THE VISIT

(sequel to The Upgrade)

(a fiction by Cella)

More than two months had passed, but he hadn't forgotten her and all she did for him. He still felt her hand on his chest, praying nonstop for the medicine to keep working. He knew that God had heard her, and he knew it was God who kept him breathing far longer than that Epi-Pen should've worked.

The press had been all over the story. Every network called his publicist, begging for the exclusive on the minute-by-minute account and he respectfully declined them all. “You'd think I was a big star or something,” was always the cutesy line he offered up to the entertainment shows, followed by a serious thank you to everyone who helped him. The National Tattler managed to bribe a few people onboard to talk about the very little they knew, and of course, it was padded up into a two-page story and a picture on the front page. Those immediately around him at that time, though, were respectful and kept the matter quiet.

Jerome gave him the slip of paper she wrote her information on, but the phone number had a Columbus area code and wasn't working anymore. Maybe in all the craziness that night, she accidentally wrote down her old number. But he had her address. He could have sent flowers or a card, but he felt compelled to do something much more. Now that he finally had some real time off, he could.

As he loaded the last of his bags into the back of his silver Volvo XC90 SUV, he noticed his Border Terrier was watching him. He patted the carpet and snapped his fingers.

Come on up, Raleigh girl, we're going for a ride.”

At 4:00 a.m., he made his escape.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

She saw so many reports on tv, so grateful he was okay. The Chunky Peanut Butter Swirl ice cream he ate was a new flavor, and the peanut butter ribbon was processed just after an almond-and-pecan ribbon. Unfortunately, the small Illinois Gourmet Ice Cream Company had neglected to print an allergy warning on the carton, and two other reactions were reported within a week of Clay's ordeal. The company quickly recalled the flavor, posted an Allergy Alert with the FDA and created new labeling. They also paid for all his medical expenses, but the stigma amongst the fans about “the company that nearly killed Clay” compelled him to issue a statement on his fan club website, saying that the company acted quickly on all fronts and that he forgave them for their oversight.

Not one story even alluded to a woman seatmate helping him. Good, she thought – she managed to make her getaway. God bless those other people who are keeping quiet. I need the press showing up at my door like I need a hole in the head.

At the same time, she thought maybe he'd call or send a note, just to connect again. She had given her address and phone number to Jerome, but then again, she really was just a stranger and his life was so busy – he hardly had time to sleep, much less make contact, she knew that. Hearing his thank yous on tv was thanks enough, really. There were lots of people involved in making him well, why would I be more special than any of them to get more than just a general thank you?

Still...

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Are you crazy, C?” Jerome said on the other side of Clay's cellphone as he drove up Interstate 5 through San Luis Obispo.

Well, I've lived in L.A. almost five years now – maybe the nutfarm is rubbing off on me.”

You're driving all by yourself to Idaho?”

Well, of course I have Raleigh to keep me company, but I've got the GPS programmed, a dozen Krispy Kremes, a cooler and a full tank of gas. I don't think the press is going to follow me THIS far out of the city.”

You'd better hope not. I can still meet up with you and go along.”

Thanks buddy, but I'm flying solo on this. The only reason why I'm telling you is so that SOMEONE knows how to reach me while I'm gone, in case of an emergency. You and Mom are the only calls I'll take.”

I appreciate your confidence. What do you want me to say if people start wondering where you are? What if they find out you're in Idaho?”

Well, just be vague and say I'm on vacation with friends and can't be reached for a few days. If they find out I'm in Idaho, just say you think I'm looking for real estate there. The press love hearing news like that. But, use it as a last resort -- if you have to use that, I want you to call me immediately so I can get outta Dodge before they train their lenses on me.”

You got it. When will you be back?”

Well, you know I've got to be back before the 14th, so depending how things go, I may be gone as much as a week with travel time. I promise I'll call you as soon as I'm back.”

Okay, C – I think you've lost your mind, but good luck. I can't believe you're doing all this to see her.”

Yeah, well, neither am I – but something about it just feels right.”

Feels right? Feels like she's the one, dude?”

He thought about Jerome's question. “I don't know if I'd go so far as to say that, J – it's just – I just need to see her again.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

He drove through the vast San Joaquin Valley up through Stockton, then Sacramento – he was on the road for nine hours and he still wasn't out of California. “I had no idea a state could be so big, little girl,” he said as he gave Raleigh a rub on her back. “The scenery sure has been pretty, though.” An hour later, his heart raced with excitement when he finally came upon the first of three state lines: NOW ENTERING NEVADA.

He filled the tank at a gas station twenty miles past Reno, then parked nearby for a stretch, a couple more donuts and juice, and a sniff around for Raleigh. Exhilaration suddenly washed over him as he stood out in the middle of the desert. “Lord sweetie, nobody – absolutely NOBODY knows we're here! No obligations, no nothing – just us on a road trip. I didn't think it was possible to feel this way anymore.” He got back in the car, rolled down all the windows, tuned in the Heavy Metal channel on his satellite radio and took off down the highway, more excited than ever to see her.

NOW ENTERING OREGON – NOW ENTERING IDAHO – the last four hours flew by. By now, his body ran on nothing but sugar and adrenaline. He again imagined what her place looked like, and hoped it was as idyllic as she made it sound on the plane. He also hoped she wouldn't be too mad at him for just showing up – maybe he'll even get a smile.

Around 7:15, the summer sun just started to hang lower in the sky when he pulled to the side of the small asphalt road in front of a large farmhouse, and once again looked at the slip of paper:

Evelyn Whitcomb

142 ½ County Road 31

Grey Township, ID

He looked at the old metal mailbox with 142 on it, followed by a much larger, modern all-weather mailbox with 142 ½ on its side. “Looks like we're here.” He made a right and parked the car about 20 feet off the road in the gravel driveway. He sat there a moment and remembered how she described the property – the yard, the ponds, the trees, the big house – he took it all in.

She doesn't lie, girl. We're about as Mayberry as we can get here, and I know from Mayberry.” Then he noticed that about 100 feet past the house, the driveway forked to the left, and there sat a small house with a large tree in front. Just as he reached for the key to turn the engine back on, he heard a dog bark, then Raleigh barked furiously.

Tookie hush!” he heard from the porch at the same time he sw an enormous chocolate lab run toward the car, barking up a storm.

She didn't say anything about a horse!” he joked. “Maybe I'd better stay in the car.”

Mark waved his hand hello as he crossed in front of Clay's windshield. He lowered the window and put out his hand to shake.

Hi, you must be Mark.”

Yes, I'm Mark. Do I know you? You look familiar.”

Well maybe, I'm Clay Aiken? I'm here to see Evelyn Whitcomb.”

Oh yeah, the singer,” he smiled. “Well hi – this is a surprise. Didn't know Evie knew anyone famous. Come on outta there and we'll see if we can find her for 'ya. Don't mind Tookie, she's all bark.”

Well, I've got my dog with me. Maybe that's why Tookie is so excited.”

Maybe so, but she's harmless. Your dog'll be fine, bring 'er on out.”

THAT is a girl dog?”

Yeah, well she does look a lot like her dad, but she's my big girl. I'm surrounded by women in this house.”

He chuckled then reached for the leash and for Raleigh. “Come here, sweetie, here's a new friend for you to meet.”

By now, Edina was on the porch wondering who the stranger with the nice car in her driveway was, until Clay got out and talked with Mark and introduced Raleigh to Tookie. Her eyes went wide with disbelief. Oh God, it's him. How did I know...? Evie is gonna DIE. She stared as Mark and Clay talked with each other as they walked toward the house.

Wow, it's you!” Edina said as they approached the porch. Clay giggled as he walked up the steps and he put out his hand. “It better be me! Hi, I'm Clay Aiken – how are you, Edina.”

You know my name?”

Yeah, Evelyn told me about you and Mark and where she lived.”

Wow, you remembered our names.” Edina leaned close to Clay's ear.

This was on the plane, right?” she whispered.

You know about the plane?” he whispered back.

Edina started remembering the night about a week after Evie got back from L.A., where the whole story just poured out of her, how she didn't even tell her sister what had happened, and how much Evie cried when she talked about leaving the hospital.

She made me swear twice on a stack of bibles that I'd never repeat it to anyone.”

Oh, I see. That's fine. You're a good friend.”

Edina straightened and spoke back up. “So does Evie know you're here? She didn't mention anything about a visitor.”

No actually, I haven't spoken with her for a couple months. I think she gave me her old number by mistake, so this is sort of a surprise.”

Oh, I'm sure it will be. Well, come on inside for a little bit. Evie's around somewhere. Would you like something to drink?”

Actually, just a glass of water would be great. Is it all right if Raleigh comes in, too?”

Oh, sure,” Edina said as Clay picked up his little companion. She gave her ears a pet and the little dog's tail wagged. “My, aren't you a cutie. You look like some sort of terrier.”

Yes, she's a Border Terrier. They're supposed to be good at fleshing out badgers, but she's a great traveling dog.”

I bet you're also thirsty. I'll get you a bowl of water, too.”

Well, that's very kind of you, Edina, thank you very much.”

Oh, de nada.

As they made their way though the enormous living room back toward the kitchen, Clay heard the happy squeals of children upstairs. Edina stopped at the base of the stairs and yelled up. “Girls, come down here please, we have a visitor.” A minute later down run two little girls, followed closely by the grandparents. Everyone managed their way into the spacious kitchen and sat around the dining table. Edina gave Clay a glass of icewater and a bowl, which he set down as his feet for Raleigh, who immediately lapped at the water.

Gee, we spend most of our lives living in L.A., and we had to come out HERE to see a celebrity,” Mark joked as Clay quickly downed most of his cold drink.

Edina took both girls under her arms. “Josie and Jamie, this is Mr. Aiken. He's visiting Auntie Evie. Can you say hello to him?”

Hello, Mr. Aiken,” the two girls cooed.

Immediately Clay turned into Mr. Aiken, the teacher never far away. “Hi, Josie and Jamie, how are you today.”

We're fine,” they say simultaneously.

What were you playing upstairs? It sounded like you were having fun.”

We were playing Horsey with Grandpa, weren't we girls,” Edina's mother interrupted.

Yes, and it was good you called us when you did,” Edina's father continued. “The Horsey was getting worn out.”

Clay, this is my Mom, Marta and my Dad, Paulo.”

Nice to meet you two,” he said as he got up to shake their hands.

Girls, do you want to tell Mr. Aiken how old you are?”

Yes, Jamie, tell me how old you are.” She held up her fingers.

How many fingers are you holding up?”

Five.”

So you're five years old?”

Yeah.”

Well five's a good number to be. Now Josie, how old are you?”

I'm six and a half. Can we pet your dog?”

Yes, you MAY pet my dog. You can both come sit down here next to her and pet her.”

Josie and Jamie sat on the floor and Raleigh enjoyed a four-handed scratch. “What's her name?” Josie asked.

Her name is Raleigh.”

Raleigh? That's a funny name,” Jamie replied.

Clay giggled a bit. “I suppose it is, but it's the name of my hometown, so her name means a lot to me.”

You know, we really shouldn't be hogging him, Edina. Why don't you take him over to Evie's. I can watch Raleigh for you, Clay.”

