Staring
(a poetic daydream by Cella)
Standing by the window in the dark
staring at the city lights below.
A bare bedroom,
sheets strewn, not even tucked in.
Clothes all over the floor.
The weary puppy lies in the midst of the tangled sheets.
He loves Raleigh
and he loves "Raleigh."
He knows they will always love him.
But here is so vast -- so cold sometimes.
Almost too much to bear if you let loneliness creep in.
Each flicker he sees --
A cd being played?
A thought of him?
He ponders the gift he's been given --
that's led him to staring out this window.
He picks up the limp furry figure,
making a tiny whine as he flops on his arm.
"It's just the two of us," he says.
"I'm glad you're here."
He once again stares out the window,
comforted by the little heartbeat he holds.
For one fleeting moment,
he smiles and allows himself to believe --
"King of the World...Master of All He Surveys."
