CIGNA EXTRA
TOSCA- in 1932 at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Cigna violently threw herself off the top of the 'Castel Saint Angelo' only to find that there was no mat for her to land on. She took her roaring applause with blood visably dripping from her head.
CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA-
1936-1938 at the Met Cigna's partner for Cavalleria was Frederick Jagel. He said that during the performances he had to keep his feet firmly planted on the ground for Cigna in all her passion kept pulling and shoving at him so much so that he found himself being knocked off his feet. When the staging called for the two to tussle resulting in Cigna being thrown to the ground, Jagel was always afraid that he would be the one knocked down.
OTELLO- at the Met Cigna replaced Elizabeth Retheberg in a concert of Otello with Martinelli, singing her one and only Desdemona. Unfortunately, she hardly knew the part and kept the score opened at her feet during the performance. Everything went well for the first three acts. However, after a moving Ave Maria in the fourth, Cigna blanked and lost her focus. Martinelli told her not to worry, that he would fix it. So he killed her there and then long before the score called for her death. The concert was an incredible success.