All right, thanks. That sounds good. I can't wait to see her.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Clay and Edina got in the car and drove up to the front of Evelyn's house. Clay took something out of the cooler before he followed Edina up to the front door.

She knocked and waited a moment. “Evie?” she called. No answer. “Hold on one sec,” she said in a low voice to him as she opened the unlocked door. Out in the country there wasn't a lot to worry about, and the two of them were like sisters, just walking in like family.

Evie, you here?” Edina called as they walked through the house toward the kitchen. Clay scanned the cozy, stylishly-decorated livingroom that looked like an L.A. bungalow. He noticed the almost inordinate amount of pictures, both hanging on walls and decorating the tables and cabinets, mixed with quite a few houseplants.

Evie?” Edina continued to call.

As they rounded through the dining area into the kitchen, he startled a moment when a round white blur quickly passed on his left into another room. Oh, I think she did mention cats. Edina opened the kitchen's exterior door.

Well, I didn't see her leave. She may be in the back yard.”

Off the back porch they scanned the large open yard, backed diagonally to a small plant-laden pond. “Evie, you out here?” Edina called.

Yeah, dear!” she yelled back from somewhere beyond the pond. “I'm watering the pumpkins!”

Evie and her pumpkins. That's all she could talk about when she saw the yard – growing pumpkins again.”

They walked toward the back of the property. Clay then noticed the long hose that led behind a stand of tall grass.

Evie, you've got a visitor,” Edina said loudly as they approached the grass.

Oh great – company, looking like this. Can't people call first, she thought. She laid the hose near one of the major vines and quickly tried to neaten her shirt and hair. Edina poked her head around the tall grass.

You decent, dear?” she joked. She had a huge grin on her face.

Yeah, I guess. Who's here?”

She stepped aside and out came the lanky redhead, smiling – with a bouquet of summer blooms he brought all the way from the most exclusive florist in L.A..

Oh. My. God.” were the only words her stunned brain could utter.

Hi Evelyn. I was driving through Idaho and thought I'd drop in.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

She smiled and walked to him. Edina watched them tightly wrap their arms around each other.

Oh God, it's so good to see you,” she said into his ear. “I'm so sorry I left the way I did.”

Jerome told me what you said, and I figured out the rest. I understand.”

I mean...I didn't leave until I knew you were out of danger and...”

I know. Really, it's okay, honey, I understand,” he replied reassuringly as he held her tighter. A tear came to her eye.

God, I'm so glad you're okay.”

They let go and he handed her the flowers. “I haven't had a chance until now to thank you for everything you did.”

She took a deep breath and drank in their exotic aroma. “They're just beautiful. Goodness, I can't believe you're here! Wait...did you say you DROVE here? From L.A.? All by yourself?”

Yeah, I drove, but I wasn't alone.”

Oh, really? Did Jerome insist on coming with you? I owe him a big thank you as well.”

Edina!” Mark called from Evelyn's back porch.

We're by the pumpkin patch, Mark!” Edina called back.

No, but he knows I'm here,” Clay replied. “Actually, except for you guys, Jerome's the only one who knows we're here.”

Who did you bring, then?” A tiny bit of jealousy ran through her.

Just then, Mark rounded the tall grass. “Here Clay, the girls were starting to get a little too playful with her,” he said as he handed over the dog's leash.

Oh God, it's Raleigh! How stupid am I – of course you'd bring Raleigh with you!” she gushed as Clay picked up the little dog. She stepped close to Clay and scratched her head, neck and ears. “Hi Sweetie...hi sweetie girl,” she said in a high, childlike tone as Raleigh's tail wagged fiercely and tongue tried to lick her face. Her eyes teared from the joy of the moment and she looked at Clay, who beamed a toothy grin through his giggles.

They make a cute couple, don't they,” Edina whispered to Mark.

Edina, don't start this now. He just got here.”

Let me turn the water off and we can go inside.” They all walked toward the house and up the porch steps as Evelyn went around the side of the house and turned off the spigot. He waited for her on the porch and they hugged once again when she came up the stairs. “Somebody pinch me,” she whispered as they embraced. He pulled back and gave the apple of her smiling cheek a soft tweak. “Pinch!”

She melted. You're just too friggin' cute for words. I feel like a teenager again, only better.

She gently laid the bouquet in the refrigerator for the time being. “So how was the drive up here? Did you have trouble finding the place?” she asked as they went through the kitchen and all four of them stood in the living room.

It was a long drive, but the GPS worked great, and some of the scenery was so spectacular that I had to stop a few times along the road and take pictures.”

How long are you going to be in town?”

I'm on vacation right now, but I have to be back home by the 14th to shoot something, so I was planning on four or five days.”

Wow, that long? Where are you staying?”

Well, I was thinking that maybe...you can recommend a place for us to stay?”

Mark piped up. “Well, about ten miles from here near the highway, there's a few motels, or if you go down another ten or fifteen, you'll get to the heart of Boise where there's plenty of nice hotels. I don't know if any of them take pets, though.”

Clay looked at her.

Or...I've...I've got a guest bedroom...if you can tolerate the cats.”

A big smile came over Clay's face and his eyes sparkled. Edina's eyes widened and a little smile came over her face as well. “C'mon Mark,” Edina whispered, “it's time for us to go.”

Mark continued, oblivious. “Oh, it would be great having another guy hanging around here for a while. If you need to know the nearest gas station or restaurant or...”

C'mon Mark,” Edina insisted as she pushed Mark toward the door. “I think I hear my Mom calling us.”

Oh, Lord, that woman can wait. Well...all right, we'll talk to you later, then. Nice to meet you, Clay.”

Nice to meet you both. See 'ya later.”

Bye guys.”

The door shut and she stared at him. “You know if you stay here I'm going to worry the whole time that the paparazzi are hiding in the bushes with long lenses. Come to think about it, I actually started worrying about that the minute I saw you.”

I thought you said nobody would know a star was here if he didn't tell anyone.”

Oh yeah, I did say that, didn't I.”

Don't worry, I kept a real low profile coming up here and I didn't see anyone follow me – I even left under cover of darkness! And you weren't kidding about being out in the middle of nowhere – it's about as rural as you can get – there's nothing but farmland for miles on the road I came in on.”

Yeah, I'm sorry I'm being panicky – it's a lot to take in, you being here. I guess I'm just in 'Jerome Mode,' since he's not here.”

A little disappointment showed in his eyes. “So...would you rather I not stay here?”

She just looked at him. It would take way too long to answer that question. She had already come up with three different reasons for and against, but her heart had only one answer.

Yes, of course, I want you to stay here.” She paused and shook her head. “But boy, of all the things I thought you were, impetuous and presumptuous were not on my list.”

He smiled. “Well actually, I surprised myself...but, I played a hunch.”

A hunch? About me?”

Maybe...I can tell you later. I'd...like to unpack and take a nap, if that's all right.”

Oh I see, what you REALLY need is some time to think of an explanation,” she chuckled. “That makes me even more curious, but okay, I'll let you off the hook...for now.” She sighed. In for a penny, in for a pound. “Well...if you're going to stay here, I should charge you something, you know, to make it...look legit and all. If the press finds out you're here, you could say you rented out a whole bed and breakfast. People would believe that...looking to get away to the country for some peace and quiet.”

Well, that's fine. I already came up with a cover story, but that scenario would fit into it.”

Oh, you did already? Okay.” She paused as a thought ran through her mind.

Jeez, it doesn't really feel like lying when the paparazzi is involved, does it?”

They looked at each other for a moment and both said, “Yeah, it does.”

You learn after a while it's like a war game,” Clay added, “and all is fair in...” He didn't finish.

Yeah, I understand.”

They looked at each other, then he gave her a little smile.

Thanks for letting us stay here.”

She gave a little smile back. “No problem. I rarely say no to a polite request.”

He laid his hands gently on her shoulders and kissed her cheek. She wrapped his arms around him and they hugged each other once more.

All right then, no more 'Jerome Mode' from you. I came to see Evelyn. I'm an adult and I made this decision to come here, so if things get out of control, I'll deal with it. I don't want you to worry about anything.”

She loved his take-charge attitude. Yes, Alpha Clay is here!

Okay, I promise. No more playing bodyguard. Well then, I guess I'll show you the guest bedroom. There's a few boxes that need to be moved off the bed, but it's all made. I think it'll be warm enough tonight, but I can get you an extra blanket. I know how you like your layers.”

They walked into the hall to the first door on the right. The first thing they both noticed when she opened the door were the dozen boxes stacked on the bed.

A few boxes?” he chuckled.

Oh, crap. Okay, maybe that was a bit of an understatement, but if you can help me take the boxes to the basement, I'll have the room spiffy in no time.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

He lay in bed and looked around the room as he awoke from his nap around 10 p.m. Even though it was windowless, the cozy guest bedroom was a welcome change from hotel rooms. Soft peach walls made a nice contrast to the antique dark cherry bed, dresser and blanket chest. The bed was dressed with a ragtag mix of soft colors and patterns from all the different linens she had collected over the years to create a 'shabby chic' style. It was so like being home...but she wasn't Mom and this wasn't Raleigh. It was almost...better than home...in some ways, he dared to think. He smelled something delicious and his stomach grumbled.

Hi, have a seat. I'm just about ready for you,” she said when Clay came into the living room, looking a little groggy and cowlicky, with Raleigh following behind. He saw the table nicely set for dinner.

My goodness, you didn't have to go through all this trouble. I'm the one who invaded on you.” He walked into the kitchen, drawn by the smell, “But, my stomach is really thanking you right now.”

Clay peeked into the oven. “Oh, look at that – what are those? They look like...little meatloaves.”

That's what they are. I wasn't sure if I should make meatloaf though. I don't know about you, but I'm REALLY picky about my meatloaf. Mine is pretty standard – I don't throw a bunch of veggies or funky spices in it or anything. Just plain-old Pennsylvania Farmgirl meatloaf like Mom made.”

He closed the oven. “That's really clever making them in a muffin pan like that.” He touched his stomach as it growled again. “Lord, I've eaten nothing but Krispy Kremes and orange juice for the last day or two – I hope my stomach remembers what real food is like.”

Good grief. Tell me, Mr. Singing Superstar, that you have a cook now so you don't have to always eat that way. It makes me sick to think you may still be running through drive-thrus.”

Actually, I do have a chef come in two days a week. Ryan...you know, Ryan Seacrest...”

Yes, how can anyone forget Ryan. He's only everywhere.”

Well, he recommended Jerry. I gave him Mom's mac n' cheese recipe and he makes it almost as well as her, but he also tries to make me eat new stuff. 'Expand your food horizons!' he's telling me all the time, and most of the time, I do like what he cooks. What's really great is that he makes extra and puts the leftovers in these nice reusable frozen dinner containers so I always have something good and fast to eat when he's not there. He's pretty funny, too – it's like having 'Emeril Live' in my house when he's busy cooking.”

Evelyn chuckled. “Well, that's good to hear. I assume what he's cooking is also a lot more nutritious – except for the mac n' cheese, of course. Lots of butter and lots of cheese, I'm sure?”

And I wouldn't like it any other way,” he smiled.

She threw half a stick of butter into the pot of drained boiled potatoes and got out her hand mixer. “Well tonight, it's just meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans. I bet Jerry would probably have a fit if he knew I was feeding you canned green beans. Would you get me the milk, please?”

