General description: | ||||||
In reality, the island of Cyprus consists of two countries: the Greek state Kypros and the Turkish state Kibris. However, Kibris is recognized only by Turkey. According to all other countries, the country is officially all part of Kypros and the northern part is illegally occupied by Turkey. Kibris does not have road numbering. The system described here only applies to Kypros.
Motorways have 1-digit numbers. The A1 linking Lefkosia (Nicosia) and Lemesos (Limassol) is the oldest and longest. The A2 branches off the A1 from Nicosia to Larnaka (Larnaca).
The A3 is part of a planned half ring road around Larnaca, only the section between the A2 and the B3 has been built sofar. The A5 runs along the B5 between Larnaca and the A1 (part of the route between Limassol and Larnaca).
The A6 is from Limassol to the west. It is planned all the way to Paphos. The A9 is a small section west of nicosia.
Exit numbers are unique throughout the country. Number ranges are not ordered according to road number:
Road | Exits (assigned number range: not all exist)
A1 | 1-29 | |||||
A2 | 30-39 | |||||
A3 | 50-59 | |||||
A5 | 40-49 | |||||
A6 | 70-79 | |||||
A9 | None | |||||
B roads 1-9 are the most important main roads. The B1, B2, B5 and B6 are parallel to the corresponding motorways A1 etc., the B3 is from Larnaca to Paralimni and the B4 from Larnaca to Kiti. The B7 links Paphos and Polis (in the northwest), the B8 Limassol-Troodos and B9 Troodos-Nicosia are an alternative to the A1. Higher B numbers are short link roads: the B10, B13, B16 and B17 all end just outside Nicosia at the border with the Turkish state, the B20 is a short road in Paphos and the B22 links the A1 and A9.
E and F roads have a common zone system, with Ex[0-9][0-9] and Fx[0-9][0-9] near the Bx. There is one 4-digit E number: the E1003 in Nicosia, linked to the B10. This leads to the following hypothesis:
The northern part under Turkish occupation does not have road numbering. If this part would ever become part of the Republic of Cyprus again, the main roads would probably get numbers B10-19 (thus the rule that 1-digit B numbers are more important than higher numbers would no longer hold), and parallel motorways would get the corresponding A numbers. E and F roads would get numbers between 1000 and 2000 with the first two digits derived from B roads (the E1003 exists).
Road signs: blue, in Greek and Roman alphabet
History: The system was probably introduced after the split into Kypros and Kibris (otherwise there would probably be some 1-digit numbers missing).
Recently, the F class was added and the set of E numbers was extended. The E117 was upgraded to B22.
