General description:
The M-1 is the main north-south route linking Yugoslavia and Greece. It is to be completed as a motorway by 2003. The other M roads are main long-distance roads, some have motorway sections. The M-5 krak is the road from Bitola to the Greek border. Zones for 3-digit numbers are determined by the first digit of all numbers. Zones are quite strict but strangely shaped. Zone 1 is mainly along the M-1 but there is also a part near Prilep. Zone 3 is very small and only contains roads 301 and 302. Zone 5 has a part in the east but the rest is near Bitola and Prilep.

History: Until independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, the Yugoslav road numbering system was in use.
Almost ten years later, almost all maps still show this system which suggests that many signs still have the old road numbering system.
Initially, there were strange road numbers with syntax 21-[1-6] which seemed to form an integrated system with the M roads (with 21-x corresponding to M-x) but these do not appear on maps anymore.