He went to the refrigerator and got her the milk. “Oh, you're fine. It's not like I don't know what canned green beans taste like.” He leaned against the counter next to her as he watched her whip the boiled potatoes and slowly add the milk until it was the right consistency. She finished up and a wave of amazement suddenly flowed through her.

My God, YOU are standing right here next to me. I just can't believe you're here.” Tears welled in her eyes. “The last time I saw you...you were laying in that...”

He moved forward and held her. “Honey, it's okay, please don't keep beating yourself up about it. I completely understand why you left.”

I was so hasty, Clay, and I'm so sorry. By the time I got my rental car, I had calmed down, and all I wanted to do was keep my promise to you, but when I got back to the hospital, every reporter in the city had all the exits staked out. There was just no way...”

You came back to the hospital?” He held her tighter. “Oh honey, you really went through the wringer that day, didn't you? But, you've got to understand, it's just another challenge I go through in my life. Granted, that was the scariest reaction I've ever had, but it wasn't the first time I ever went anaphylactic, and unfortunately, it probably won't be the last. That plane ride proved that sometimes you do all the right things and you still have challenges. Actually, honey, it turned out to be a great lesson learned.”

He let go of her, but still held one of her hands. “Here, I want to show you something.” She turned the burner off and he walked her to his bedroom. From the floor, he picked up the old YMCA backpack from the plane.

By the way, thanks for making sure I had my bag and things. I would've hated bidding on my own backpack on Ebay.” Her tearstained face smiled and chuckled at his little joke. He opened the smaller outer pocket and pulled out two Epi-Pens. “You'll be happy to know that I don't go anywhere without two of them, now. If not me, maybe someone else will need the extra one day.”

That definitely makes me feel better.”

And let me show you this, too. It's something I had always intended to do, but never did until the plane ride.” He handed her a small business card case and she pulled one out to read.

My name is Clay Aiken and I have allergies.

The following foods can kill me,

so please don't serve them to me:

All tree nuts (incl. almonds, walnuts, pecans),

mint, chocolate, coffee, shellfish, mushrooms

Thanks for your cooperation.

Oh. My. God. Tell me you went a little overboard with the 'kill me' part, so you could get your point across.”

You were there! Okay, well, maybe for a couple of those things I exaggerated, but these little cards have worked like a charm. I just give it to the waiter, he takes it back to the chef, and I end up with a really great meal I don't have to worry about. I hardly ever look at a menu anymore.”

She smiled as she handed back the little case, but kept the one card she read for herself. “Since I'm going to be your cook for the next several days, I think I'll just stick this one up on the refrigerator. I pretty-much know all this, but it's nice to have a reminder.”

He smiled at her. “Are you feeling better now? Really, I'm fine.”

Yeah, I can see that.”

Now, I want you to be okay...okay?”

She smiled and saluted. “Yes, sir. You got it.”

All right, then. Let's eat – I'm starving!”

He awoke to the call of nature in the middle of the night. The digital alarm clock read 3:27 a.m. as he moved his feet to the floor. Raleigh stood up on the bed, knowing Daddy was going somewhere. In his undershirt and oversized pajama bottoms, he got out of bed, making a soft creek on the floor. He quietly opened the bedroom door and shuffled to the end of the short hall.

Hearing the creaking, she lay in bed with her eyes half open and listened to his footsteps and to the click of Raleigh's nails following him on the hardwood floor. It was a pleasant sound and it was nice to have a man in the house, especially this one. She smiled as she heard the bathroom door quietly close.

My God, I can't believe that Clay came here. He's HERE! She pondered the situation while she pet the sleeping ball of white fur next to her a few times before she started to purr. “Sorry you and Kona have to put up with with Raleigh for a while,” she whispered to Snowball, “but there was no way I was gonna say no, sweetie.”

She heard the bathroom door open and once again heard his shuffling feet, but this time, no clicking claws. A little part of her wished the next sound she would hear would be a knock on her bedroom door.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

He came out of the bathroom holding Raleigh, giving her a little scritch under her chin as he shuffled quietly down the hall. He didn't want to wake her. He passed his door, then her door, into the living room, where he now had the chance to take a better look at all the pictures displayed. In the dim light, he leaned close – one by one, he saw her – as a child with her family; happy times with her friends; high school; college. He then saw a set of four pictures displayed together of Mark and Edina's wedding, and next to it was of her wedding day. Huge joyful smiles were on both her and Matt's faces.

So that's what Matt looks like. “She looks ecstatic – like it was the best day of her life,” he whispered to Raleigh as he gave her another little scritch on the chin. “Maybe one day.”

He stood up straight and looked around the room, then remembered the life he had before the fame and fortune, the constant traveling and the constant recognition. A time when he really did want to do more with his singing, but didn't know what. A time when he had no idea how hard this “glamorous life” really was. He remembered when he was just a face in the crowd at the Crabtree Valley Mall, and not the center of attention. He had grown accustomed to most of this lifestyle, but that little ache was always there, and a wish went through him every once in a while for a chance to relive those days once again. But being here, now, in this quiet little house in the middle of farm country, that former life felt close enough to make him smile.

He shuffled quietly back to his room and plopped himself and his little companion back in bed. She heard his bedroom door quietly close, then took one long, last look at the dimly-lit picture on the wall behind the door before she fell back to sleep.

He is just so beautiful.

Clay? Is there anything you need washed?”

He buttoned his old jeans and came out of his room, where Evelyn was in the hallway with a basket of laundry.

Not right now, thanks, but I can do my own laundry if I need to.”

You sure? I'm running a load anyway.”

Well, she HAS already seen my drawers. “I'm okay for now, thanks.”

Okay, then. Oh, hey, I just figured out how you can pay me for staying here.”

You're not going to make ME to do YOUR laundry, are you?”

Oh no, that wasn't it...but that's definitely tempting. Heck, I'd pay YOU to see that.”

Uh, oh. This is why they keep telling me I talk too much.”

She giggled. “No actually, come down to the basement with me and I'll show you.”

Well, if we're both going downstairs...” Clay took the basket from her. “C'mon girl, let's go downstairs,” he called to Raleigh.

In the half-finished basement, Clay set the basket on top of the washer, then noticed the sheets, comforters and blankets piled high on her dryer.

THIS is what I could use your help with. It's hard for a short gal like me to fold all these neatly by myself and I have a thing about letting clean laundry touch the ground, so they've just piled up for a while.” She clasped her hands and looked up at him doe-eyed. “I could really use another pair of hands to help me – especially a pair of large...strong...masculine hands like yours!” Her eyelashes fluttered at him.

He couldn't help but giggle. He puffed out his chest, lifted his arms and flexed like a body builder. She jokingly swooned before him, trying hard, but unsuccessfully, not to laugh. His voice was deep and strong when he replied. “Stand aside, Miss, folding blankets is MAN'S work!” He couldn't hold back anymore and leaned in hysterical laughter into the pile. He saw her holding onto the corner of the dryer, doubled over laughing. Once they composed themselves, they each grabbed for the top blanket in the pile, backed up and started folding together. After a while, the washing machine was running and they both went back upstairs with an armload of folded linen.

Where do you want these?”

Most of them should fit in the blanket chest in your room.” They put all but three in the chest.

Looks like the others will have to go in my blanket chest.” Clay gathered them up as Evelyn opened her bedroom door. He set the blankets down then looked around the pale blue bedroom as she opened the chest and put them away.

Wow, this is very nice bedroom set, Ev,” he said as he stared at the chunky mahogany sleigh bed, matching dressers, mirrors and lingerie chest.

Yeah, it was all Mom's furniture. She bought one piece at a time for years and I've always loved it. Unfortunately, as you can see, this room is a little too small for so much big furniture, so I'd like to eventually bump out this entire side of the house about 10 feet. I want a really sweet bathroom, too, with a big, beautiful jacuzzi tub, a spa shower and a walk-in closet.”

Clay giggled. “I see you can take the girl out of L.A., but you can't take the L.A. out of the girl.”

Well, I really do feel more at home here, and there's no way I'll be able to live in L.A. again, so I figure why not make this little place as comfortable as possible. I never did feel completely at home in Columbus, but it was Matt's hometown and all his relatives were there, so I figured it was better to stay. Even though we're in the middle of nowhere here, this feels more like home to me. Being around Mark and Edina again made all the difference in the world, too.”

I bet it did – and Josie and Jamie seem like really great kids, too.”

Yeah, they're fine. I don't know how Mark and Edina keep up with them.”

They hear a knock at the door. “Evie?”

Come on in, dear!”

Edina grinned when she saw Evelyn and Clay come out of the bedroom together. All right, girlfriend, you're working fast!

She noticed Edina's grin and shot back her own look. Get your mind out of the gutter, Edna.

How are things going today? Clay, did you sleep well?”

Oh cripes, she's starting already.

I slept very well, thank you, what with being so full after Ev fixed meatloaf and mashed potatoes for me last night.”

Edina looked at Evelyn and they talked with their eyes.

Ev? Where did 'Ev' come from?

She shrugged a little. I don't know, but I like it.

Oh, did she make the little loaves?” Mark asked.

Yes she did, and everything was delicious. I was so hungry, too, I ate four of them. It was so nice of her to fix me something to eat at 10 o'clock at night.”

Yeah, Evie makes a good meatloaf,” Edina chimed while she still stared at Evelyn. Way to a man's heart, dear?

Time to change the subject. “So, what brings you both by?”

We decided that in honor of Clay's visit, we'd have a barbeque tomorrow,” Mark replied. “We'll cook up some hamburgers and chicken.”

Wow, that's really nice of you guys. I can never say no to a barbeque.”

Great! I've been looking for an excuse to fire up the grill. You want to help me cook tomorrow, Clay?”

I'm not the greatest griller in the world, but I'd be happy to help.”

Well, since the guys are doing the cooking, let me bring the drinks and dessert and I'll make potato salad. We can go to the store tonight and pick up a few things.”

Oh, man, it's been a long time since I've had your potato salad,” Mark gushed. “Now I REALLY can't wait for tomorrow!”

Clay giggled. “That good, huh?”

Mark likes it with extra egg.”

Whatever you do to it, Evie, it's perfect.”

Edina looked over at Evelyn again and sighed. “I see I'm going to have to break out the big guns now. Mark, baby, I'LL make you my special barbeque baked beans.”

Evie's potato salad AND your barbeque beans – it must be my birthday! Clay, you should visit more often.”

So what time are we talking tomorrow?”

We were thinking we'll fire up the grill at one o'clock and start cooking at 1:30.”

Sounds good. We'll see you then.”

Evie, I'll call you later with other...details.”

Okay, talk to you later.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The phone rang and Clay brought Evelyn her cellphone.

Hello?”

You having a nice time with Clay there, dear?”

Hi Edina.”

Oh, he's right there, isn't he?”

We're going to sit down for breakfast in a couple minutes.”

Little late for breakfast, don't you think, EV?”

I need to pick up potatoes, eggs and all the utensils at the store. You need anything while I'm going?”

Okay, sorry. But you are enjoying having him there! Didn't I tell you you'd hear from him?”

Evelyn handed Clay a wooden spoon. “Clay, will you stir the eggs a minute while I write down what Edina needs?”

Are you sure you want me in charge of the eggs?”

I trust you. Just keep stirring slow and yell when they look ready.”

