures of Dr.
Verghese...this book focuses on his friendship with a promising young Doctor
with a dark secret.
- All
Too Human: A Political Education by George Stephanopolous -
Riveting chronicle of Bill Clinton's election and first four years in
office, told with wit and insight by one of Clinton's top advisors.
- The
Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith - A beautifully crafted
novel, I couldn't wait to turn each page to find out what happens next to
Tom Ripley. I won't spoil the story by describing the nature of Mr.
Ripley's talents.
- Isaac's
Storm by Eric Larsen - A bit slow moving at times, this book
provides a well researched account of the devastating Galveston hurricane of
1900, the worst natural disaster in U.S. history.
