General description: It is remarkable that there are so many different classes of roads. The total lengths of road classes are as follows (1-7-1998):

Motorways A1 and A2 form a cross of two main through routes (A1 from southwest to northeast and A2 from nortwest to southeast). The A3 and A5 are less important.
Fast traffic roads complement the motorway network.
All other roads have unique numbers throughout the country, without overlap between classes. They are numbered sequentially per (sub)class.
Main roads are numbered 1-12 (first class) and 101-111 (second class).

History: In the 1990's, the old Yugoslav system was replaced by the current road numbering system. The old system still occurs on many major road maps.