Evie went into her bedroom and closed the door almost all the way.

Yeah, you did tell me that. You had a lot more faith than I did, but neither of us got anywhere near to thinking he'd actually come here.”

A thousand miles is a long way to say thank you.”

Yeah, it is. Do you think maybe...”

I don't think 'maybe' applies here, dear.”

Oh, my God. Well what...”

Ev, I think the eggs are done,” Clay called from the kitchen. “You'd better come here quick!”

Okay, take them off the stove and keep stirring, I'll be right there!”

I won't keep you...and I'll be sure you guys are left alone today. Enjoy your breakfast...and anything else.”

Dang, you're bad. Okay, see you later.”

Evelyn hurried back to Clay and he handed her the spoon. “Oh good, I was getting a little panicked. All of a sudden the eggs looked done and I didn't want to burn them.”

The eggs are just fine. Thanks for helping.”

Clay poured some food for Raleigh then sat down while Evelyn set the plates of sausage and eggs on the table, then sat to his right. Clay took her hand and smiled. She followed suit when she saw him bow his head.

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for this meal and thank you for the many blessings You've given us. And thank you for giving me the opportunity to be with Evelyn and to meet Mark and Edina and their family. In Jesus name, amen.”

Clay squeezed her hand. “I was so tired that I forgot to say grace at dinner last night. I hope you don't mind.”

No, you're fine,” she smiled.

They both dug into their meal.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Hey, Ev?” he said as he sprinkled extra cheese over his eggs. There was a bit of seriousness in his tone.

Yes? Anything wrong?”

Well, I'm not exactly sure if there's something wrong or not. It's just that...I'm a little concerned about going to the grocery store. Are you sure me going along is such a good idea? I mean, you said yourself you were worried about the paparazzi looking at us with long lenses, and this is like serving me up on a silver platter, isn't it?”

Her eyes widened. “Oh crap, you're right. How could I have so reckless. I've enjoyed having YOU here so much that I had forgotten for a moment that I had CLAY AIKEN here, too. I know better than that. I'm so sorry.”

No apologies necessary, I know what you mean. This place has a way of lulling a person into a false sense of security – not that I'm complaining. I know I've hardly been here a day, but I really enjoy being here, Ev.”

She smiled at him. “Wow, thanks. I'm enjoying having you here.” She sat there and thought more about the predicament. Clay just watched her quietly, studying her face while the gears spun behind her dark eyes.

Well, I'll tell you what, you make the call. If we go closer to evening, I doubt anyone would notice you, so there's no reason why you couldn't at least ride with me. We could either go to the supermarket and you wait out in the truck, or, how about we go to Smythe's Market, this little mom and pop grocery about seven or eight miles from here. It's a cute little store – old fashioned. Sometimes Edina and I will go there just for the heck of it. The closer we go toward closing time, the fewer people will be there. I think you'd be okay, but just to be on the safe side, you could wear something plain – just jeans and a t-shirt or something – I bet I can find a cap for you to wear. It wouldn't take much to make you look like a teenager.”

He smiled as his anxiety lifted. “Where there's a will there's a way?”

I suppose so. It's up to you – think about it and let me know. The supermarket's open until midnight and Smythe's stays open until 10.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

After breakfast, they both went outside and meandered around the large property. Raleigh thoroughly enjoyed the new smells and kept up with Daddy and his new friend. At the far end of the parcel, they walked around the back pond to a large hammock slung between two maple trees. Clay got in first and steadied the hammock as Evelyn slipped in the opposite direction so they could look at each other while they talked. Raleigh sniffed around the trees and at the edge of the pond while Clay and Evelyn lay back quietly, looked up through the branches to the clear blue sky and listened to the light breeze rustle the leaves.

It's all you said and more out here, Ev. It's so peaceful.”

Yeah, it really is. It's one of the nicest days I've seen here, too. You must've brought the mild weather with you from L.A. So, what's been going on lately in your world, if you don't mind me asking. I don't keep up with the fan sites like I did before.”

Before...Matt?”

Yeah. It's been quite a while.”

He reached out for her hand. “I won't pry, honey, but if you ever want to talk about it, I'm here.”

She paused and smiled at him. He could see both pain and strength in her eyes. “Thanks, that's sweet. Maybe I'll take you up on that sometime. Right now, has Hollywood been treating you okay?”

Not too bad lately, but they're always keeping me busy with something. I finished recording my part of the new album about a month ago and now the geniuses behind the scenes are finishing it up. It looks like I'll tour again sometime within the next year, once the new cd is out. Right now, though, I'm glad I managed to get some time during these nice summer months to get away and relax.”

Your free time must be so precious to you.” She paused as her heart swelled. “And you decided to spend that little free time with me.”

I did.”

But...well, why me?”

Why not you? I wanted to see you again.”

But, you could have just called me to talk.”

Actually, I did try calling, but I think you accidentally wrote down your old number.”

I did? But still...”

He found her hand again and gave it a squeeze.

Ev – I wanted to see you. I enjoyed our time on the plane very much – you were great to talk with. And what you did for me when I had the reaction...I can't thank you enough. I wanted to come here to see you and everything you told me about this place. I wanted...to get to know you better.”

She was silent a moment as she absorbed his words. “Was that the hunch you were telling me about? That...maybe I wanted to get to know you better, too?”

He looked at her. “I suppose it is.”

She smiled a little. It made her excited, then she became nervous when some of the gravity of his confession sunk in. She decided to change the subject.

So, um...you said something about needing to be back by a certain date?”

I need to be back by the 14th. Actually, it's pretty exciting.” He paused a moment and wondered if he should reveal his new deal.

Oh, really? Can you say what it is?”

I really shouldn't. The deal's been made, but the whole thing may not be let loose on the public for quite a while.”

Okay, I understand. Well, whatever it is, I hope it's something that makes you happy.”

He was quiet a few moments. They stared at Raleigh by the pond.

Promise you won't tell?”

She smiled in anticipation. “Of course I promise, and I think you already know I'm good at keeping secrets.”

That's true, though you did tell Edina about the plane.”

What? How did you find that out? Did she? Okay, well, in my defense...”

It's okay, Ev,” he giggled. “I'm sorry for being a little snarky – there's no need to defend yourself. It was a lot to go through, and I certainly can't blame you for needing to talk with someone about it.”

She smiled as he looked at her a moment. “Okay, well. After all these years, I'm finally going to be a spokesperson.”

Oh, how cool. Who is it...or is that all the news I get to know?”

No, I'll tell you. We're filming the first commercial on the 14th. Nothing is going to be formally announced – they're trying to keep it a surprise until they choose a big day to premiere it. They may not even run it until the Super Bowl. Anyway, this company hasn't had a spokesperson in years and decided enough time had gone buy to find a new one, and apparently they thought I would be a good 'wholesome, Middle-America'-kind of fit for them.”

Okay, now you really have my curiosity piqued.”

He's quiet a moment and grins. “You PROMISE you...”

CRIPES, I PROMISE ALREADY! I swear, not even Mark and Edina. Spill it, Aiken, before I smack you!”

He's loved the anticipation he cruely built in her. “You should be particularly happy to hear about this, considering the company is in what was your neck of the woods.”

My neck of the woods? Danget, don't give me riddles NOW.”

You know...they're headquartered where you USED to live?”

She muttered as she thought. “Where I used to live? Columbus. And they haven't had a spokesperson for...” Her eyes went wide. “Oh, my God. Are you going to be the new...Dave Thomas?” Clay smiled big. “Wow, how cool is that! You're going to be Wendy's new spokesman!”

Now you promise you won't...”

She smacked him on the arm and he jokingly cowered. “Okay, okay! I see I've pushed you enough with that! Sick her, Raleigh girl, she's attacking me!”

Oh man, you'd be so perfect for that. I think Dave would be very happy with their choice, God rest his soul.”

Well, I've always liked the Wendy's commercials and I've always liked their food. I'll do my best to live up to 'Dave's Way.' Anyway, the initial concept of the first commercial is that an announcer will do a voiceover as this car comes up to the drive-thru speaker. The darkened window rolls down and there I am, placing my usual order.”

Now, that would be a #2, but I never could remember how you took it.”

Goodness, you know that?”

The whole Clay Nation knows, honey.”

Well, right, a #2. At least you couldn't remember everything about that. So, they're thinking that after I place my order, I'll look into the camera and give the 'Aiken Wink.'”

Oh, that'll be adorable. Short and sweet. I'm so happy for you. That is such a HUGE deal!”

Yeah, actually, it is.”

Ooh, big bucks, huh?”

No comment on that, but let's say the BAF will be able to do a lot more soon. Hopefully it'll get the additional momentum that it's lacked over the last year or so.”

You've got some big dreams for it, don't you?”

I do. More than I can count, Ev. The BAF has already made a difference in a few communities, like Kansas City and Santa Fe, and it'll take a lot more time and money; but, I'm not going anywhere, and I'm trying my best to be patient and get the programs implemented one community at a time while we work with Congress on the national side.”

Evelyn just stared at Clay as he spoke. Why do I suddenly feel so unworthy to even be sitting here talking to you.

You will never lack for being busy, will you? Just make sure you don't get so deep in the music industry and in the BAF that you lose yourself. I'd hate to think that this is last real vacation you'll ever take.”

Well...I know that I'm my own best advocate, and I know that if I don't stand up for myself every once in a while, no one else will. But...I'm hoping someday I'll have a wife to nag me about it, too.”

She got quiet, startled by what he revealed.

Yeah, I hope she does. If she loves you, she definitely will. I just hope you'll listen to her.”

He smiled. “I promise I will.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

You ready to go, Ev? You said Smythe's closes at 10?”

Be right there,” she called as she put on the last of her makeup. She came out of the bedroom wearing her favorite outfit – tight jeans, cut to accommodate her brown suede boots; a soft, rather fitting baby blue tee, and a green butterfly necklace – her hair and makeup was soft, but sexy.

Oh good, you've got on just a t-shirt and cargos.” Lord, he looks great in anything. “Here's a cap for you. Nobody will think you're a day past 18.”

He put the hat on backwards. “With you looking like THAT, nobody will notice me at all! Now, you told me to dress plain – was this your strategy – they'll all look at you and I'll blend into the background?”

Well, that and I wanted to look my hottest for you. “You complaining?”

Not at all!”

Let's get going, then.” Clay picked up Raleigh and let Evelyn walk ahead of him outside. He watched with pleasure at how her jeans flattered her feminine curves, and the boots gave a subtle, yet confident swagger to her step. Once she turned on the old white Ford Explorer, Clay immediately rolled down his window to cool off and kept Raleigh in his lap. As they rolled down to the end of the gravel drive, she tooted the horn and they both waved to Edina and the girls on their front porch, and they all waved back. As they drove down the country road, Evelyn scanned past a few radio stations, then turned up the volume on the classic rock station.

Oh cool, Van Morrison!. I love this song!”

And everything looks so complete
When you're walkin' out on the street
And the wind catches your feet
Sends you flyin', cryin'
Ooo-ooh-wee, the wild night is calling

Evelyn rolled down her window and bopped along to the music, and Clay gladly followed suit while Raleigh's head stuck out the open window.

Didn't John Mellencamp do this song, too?”

Yeah he did – I love that version, too.”

