General description:
Motorways and motor traffic roads: Only a few motorways are open at present but many motor traffic roads are planned. The following numbers are known. Numbers correspond to existing national roads unless they end in 0.

National roads: Routes 1-8 are the main arterial roads from Budapest (8 branches off 7). Numbers x[0-9]* (zone x) are between x and x+1, 8[0-9]* between 1 and 8. Derivation by adding digits at the end. Route 1 is from Budapest to the west (along the M1). Higher numbers are derived by adding digits at the end, from a 1-d number to a 2-d number, or from a 2-d number to a 3-, 4- or 5-d number.
4- and 5-digit numbers are not signposted.

History:
When a new road was opened (motorway or other), the old road's number used to be multiplied by 10 (as on the picture above, taken in 1987). In this way, the motorways and other roads formed an integrated system. However, around 1998 all these numbers were divided by 10 again so that the 1-digit main roads now continue all the way.
M numbers used to be only for motorways, but since the late 1990's they are also used for expressways.
Renumbering in the 1960's
In the late 1960's, many numbers were changed. Almost all 3-digit numbers were replaced either by 2- or 4-digit numbers:
