Climbing history

This is a chronological record (starting with
the most recent) of every thing I remember doing that involves wearing hiking
boots.

river and up in 2 days with backcountry camping

California.

Mt. Kinabalu (4100
m) in Borneo/Malaysia during Christmas. Reached the
summit after a 2-day climb on
12/26/01 at 6:45AM. Did it with my friend Isa and Lianti (the Kandazan guide)
under raining conditions on the summit day.
- September 2001. Climb of Half Dome (8800
ft) and short hikes in Yosemite National Park. Did it in about 11 hours with
a group of about 15 people, most of which were doing Half Dome for
the first time.
- August 2001. Camping and short hikes in
Yosemite National Park. Not a very good trip (the park was crowded the trip
was poorly planned).
- July 2001. Short hikes in Yosemite National
Park. Took a couple of Brazilian friends to Yosemite over the 4th of July
holiday and did short hikes.
- April 2001. Took a 3-hour "guided wall"
while visiting the Kruger Park in South Africa. Saw several animals and
learned a lot about the park and fauna/flora.
- March 2001. Spent a day hiking/biking
around Moosining, a small town in Bavaria, Germany. I was there as part
of a business trip.
- September 2000. Camping and short hikes
in Yosemite, California. Short camping trip during Labor Day. We got a lot
of rain and our tents flooded during the night.
- June 2000. Hike in Pulau Ubin, Singapore.
Afte a week in Singapore, spent a day hiking in the only non-urban area
of Singapore. Pulau Ubin is an island close to the airport reachable by
bumboat from Changi Point. It still has some original rainforest and rubber
trees. I was there as part of a business trip.
- March 2000. Hike around Schwangau/Fussen,
Bavarian Alps, Germany. Spend a day hiking alone around the town of Fussen
and the Neuschwanstein Castle. I heard this area is packed with tourists
during summer, but this was a wonderful and peaceful winter day.
- September 1999. Hike on the Swiss Alps.
I was backpacking through Europe and stopped at Interlaken. I was surprised
to be able to take a train to 13000ft+. While not prepared for hiking, I
walked for several hours down the mountain visiting the small villages instead
of taking the train.
- September 1999. Climb of Half Dome (8800
ft) and short hikes in Yosemite National Park. Did it in about 10 hours with
a group of about 10 people, most of which were doing Half Dome for
the first time.
- May 1999. Short hikes in Yosemite National
Park, California. Did several short hikes with a group of friends from work.
Nadia (photo above) sacrificed her 5th birthday party for this trip and
did not regret it. We celebrated it by the Merced river.
- October 1998. Short hikes in Yosemite
National Park, California. Camped at White Wolf and did several short hikes
over a weekend with a group of friends.
- September 1998. Climb of Mt. Shasta
(14218 ft), CA. Summited it for the second time with my friends Sandeep (who
leaded), Isa and Carlos. It was my third Shasta expedition and my second
climb of the Avalanche Gulch route. This was the first Shasta summit
for Carlos and Isa.
- December 1997. John Muir Trail, Yosemite,
CA. My marriage was ending and I took a solitary trip to Yosemite between
Christmas and New Year. Hiked the snow-covered John Muir trail to top of
Vernal (had lunch with the semi-frozen falls only for me) and them to top
of Nevada.
- November 1996. Short hikes on Mt.
Diablo and Napa/Calistoga area.
- September 1996. Hike in Waimea Canyon
(5 hours) and hike of the initial section of the Na Pali Coast trail (6 hours),
Kawai, Hawaii. Beautiful views of the canyon, the coast and waterfalls. The
Na Pali gets very difficult and is 13-mile trail along the coast.
- September 1995. Climb of Half Dome
(8800 ft) and short hikes in Yosemite National Park. There were about 25
of us in the park, but I climbed it mostly independently in about 12 hours.
- October 1994. Climb of Mt. Shasta
(14218 ft), CA. We followed the Brewer's Creek/Hotlum route on the more difficult
North face and did not summit. Both Bernard and Keyhoe had AMS at our second
camp (11000ft). It was my first time seeing and playing around glaciers
and crevasses.
- September 1994. Climb of Mt Dana
(13,100 ft), Yosemite, CA. This was a relatively easy climb (we started
from Tioga Pass at 10000ft+) done in about 3 hours. Did it with Chris Wee
and Kevin. We got some snow at the summit and rain on the way down.
- September 1994. Climb of Mt. Shasta
(14218 ft), CA. We followed the Avalanche Gulch and summited with Chris, Michelle
and Mario on 09/05/94 at about 1:30PM (Mark and Jessica had AMS and had to
stop before reaching the summit). Weather conditions were good. I did not
find anyone from Brazil in the log book, so I claim to be the first Brazilian
to have done it.
- August 1994. Climb of Upper Yosemite
Falls Trail, California and other short hikes in Yosemite National Park.
Yosemite Falls are dry in August and we did the moderate-strenous hike on
a hot day.
- November 1993. We called it the "winter
expedition to Mt. Dana". Bernard, Sandeep, Chris Wee, Yang, Isa and I spent
Thanksgiving weekend hiking and camping in Yosemite. It was my first winter
camping experience. We started from the valley floor and headed toward the
Tanaya Lake up to about 11000 feet.
- April 1990. Hike on Ilha Grande-RJ,
Brazil. With a group of friends, hiked along the coast of Ilha Grande in
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for a couple of hours.

Baú in Campos do Jordão-SP, Brazil. Pedra do Baú is

points in the state of São Paulo. We hiked for a few hours and then
climbed the boulder with the help of ladders and ropes.
- May 1991. Hike in Paranapiacaba-SP.
São Paulo city is located in a plateau at about 800m asl. We hiked
from Paranapiacaba down and back, visiting a few natural and historic sites
along the way.
- October 1989. Hike on Serra do Japi,
Jundiaí-SP, Brazil. With a group of 10 people from work, I hiked
for about 8 hours along the creeks that run down Serra do Japi in several
water falls.