Come on out and dance
Whoa, come on out and make romance
Come on out and dance
Come on out, make romance

Wow, this L.A. Girl has turned into a Good Ole' Girl before my eyes! he thought. I don't think she's THAT much older than me, but I'm really beginning to see what Ashton Kutcher sees in Demi Moore.

They continued to enjoy the cranked-up classic rock on the 25 minute drive to Smythe's. Just as she suspected, the little market was nearly deserted when they arrived. “Raleigh, now you be a good girl while we're gone. We won't be long.”

Go ahead and pick up whatever you want to eat while you're here,” she said as she pulled a small cart from the cariole. “Sorry, they're not going to have Krispy Kremes here, but they do make very sinful cinnamon rolls and other baked goodies.”

Yeah, I would like to buy some cereal while we're here. Don't forget to pick up what Edina needs, too.”

What Edina needs?”

Oh no, did you leave the list you made while you were on the phone with her at home?”

Oh yeah, THAT 'list.' “Darnet, yeah, I did. Actually, it was a short list. I remember what's on it.”

Well, that's good. I wouldn't want to see you have to make another trip just for one or two things.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

That worked out really well,” Clay said as he hoisted the bag of potatoes onto the kitchen counter and emptied the contents of two grocery bags.

Evelyn pulled a large pot from a cabinet and ran it under the tap. “I can finish putting everything away and you can just take it easy while I make the potato salad.”

Oh no, let me give you a hand. It'll get done faster.”

Well, are you sure? It would be a big help.”

Ev, I can peel a few potatoes.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Okay, this is a lot of potatoes to peel and cut. I don't think I'm going to want to see another potato as long as I live,” he said as they both leaned over the sink and finished the last few.

She looked at him and chuckled. “Boy, I wish I had a picture of you right now, all hunched over and worn out.”

If the Clay Nation could see me now,” he chuckled.

Don't sell yourself short – they'd be all over what I'm looking at. “I really do appreciate your help and I hope you like it once it's done.”

We both know Mark'll be happy.”

Well, that's why I have to make so much! Mark's going to want all the leftovers he can get his hands on, but I want to keep a couple days' worth for us.”

Once the large pot was full and cooking, they flopped on either side of the couch to relax and turned on the tv. Evelyn flipped through a few stations and came across the beginning of Goldfinger.

Ooh, a Bond flick. Have you ever seen Goldfinger?”

This is a Sean Connery one, right? Mom didn't exactly let us watch those kinds of films growing up.”

Well, I can turn it if you'd rather watch something else.”

No, it's okay. I've seen a couple of the Pierce Brosnan ones and one of the other guys. What's this one about?”

This is the one where the gal is all painted gold and the crazy rich guy wants to steal all the money from Fort Knox.”

Yeah, you can keep it here.”

After a little while, Clay felt compelled to comment about some of Bond's sexist behavior.

I can't believe how...rough...they treat women in some of these older Bond movies. What is it that women see in James Bond? Okay, well, besides tall, dark and handsome.”

She chuckled and thought a moment. “Well, the British accent, for one, although I guess in Sean Connery's case, it's the Scottish accent. He's mysterious, a little dangerous – he makes their hearts pound. They don't know what to expect from him, but they know he'll protect them at any cost. It's taking a walk on the wild side. It's just fantasy.”

Memories he'd rather stay forgotten rose up. But the reality of it isn't pretty.

Well...It's not how I treat women.”

I know, Sweetie, and I love you even more because of it.

No...you don't treat women that way and you should be proud of that. If there were more guys like you in the world, there would be a lot more happy women.” She paused a moment and smiled. “Actually, there ARE a lot more happy women because you're in the world.”

He looked over at her. You are amazing, Evelyn Whitcomb. I'm so glad I'm here with you. He went over to the her, sat down and embraced her tight.

Thanks, I needed that,” he whispered.

Well, it's true. You're a man of great character.” It was one of the things I loved most about Matt, too.

I'm exhausted. I think I'm going to get some sleep now.”

Yeah, it is getting late. Once the potatoes are done, it'll only take me about 10 minutes to finish up. Thanks so much for all your help.”

You're very welcome. Today was a really great day.”

He saw a twinkle in her dark eyes. Should I? It feels so right. Clay looked into her with heavy lids then moved slightly forward.

A moment can vanish so fast.

She felt his intention and a little accepting smile showed on her face. There was no doubt she would let him. He leaned further to her and tenderly pressed his pink lips to hers. Her hand lifted to gently touch his rough face.

Good night, Ev.”

Good night, Clay. Sweet dreams.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

A thousand flashes flew as he waved to the reporters from midway up the steps of the private plane. He knew he was their Golden Boy, making them plenty of money off all those female fans with every picture and article they printed and aired. He was especially photogenic tonight – he had changed into an outfit that would drop the entire Cult of Clay population to their knees, but he hoped that in a little while, just one would do so. He made his final wave to the hungry corps and ran up into the plane.

She sat in a large leather chair halfway back in the luxurious jet, going over some tour paperwork. She saw all the flashes outside – he'd be aboard any second. Even though she had worked for him for a while and was always business when she was with him, deep down, she wanted him as much as the next red-blooded American girl.

The high-pitched whine of the plane warming up drowned out hearing any footsteps or words spoken as he entered the plane. All she could see was him stepping aboard, then the captain closed the door. He stood there briefly and talked to the captain, and that's when she noticed what he was wearing. She maintained her blank stare, but her heart was heading for her throat.

It was a very fitting black leather jacket that came just slightly below his waist – the rear view was tight and exquisite...what kind of jeans are those, anyway? She couldn't see much more until he sat down on the leather banquette across from her, then she just looked back down at her paperwork.

That had to be my best performance to date. I thought I was great in Albuquerque, but tonight beat that by a landslide.”

She knew what he was talking about, and yes, he performed almost too well. Her knees went weak more than once or twice over tonight's extraordinary performance.

Yeah, you were really great tonight.”

Just great? I was a BLAZING FIRE tonight!”

He paused. The fire, however, isn't out yet, honey.

He looked at her, looking down at her paperwork. Isn't that cute – she's being coy. She's always coy, which only... His eyes closed and his heart raced even more.

They were both quiet as the plane took off and got to cruising altitude. I'll let her sit there and simmer a little. All the better...

The captain turned off the seatbelt sign. Two hours until the plane lands...I wonder how we could pass the time? A devilish little smile came over his face as he looked across at her. She sat with her eyes closed, hands gripped to her chair.

Time to start this delicious game.

Now, why would someone who's afraid of flying take a job as a tour manager?” I've seen the answer to that in her eyes - brief glimpses of what's underneath that cool exterior.

A bit speechless, the real reason flew through her mind first. Because you're hotter than molten steel and there was no way I was going to pass this up. Then she looked up at him.

Well, it was a great opportunity, and at least the flying doesn't happen too much on this tour.”

Isn't she the little liar...but that's okay. Let's start taking her mind off her fear of flying.

Well, that's true,” he said as he unbuckled his seatbelt, stood up and removed his jacket. “Opportunities like this don't come around very often.” He draped the jacket across his arm and gave her a quick subtle pose just before he turned and took a step away from her, reached up to get a hanger and hung the jacket up in the small closet.

Oh, holy... She got more than enough of a look at him now. He's never worn jeans slung THAT low before!

The tightest low-slung jeans, in almost an unworldly shade of dark blue. Subtle tonal stripes ran down the length and accentuated his already lanky figure and shapely apple of an ass. How in the world can anyone say he couldn't be a model.

Got enough of the backside, honey? Here comes the other half of the show.

Just as he closed the closet door, he slowly turned and faked a yawn – spreading his legs and lifting his arms up high, he seductively stretched his entire body.

She stopped breathing as she watched. That beautiful body was wrapped in a thin, illegally-tight rust-colored t-shirt – his back arched just enough so that the contours of his toned chest were marvelously displayed. The shirt sleeves were just a little extra short, making his arms look even longer and more defined. She took it all in, from his slender outstretched fingers down to his... Oh, my God, when did he buy THOSE boots?!? But what she noticed most of all – worst of all – was his navel on his flat stomach, flanked by the contours of his hipbones, followed quickly by a road of cinnamon hair leading below the waist of those evil jeans. He sat back down on the banquette with his legs stretched out and knees quite apart.

She couldn't take it anymore and unbuckled her seatbelt. “Excuse me, I'll be back in a minute.” She rushed to the end of the cabin and into the lavatory.

Shit, this is going even better than I thought. She's NEVER been out of that chair in-flight.

She ran a washcloth under the cold water and patted her neck, trying to cool herself. In the mirror, she saw the shower onboard and wished she could cool herself off that way. She sat on the toilet seat, folded her arm and rested her head for a few minutes.

Settle down, take it easy,” she mumbled quietly to herself. “He doesn't know what he's doing to you. He doesn't know just how stunning he is. Just calm down and take a deep breath.” Soon her heart was back to beating normally and she camesout of the lavatory. After taking a few steps forward, Clay suddenly lept up and approached, stopping just a step before her. He slid his thumbs into his front belt loops and the rest of his fingers into his very tight pockets, which caused the waist of his jeans to lower even more, into an almost obscene position.

Hello, honey.”

Um, hello.”

Are you feeling all right?”

Her heart didn't remain long in her chest. She felt her throat become dry and she swallowed.

Yes, fine thanks.”

He took a step forward. “I think you're lying to me.”

She took a step backward. “What? Why would I...?”

I think the cabin's become a little too warm for you.”

Sweet Jesus, help me.

He took another step forward. “Tell me, do you like my outfit?”

She took another step back. “Well...it's very flattering on you.”

I'm glad you like it. I wore it just for you.”

He took a last step forward. Her last step back knocked her against the door and gave her quite a startle. He couldn't help but give off an evil little crooky grin. The fear in those beautiful dark eyes of hers is making this all the sweeter.

Clay, are...are you trying to...to...um...seduce...me?”

He paused and grinned like a cheshire cat, and a playful look mixed with the sparks in his jade green eyes.

I'm doing the best I can to do just that.”

Okay, well maybe he does know how stunning he is, just a little.

She grabbed for the doorhandle as he took another half-step forward and reached for her. As if by instinct, her eyes rolled back at the feel of his caress across her cheekbone. He delighted in her reaction.

Do you know how it feels to have ten thousand women's libidos wrapped around your finger?”

No...no, I can't say as I'd know that. I bet it's...”

...It's the most incredible high...the most AMAZING aphrodisiac. But tonight, if you can believe it, I discovered an even more potent aphrodisiac.”

She smelled hot cinnamon on his breath as he spoke and she swallowed once more.

Wha-...what would that be?”

Before going onstage tonight, I thought about being on this plane with you, having you for hours all to myself. And when I performed in front of those ten thousand screaming women, I was performing only for you, and they went wilder tonight than any other time I can remember.”

He slid one finger and lifted up her chin. His eyes pierced hers so hard it hurt.

We were all getting off in that arena because of you...and the way you make my entire being ache for your touch.”

He slid his finger under her chin and down the low, open neck of her ivory silk blouse, then lifted the green butterfly pendant off her chest and glanced at it with a satisfied smile. His eyes pierced hers once more.

And now you're right here, shaking like a leaf, my butterfly.”

She was shaking. “This is making me quite...nervous.”

