General description:
There are only four motorways:The A1 is the main route from Sofija to Plovdiv, and further to the Turkish border near Edirne (a section of about 60 km is still missing). The A2 will run from Sofija to Varna, but only the sections near Sofija and Varna have been completed so far. The A4 is a short section near Burgas (in the direction of Sofija) and the A5 is a short section south of Varna (to Burgas).
1-digit numbers are for main national roads. 2, 4, 6 and 8 are east-west routes (with numbering increasing to the south) and 1, 5, 7 and 9 are north-south routes (with numbering increasing to the east). Route 1 is the E79 from Vidin near the Romanian border via Sofija to the Greek border and 9 is the main coast road (E87) linking Romania to Turkey via Varna and Burgas. 3 is an east-west route linking Botevgrad (on route 1) to Bjala (route 5), but it has an odd E number E83 and can be seen as part of a north-south connection Sofija-Bucharest.
Numbers are derived by adding digits at the end, with intermediate zeroes if a number is derived from a number with more than one digit less. Examples:
2>27
2>208
9>9004
73>731
73>7301
208>2082

Almost all numbers with two or more digits are derived this way in the sense that they begin at the road they are derived from.

Road signs: no information available
History: The road numbering system was changed in the early 1980's, probably when the E numbers were also changed. Some examples of changes:
