General description: QL1 is the main road from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and further to the northeast. It is also known as QL1A. Other 1-digit numbers are main roads from Hanoi. There are two spider-webs around these two main cities. Road numbers usually match at the borders with Laos and Cambodia, and are apparently based on an old colonial system for Indochina.
Road signs: Blue with white text. Road numbers are rarely indicated on signs, in plain text. They also appear on kilometer markers in white on red.
History: There used to be two separate systems in North and South Vietnam, with duplications. Later the numbers in the south were changed to remove these.