He snickered. “Oh, I don't think you're nervous, honey. I think you're exhilarated.” His finger slid down the buttons of her blouse to her waist. He moved his hand to the small of her back and pulled her forward as he pressed his lips hard against hers.

This IS what you want, isn't it?” He seemed to speak telepathically. He leaned forward and pressed her hard against the door, grinding his hips into hers, just to make sure she knew how aroused he was. Her knees grew weak and she could barely speak as he lifted his weight from her.

I...I...”

I KNOW this is what you want. Tell me. Say it.”

I...yes...yes, I want this.”

He ran the fingers of his left hand through her soft hair and his mouth went to her ear. Her eyes closed as she heard and felt his warm breath invade her ear; his lips and tongue indulged on her earlobe.

You taste so good,” he spoke again to her mind. She couldn't understand how she remained standing. He gave her lobe one last flicker as his lips moved slightly away.

Call me what I want to be called,” he whispered.

What?” she weakly asked. He replied slowly, in a low, throaty voice.

I know you read that story, and I know you've cried that name out a million times, wishing I was there with you, bringing you to sweet, powerful climax.” He ran his fingers lightly up her neck and she moved with his touch. He leaned to her ear and whispered his demand again.

Call me what I want to be called.”

Clayton...” she sighed.

Yes,” he whispered long and slow as he closed his eyes. His hands glided around her shoulders and traced her breasts, then he looked right down into her eyes.

Say it again. Call my name.”

He towered over her. There was no escape.

Clayton...”

Yes, honey,” he breathed.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Clay came out of his room and quietly padded down the hall toward the bathroom with Raleigh following him.

Clayton” he heard coming from her room.

Yeah?” he answered rather softly, forgetting there was really just them in the house. He went to her door and debated whether to open it.

Clayton” he heard again. He slowly cracked open the door so just his head poked inside.

Yes, honey?” he said softly. He could see she was still asleep, laying on her side; her bare shoulder and arm showed above the covers and her hand was tightly clutched to the pillow.

The little dog walked into the room, around to the far side of the bed.

Oh, my God! he thought as panic overthrew him. “Raleigh, come here, girl. Come here,” he whispered, hoping she'll come back. Raleigh jumped up on the foot of the big bed, looked at Clay and lay down.

Sparks emitted from Clay's eyes over her obvious insubordination. Wait 'til I get my hands on you. “Come here, you naughty girl,” he whispered again. Finally, the call of nature was too much for him to wait around. He quietly closed the door and shuffled down the hall while he quietly muttered to himself.

Okay, you just stay right there, princess. I'll be making an appointment for you with the dog trainer as soon as we're back home, just you wait.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

He bent down and lightly wrapped his long fingers around her ankles, then slowly lifted himself up, caressing her calves and knees with his fingertips as he went. He stopped just below the hem of her silk skirt and whispered.

You have the smoothest skin. I bet you...” A flush came over him at his thought – he closed his eyes, drank in a deep breath, then opened them once more. “You always smell like baby oil. I bet you use it every time you get out of the shower.”

There was a jolt, and suddenly they were in the same position, only now, against the inside of the lavatory door.

As her heart fluttered, she took in a ragged breath. “Is this your way of breaking my fear of flying...or...of...breaking me?”

He grinned from one side of his mouth. “I have no intention of breaking anything – unless we knock something over, of course. How can you break someone when what you want is bubbling just below their surface? Your surface. You've made it almost too easy – not that I'm complaining – I've enjoyed what little fight you've put up.”

He paused and stood up a bit more, raising her skirt ever-so slightly; he never released her from his gaze. “And let's just say that breaking that silly little fear will be a great side benefit.”

For several long seconds they stared – she looked deep into his hungry jade eyes and wanted what they were giving. She moved her head slightly toward his but stopped, as if the final shred of her will was in a last, desperate hold. The hold broke when he smiled and met her lips the rest of the way. A soft, tender brushing it was – her head leaned back against the door as she acquiesced to his kiss. As she took a deep breath, he tilted his head and slid her skirt up just a bit more, gently kneading the backs of her thighs. His tongue slipped across her teeth and searched for hers.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I'm feeling a little dirty, honey.”

You're more than a little dirty tonight.”

And you're loving it. I'm beginning to think maybe you do know how much you turn me on every time you're being coy.”

We can't do this.”

He lightly ran his fingers through her hair. “Oh, yes we can...and we will...and it will be BEYOND amazing. There aren't any scruples in this place.” He leaned to her ear and whispered, “Remember the line from that movie you like so much? 'Let your mind go and your body will follow.'”

A small but powerful wave flowed through her head to toe. He could see the change in her eyes and smiled.

Care to help me get cleaned up, honey? Or better yet, how about we both get a lot MORE dirty, then we can BOTH get cleaned up.”

Suddenly the plane made a sharp descent and knocked both of them off their feet. Next thing she knew, she lay on the floor of the main cabin, with Clay knelt high over her, his long legs stretched wide on either side of her hips. A smile grew on his face as he stared down at her.

This is a very good start, honey. What a naughty girl you are.”

He fell forward – she flinched, but his hands landed flat on the floor – his arms tall, straight and sturdy over her. He grinned as he pierced her eyes once more.

Impressive, butterfly – I loved this scene in Purple Rain.” He bent his arms and began to kiss her, quickly becoming all the deeper. As if by instinct, her hands reached up, and her fingers slid inside the low waist of those evil jeans – his ginger curls now caressed the back of her hands. She grabbed the jeans tight and pulled him down to her with all her strength. Her not-so-silent demand pleased him and he rewarded her with a slow, firm, undulating grind, pushing her hips hard into the floor again and again for what seemed a beautiful eternity. He lifted from her lips and watched her expressions of pleasure.

Open your eyes,” he whispered. She continued to feel him and be within the moment.

I want you to open your eyes, Evelyn,” he said with a bit more forcefulness.

With a little difficulty, she submitted to his demand and looked into those gorgeously-evil eyes. The moment she did, the grinding ceased and he sat up, kneeling lightly against her thighs. Never releasing her from his hard gaze, he reached for his jeans and unfastened the first button, then clutched the bottom of his shirt and peeled it right off his torso, wildly tossing it aside. With all control in his voice, he spoke.

You better hang on tight, because when this Double-O-Ticket ride is over, honey, you're not going to be able to look at ANYTHING in a plane without a little smile on your face.” She gasped as he grabbed her collar with both hands and in one furious move ripped all the buttons right off her blouse.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

She saw light through her closed eyes and the heard birds chirping. Slowly she awoke from her slumber, laying there remembering the dream she had...that really great dream. That utterly frickin' fantastic dream. I need to write it down before I forget, she thought, but at the moment, she just wanted to remember how he...and how she...and how they...WOW.

Oh God, it was wonderful and oh God, thank you for it. Oh God, Oh God, Oh God, teehee!

She rolled over onto her back. Man, why is my arm aching so bad? I must've slept wrong. She closed her eyes again, then turned over on her other side. “Ugh, my wrist,” she whispered as she made a fist a few times, hoping to loosen whatever was tight. Beyond her wrist, on the other side of the bed, came a small metallic sound and a movement. She moved her arm and saw Raleigh laying on her side, fluttering her tail.

What the hell?!?” she yelled.

From the kitchen table, eating a bowl of cereal, he heard her and winced.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

She sat up in bed, incredibly confused, and looked at the happy puppy. She reached over and gave her a scritch on the belly. “Your daddy has some explaining to do,” she whispered.

After a few minutes, curiosity got the better of her. She got out of bed and went into the bathroom to freshen up a bit. Okay, a lot.

The door to her bedroom finally opened and he heard the happy little click of nails scampering out, looking for Daddy, followed by Evelyn, also looking for Raleigh's daddy, with a rather blank look on her face.

Good morning, Clay.”

Morning. Looks like someone's been keeping you company.”

Yeah, but I didn't expect the dog, too!

Seems so. That's a great trick you trained her to do...opening doors all by herself.”

He chuckled. “I am SO sorry, Ev – I can explain.”

She pulled up a chair and sat down across the table from him and did her best Frasier Crane impression. “Go ahead caller...I'm listening.”

Well, I was in the hall a couple hours ago and heard you call my name. You called me again and I opened the door to see what you wanted, but you were still asleep. She snuck in and I didn't want to disturb you, so I just let her stay in there. I guess you were dreaming. You must've really been into it.”

Oh yeah, one of us was really into... “A dream...yes, I was dreaming. I seem to recall being in a plane.”

A plane? That's interesting. You want to tell me about it?”

No. Yes. YES. Better not.

Well, I don't remember much.”

Give it a try. I bet it'll come to you.”

She was quiet. God yes, IT already did – maybe twice!

Oh, won't you try telling me anyway? It's always fun to figure out what dreams mean. C'mon... you were in a plane.”

Oh, Lord. Think fast.

Um, you and I were on a private plane...and...it was...going down.”

Crap, great choice of words.

Oh Lord, we were BOTH in the plane and it was going to crash? Planes are a lot safer than that. Boy, you really do have a big fear of flying.”

Uh, yeah. Fear.” She got up from the table and went to the kitchen counter to pour some cereal. “Anyway, there was a lot of turmoil...it's plummeting...”

...over and over and over...

...and we're both together...um, SITTING together...”

...never mind what position that sitting came in...ooh, 'came in'...focus girl!

...and I'm really, really...frightened.” She opened the refrigerator and reached for the milk.

Sounds intense. Guess you must've been scared, the way your hand gripped your pillow.”

The milk container slipped out of her hand back onto the shelf and she looked at him.

I...I did what?”

He made a fist. “You were gripping your pillow with your hand like you were holding on for dear life.”

Oh, I certainly was holding on tight. She reached for the milk again and took it to the counter.

That would explain why my wrist is sore,” she muttered to herself. “Anyway...I kept..calling out to you.”

Funny, I'm usually a moaner, not a screamer.

Yeah, it's not often I hear someone call me 'Clayton,' especially when they're asleep.”

Her hands locked onto the counter. Holy sh...

Um, I said...Clayton?”

Yup. Strange how dreams get, huh. You don't call me Clayton. Oh, by the way, you know what you saying my name reminded me of? Between you, me and the wall, you know that line in The Way? Maybe it's the way that...I whisper your name when I'm asleep, oh girl – that line? Well, at the time I was uncomfortable with the actual line and we changed it. The line actually goes, Maybe it's the way that YOU whisper MY name when YOU'RE asleep. I had forgotten that until this morning.”

Holy God, I didn't need to hear that, although...oh, perchance to dream while awake. Okay, get back on track.

Sorry to interrupt there. Anything else about the dream?”

Huh? Oh...well you...you were...holding me, but, so much...turmoil. I just knew we both were going to crash and burn...and the rest of it is a big blur.”

...very big...perfectly big...

Oh my goodness, I'm sorry I made you remember that. It sounds awful, with things just spinning out of control like that.”

Yeah...we were spinning out of control...”

Well, I'm SO sorry for intruding earlier, and I'm sorry about Raleigh.”

Really, it's okay. No harm done.”

I mean, I tried to not be loud, but I called to her over and over again – 'come here girl, come here you naughty girl' – and she just wouldn't budge! She gets so defiant every now and again.”

