General description:
State highway 1 is the main north-south route in both main islands. Other main roads are 2, 3, 4 and 5 in the North Island and 6, 7 and 8 in the South Island. The only known number with suffix B is 8B.
Zones for 2-d numbers are defined by the first digit of each number. Zone numbers increase in southbound direction with zones 1-5 in the North Island and 6-9 in the South Island. 1-d numbers usually run through the zone with the same number but note that there is no route 9.
Urban roads are known only in Auckland, with numbers 3-28 (duplication with nearby state highway numbers are avoided), in Hamilton, with 1-digit numbers, and New Plymouth. They can have brown shields instead of white for tourist routes.