She felt her knees go weak and her eyes close. Come...you...naughty...girl...come... Oh, Sweet Jesus.

Before she knew it, Clay's caught her around the waist. “Woah, are you okay?”

She lifted from her haze and looked into his kind jade eyes for a moment. You really were there right when...

Honey, are you okay?” he said in an even more concerned tone.

Yeah, I'm okay. Sorry, it's still early. Guess I'm still tired. If you don't mind, I'm gonna lay...LIE down for a little bit, then I'll take a sh-...um, I'll get cleaned up. Have you eaten?” 'Eaten'...oh, my God, I'm doing it to myself now!

Here, Ev, let me help you.” He held her tight and walked her to her room. “Don't worry about me, I had some cereal earlier. You take it easy. I'll go take a shower while you're resting. I promise I won't use up all the hot water.”

Oh Lord, he's gonna get naked in my shower...for the SECOND time this morning. Will this torture my mind created ever end?

Yeah, you go do that.” I'm sure my imagination will have a field day while it hears the water running. “Thanks, sweetie. I'll be fine in a little bit.”

All right. Call me if you need me.” He closed the door behind him and she threw herself full-body onto the bed in exasperation. She lay there a few moments and absorbed what he said and what she heard and what they did in the dream. She popped her head up and looked around the room with fire in her eyes.

Write...write NOW...where the HELL is that diary of mine?!?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

It felt good to help her, and she felt so good tight in his arms. I guess all guys want to feel like the big, strong man of the house, even skinny ole' me. It made him feel all the more at home there.

He went into his bedroom and gathered up his change of clothes. As he and Raleigh walked down the hall to the bathroom he hummed, then quietly sang to himself.

Maybe it's the way that...you whisper my name when you're asleep, oh girl...

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

...what he did, what he said, his very being – it was like Clay, only not Clay, and so much more than Clay. I didn't think it was possible to have such an erotic dream, nearly as clear as real life – I can hardly function...

She was startled by a light rapping on her door. She was so deep into writing her thoughts down in her diary that she hadn't paid attention to Clay's shower after all.

Ev?” he said gingerly from the other side.

She felt like she had been caught with her thoughts down and quickly sat up and tossed the diary and pen under her bed. “Yeah, Clay. It's open.” He opened the door and stood in the doorway, holding the knob. She was a little surprised to see he was completely dressed. “You're done already?”

Already? It's been an hour. I guess you really were tired.”

It's been that long? I guess I was.”

You okay?”

Um...yeah...better now.”

You sure? You have...kind of a funny look on your face.”

Her blush betrayed her innocent reply. “I do?”

Yeah, almost like...”

...like you feel guilty about something...

Never mind, it's nothing. I'm glad you're better. There's probably lots of hot water now. I'm gonna take Raleigh out in the back yard for a little while.”

Okay, that's fine. I'll be done in about half an hour. Oh, I just remembered! I'd better water the pumpkins before the barbeque. I may be too tired later.”

Well, I'll be outside if you need me.”

I'll be out in a little while.”

Okay.” Clay closed the door half way.

Clay?”

He opened the door a little bit and looked in. “Yeah?”

I...” She stopped then smiled at him. “Thanks for helping me earlier.”

He smiled back. “You're welcome, Ev. Anytime.”

She looked at the picture behind the door as it shut. “Can't he just stay here forever, Lord?”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Hi,” Clay simply said as Evelyn walked onto the back porch. She turned to her right and saw him sitting on the swing, with Raleigh resting on his lap.

Awww, isn't that the most adorable sight. You do know that she's the cutest dog EVER, don't you?”

Clay snickered. “I've been told that a few times. Her brothers and sisters were all cute, but she was the prettiest of the litter.”

She gave Raleigh a gentle little scritch on the head. “Yeah, she's your spoiled little princess.”

And she wouldn't have it any other way,” he quietly giggled and then was quiet.

Ev?”

She looked up from Raleigh. “Yeah?”

Are you sure everything is all right? I mean, today you seem a little...distant.”

Well...I thought I was okay...”

No, don't tell him about the dream. Maybe someday, but not now!

...but I guess that dream shook me up more than I realized. I'm sorry, Clay, I don't mean to be distant. I certainly don't want to be with you here. You know how sometimes a dream leaves you feeling...strange...for a while?”

Yeah, I do understand. I guess that was quite a powerful dream. Maybe the barbeque will help you shake off those feelings. I just...don't like seeing you this way...so...effected.” He scooted to his left. “Here. Just sit down and hold her for a little while. Maybe the cutest dog ever can help.”

Evelyn sat and he set the limp furry figure on her lap; a big grin came over her face. “You're letting me hold her? Aww, hi sweetie,” she said, then gingerly picked her up and laid the little dog against her chest, with her chin on her shoulder, and gently stroked her fur. Clay smiled when he saw how much better Raleigh already made her feel.

Thanks Raleigh for letting me hold you, sweetie.”

Oh yeah, you still need to water those pumpkins.”

Oh, thanks for reminding me!” She lifted herself from the swing and Clay touched her leg.

Hold on now, you don't need to do it this very second. Relax, Ev. It'll get done. Just keep me company. We've got at least an hour before the barbeque starts.”

You're right. I'm sorry.” She sat again and found Clay's arm behind her when she rested her neck against the swing. She looked at him – his body was pointed toward her.

Talk to me. Tell me something about you that you haven't told me yet.”

Ev was too caught up in the feeling of him being so attentive to think. “Well...I don't know where to start. I'm drawing a blank right now.”

Okay...how about I shoot you those 'this or that' questions, just for fun. It's silly, but all the interviewers love doing that.”

Well, okay. I'm game.”

Neat. Let's see...we'll start with a simple one. Even I know it now. Paper or plastic?”

She snickered. “Plastic.”

Coffee or tea?”

Tea. Earl Grey, hot.”

Clay giggled. “That's from Star Trek, isn't it? Okay. Dog or cat?”

She looked down at sleeping Raleigh, then back at Clay. “Sorry, but cat.”

He pretended to stand up. “Okay, that's it – game over. I'm packin' my bags...”

Hey now, be nice! I'm sorry you've had such a rough time with cats, but really, they're beautiful and I love my babies to death just like you love your spoiled princess.”

He stopped mid-stand. “Okay, okay. I guess I can forgive you for that one.” He sat back down and put his arm around her again, then got the swing gently rocking – it made a soft squeak as it moved back and forth.

Good. Gimme another one.”

Her dark eyes sparkled when she smiled. “Okay...Ford or Chevy?”

She laughed. “Oh, my God. I remember them asking you that question, and I remember saying 'Volvo' before you did. I KNEW you'd say Volvo. Oh heck, we ALL knew you'd say Volvo.”

So what's your answer?”

Well, actually it's Jaguar, so technically, that's Ford, and I've had my Explorer forever. Hey, isn't Volvo owned by Ford, too?”

Yeah, it is. Funny how we'd both like a Ford fancy 'off brand'. Okay, Round Two now. The questions get harder and the points double.”

Evelyn snickered. “Let 'er rip, Wink!”

Wink? Who's Wink?”

Oh crap, my age is showing. “Let me try that again. Let 'er rip, Alex!”

Oh, okay, I get it. Next question: Ginger or Mary Ann?”

What?!?”

C'mon, time's running on the clock!”

You're so silly. Okay...Eek...Ginger.”

Really? I didn't see you as going for the tall, pretty one.”

Evelyn's eyebrow raised as she looked him up and down. Clay's eyes grew wide.

Oh goodness. I'M Ginger, aren't I?”

I plead the fifth. Next question, Alex.”

All right, all right, but if I have Ginger nightmares, I'm blaming you.” He paused, and a playful grin came over him. “Real or fake?”

Now her eyes went wide and she made a gnarled smile. Cheeky monkey, he is. She looked down, stuck out her chest and confidently looked back at Clay. “Factory originals, baby!”

Instantly his mouth went agape and he laughed out loud. “I'll take your word for it,” he managed to say as he calmed himself enough to continue. “Okay, last question.”

Aww, just when I started to have fun!”

He wiped his eyes and finally settled down. “You ready?”

She rolled her eyes. “Yes, Alex.”

Hugs or kisses?”

She grew quiet and she stared at him. He saw what he hoped to see in her eyes.

Can't I say...”

Nope. Either, or. Sorry, those are the rules.”

She looked at Raleigh all snuggled, still asleep on her shoulder. “Then I guess hugs.”

Sorry, wrong answer. The correct answer is both.”

What? But you...”

And your consolation prize...is this.” She felt his hand press lightly on her right shoulder blade, which moved her slightly toward him as he leaned into her for a slow, soft kiss. Once their lips finally lifted, they rested their foreheads against each other.

Clay...have I mentioned yet...that I'm glad you're here?”

His left index finger delicately brushed her cheek and they looked at each other. “You don't need to tell me. I can see it in your eyes.”

Raleigh made a whimper and started to wake up. “Here, let me take her.” He slowly removed Raleigh from her shoulder and set her down on the swing to his left, and scooted closer to Evelyn. He turned to her again and brought his arm back around her shoulder, then tenderly lay his left hand on her knee.

Ev,” he whispered as his eyelids lowered and their lips met once again for a series of small, gentle kisses. Her eyes closed and she melted into him as she felt his soft, plump lips on hers. His hand left her leg and he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her closer. Her arms found his waist and they lightly embraced as they continued to softly kiss. They lifted from each other's lips, and he reached up to kiss her forehead, her eyelids, and then the tip of her nose. They both quietly snickered.

Okay. NOW you can go water those pumpkins,” he whispered. She smiled at him as they stood up, still holding each other. Clay looked over at his half-awake princess. “Raleigh, ready to go?” Her ears perked up and she jumped off the creaking swing. Clay and Ev walked arm-in-arm to the faucet, then to pumpkin patch, while Raleigh scampered behind.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Goodness gracious, look at all that potato salad!” Mark exclaimed as he watched Clay set a hefty bowl onto the picnic table, then looked up at Evelyn. “Have I told you lately that I love you, Evie?”

She chuckled. “Every time I make potato salad, you tell me that.”

Well, I do, you know.”

I know you do, Mark. I love you, too, darlin',” she replied as he gave her a hug.

You must love me to make so much. That's all going in my fridge later.”

She moved back over to Clay and whispered. “Told 'ya. And you said I was crazy to make so much. Thank God I left a bowl of it for us at home.”

Okay, I stand corrected,” he whispered back. “You know, I still haven't tried any of it.”

You haven't? How did I manage to not let you taste it? Well, you did go to bed before it was done last night.”

It was sort of a strange morning, too.”

You're right. I'm sorry.”

No need to be,” he smiled. “It got better when we were on the swing.”

She smiled and blushed a little. “Yeah, it did.” They gave each other a loving hug.

As she stood on her back porch, Edina spied their embrace and smiled. I wonder if she'll change her name to Evelyn Aiken or if she'll hyphenate again, she joked to herself as she walked into the yard with a crock pot, and the girls underfoot, followed closely by Marta and Paulo, bearing more large bowls of food.

Mark was in seventh heaven. “Yes, and now Edina's barbeque beans! Only thing missing is my birthday cake!”

Good Lord, are there more guests coming?” Clay exclaimed when he saw the vast quantities of beans, fruit salad and Chinese cole slaw. “Seems like an awful lot of food for just the bunch of us.”

Hey, if it keeps me from cooking for a couple nights, I'm all for it,” Edina replied.

Well, I've got the barbeque all fired up. Clay, can you help me get the meat from the fridge?”

All right, let's get to it. My stomach's starting to growl.” Clay bounded around the table and followed Mark while Edina and Evelyn watched the guys go into the house. It didn't take more than a few seconds for Edina to start the conversation.

How's it going? You two looked happy when we saw you leave last night.”

Yeah. It was a fun drive.”

So...what did you do when you got back?”

She just stared at Edina and let out a little frustrated sigh. “We peeled 10 pounds of potatoes is what we did! If you see either of us rubbing our backs, it was from being hunched over the damn sink, nothing else.”

Well, SOMETHING must've happened last night. I saw how the two of you just hugged each other.”

Believe me, nothing happened last night. Although...”

Edina's eyes widened. “Spill.”

He...did give me a kiss. A little one, when he said goodnight.”

Lips?”

Yeah. And, uh...a couple hours ago...”

Edina's eyebrows lifted. “WHAT a couple hours ago?”

We kissed.”

WE, not he?”

Yeah, we,” she confessed, then smiled. “It was really great...and that's ALL you're gonna get outta me, dear. God, you're like being around truth serum sometimes. Just keep it to yourself, okay?”

Edina gave her a hug. “Evie, I'm so happy for you. If anyone deserves to be happy in this life, it's you.”

Evelyn grinned. “Yeah, I'm kind of happy, too.”

Won't be long now! Mark exclaimed as he and Clay walked down the porch steps to the large, old-fashioned brick grill on the other side of the yard; each carried a big plate of chicken and burgers. Edina and Evelyn walked over to watch the guys cook while Marta, Paulo and the girls set the table.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Heavenly Father,” Paulo begun in his mild European accent, “we thank You for the food we are about to receive, may it nourish our bodies. We also thank You for bringing our guest, Clay, here with us, and we pray that he has a relaxing and joyful time during his visit. In Jesus name, amen.”

A small chorus of “amens” rose from the table.

Thank you very much, Paulo, that was very nice,” Clay said from across the table.

You're very welcome, Clay. Have you been having a nice visit?” Paulo replied as everyone passed around the food.

Yes, very nice. It's so beautiful and peaceful here.”

Yes, my wife and I, we were a little hesitent to move out into the country, considering we had been living in Los Angeles so long, but once we were all here, it didn't take long to get accustomed to the rural life. This must be very different from what you're accustomed to.”

Well, not entirely. I grew up and lived in Raleigh, North Carolina up until five years ago. It's not quite farm country, but it was sort of small town living. Definitely not as fast-paced as L.A. or New York. I do miss it sometimes.”

I understand, Clay. You always miss home. I still miss my little village in Hungary where I grew up, and I haven't lived there for over 40 years. You just make new memories in your new home.”

Yes, but I wish I was home long enough to be able to do that. Even though it's a beautiful house and I love knowing it's all mine, it still seems like the place I just sleep and shower. Just when I think I'm done and I can take a breather, I'm off and running again.”

Then it must be a welcome change to come here for a little rest and relaxation.”

Clay caught Evelyn looking at him and winked. “It's everything I hoped and more.”

Josie whispered to Edina. “Clay, the girls have something to ask you.”

He set his fork down. “Sure, girls. What do you want to ask me?” Clay replied as the girls approached.

Will you come with us to see the frog in the pond?” asked Josie.

Clay looked at Evelyn, and she gave him a little reassuring nod. She knew he was afraid of the water, but hoped he'd put that fear aside for the girls.

Sure girls, after we finish eating you can both show me the frog. May your Auntie Evie come with us?”

Evelyn smiled, happy he found a way to not disappoint the girls.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The frog's over here!” Jamie yelled as the girls ran to the pond. “I can hear him croaking, Jamie!” Josie replied.

Clay and Evelyn walked together about twenty feet behind the girls. Clay's anxiety heightened with every step, then he stopped. “Ev, I don't think I can do this.”

The girls aren't gonna push you in, and I swear I would never push you in. You don't want to disappoint them.”

No, I don't.” Clay took a deep breath and continued walking, but a little slower.

It may help you to know that a month after they moved here, Jamie drowned in the pond.”

Clay stopped again. “What? You wouldn't lie about something like that?”

You know how it goes – she wasn't even two at the time, and just like you said, sometimes you do all the right things and you still have challenges. They pulled her out and she wasn't breathing. Paulo did CPR and brought her back, and they ended up having a helicopter life-flight her to Children's Hospital in Boise.”

Goodness.” He looked over at the girls, happily scampering along the edge of the pond. “She doesn't seem afraid of the water.”

No, she's not at all. She can swim now; she really enjoys the pond and being in the water...supervised, of course.”

When you put it that way, it does seem pretty ludicrous to feel the way I do when she went through all that.”

I'll never tell you it is – you already know how much I hate to fly. Maybe this'll help.” Evelyn reached for him and they lightly embraced. Clay felt her familiar hold before, then he held her tight as he heard her whisper a little prayer of courage for him. He smiled and remembered that with God's strength, he could move mountains...and even be near a small pond.

Here's the frog! Come look at Froggie, Mr. Aiken!”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Evelyn rolled up her jeans to her knees. “How did I get roped into this? Of all people to suggest wading into the pond, he does.”

Clay removed his sandals while the girls did the same. I can do this...I can do this...If a child who drowned isn't afraid, then I can wade out, too. “How deep is this pond?”

Three feet, maybe four, but we are DEFINITELY not going out that deep. I hate wearing wet clothes.”

Clay stood up in his khaki shorts and big bare feet and took a deep breath. “You ready, girls?” he asked with a lilt in his voice as he tried to not let his phobia show. Josie and Jamie each grabbed a hand. “Ready!” they replied in tandem.

You ready, Ev?”

She glared at Clay. “Yeah, I'm ready.” She took Jamie's hand. “Now before we go, I want you all to repeat after me: If you fall in the water, remember to stand up.” Her hand motioned like a conductor.

If you fall in the water, remember to stand up!” everyone chanted.

Clay laughed. “It is that simple, isn't it?”

You'd be amazed how often we forget the obvious.”

Clay looked at Josie. “You're the leader, Josie. Remember now, we're only wading up to our knees. We'll all follow you.”

Josie started singing and marched the four to the pond's edge.

The ants go marching one-by-one, hurrah, hurrah...

Clay accompanied her, and soon all four were singing while up to various depths in the pond.

The ants go marching one-by-one, the little one stopped to suck his thumb, and they all go marching down...to the ground...to get out of the rain, boom, boom boom...

Eww, ick – I wish I had on some water shoes or something. The feeling between my toes is just gross. I much prefer ponds with cement bottoms,” she quipped.

Party pooper,” Clay jokingly replied.

Yeah, party pooper!” Jamie happily repeated.

Josie laughed and squealed, “It's all yucky squishy between the toes!”

Evelyn looked at Clay and smiled. “Okay, does everyone know this song?”

Just what makes that little old ant

think he can move that rubber tree plant?

Anyone knows an ant can't move a rubber tree plant

Clay rolled his eyes and smiled at Evelyn, and they all sang the chorus.

But he's got HIGH hopes, he's got HIGH hopes

He's got high apple pie in the SKY hopes.

So anytime you're getting' low,

'stead of lettin' go,

just remember that ant –

OOPS, there goes another rubber tree –

OOPS, there goes another rubber tree –

OOPS, there goes another rubber tree plant!

They all laughed as they walked hand-in-hand out of the pond. The girls took their shoes and ran back up to Edina in the yard while Clay grabbed Evelyn's hand and walked her back into the pond.

What the heck you doing? Oh, God, ick – don't make me trudge back in this gunk.”

Clay held her at the waist and brought her close. “Thank you for my first baby step. I don't know how I'll feel tomorrow, but today, I'm standing up to my knees in a pond, and I'm not afraid, and I have God, Jamie and you to thank for it.”

Pride filled Ev's eyes to see Clay so happy. They were kissing before she could say “you're welcome.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Okay, girl, you're done for the night,” Clay said as he locked the kitchen door. Evelyn was already relaxed on the couch, watching tv as he went into the living room. He yawned as he sat down on the other side of the couch. “Oh, goodness, I'm more tired than I thought!”

Ev also yawned. “Now stop that! You've got me doing it, now.”

Clay snickered. “It's been a pretty long day. I guess you're feeling better now?”

Huh?” Evelyn replied through another yawn.

The dream. Looks like you shook off those weird feelings from this morning. I knew the picnic would help.” Ev smiled. “Yeah, I guess I did.” Although I do still need to finish writing all that down. There's no way I'll let myself forget it.

So what are we watching?”

Well, I'm flipping – I saw Seinfeld on.”

Neat, I love Seinfeld.”

Yeah, but are you Master of Your Domain?”

Clay giggled. “I'm Lord of the Manor!”

Evelyn laughed. “And I'm Queen of the Castle!”

Yes, you are!”

They settled back and watched the episode.

Hours later, Evelyn heard the rather loud sound of an audience cheering and woke up. She reached for the remote and muted the tv. Another damn cooking infomercial with the fake audience. Do they think they're fooling anybody? She looked up at the clock on the wall. Cripes, it's after 2:00. She stretched her legs and accidentally bumped her foot into Clay's leg, which woke him with a mild startle. “Oop, sorry,” she whispered to him. He just mumbled in reply as he twisted and hugged his lanky body back into a comfortable sleeping position. She remembered how attentive he had been, and how wonderful his kisses felt – a little wave of courage washed over her.

Clay, why don't you come over here.”

Still sleepy, he wondered if he heard her right and lifted his head toward her. “What?”

Why don't you come over here to sleep.”

He smiled. “That's what I thought you said.”

I'm a little cold over here. A little body heat would help.”

Better be careful what you ask for, Ev. It may be more than you expect. He responded to her offer with a smug little grin.

Well, how warm do you want to be?”

Her eyes widened and she was left speechless, not expecting him to be so overt. Would he really if I told him?

He sat up a bit more. “Okay, I guess that answered my question. Warm is good. I could use some warmth, too.” He patted his side of the couch. “But, how about you come over here?”

She smiled, a bit relieved, and kept it playful. “Well, I don't think Raleigh would like not being right by you. At least if you come over here, you can still hold her. We'll all be warm.”

A little female companionship in the dead of night? She doesn't have to twist my arm.

Well...you make a good point.” He smiled and shuffled himself over to her. A big grin came over her face, then she adjusted herself, moving her legs to accommodate his frame, then laid a small pillow on her chest. As he stretched out on her, he took the afghan off the back of the couch and draped it over both of them. They both snuggled up, fine-tuning their positions for maximum comfort and warmth. He let out a sigh and rested his head on the pillow.

You comfortable?” he asked in a whisper. “I'm not too heavy, am I?”

No, you're fine. Where's The Princess?”

Clay lifted his head again, looked toward the floor and snapped his fingers. “Raleigh Girl, come'ere sweetie. Come on up, girl.” The little dog jumped up on the couch and settled between his feet. He gave her chin a little scritch, then once again settled his head on the pillow as he brought the afghan up to his neck.

She reached for the remote control and turned off the tv, which threw the room into darkness, save for the dim light cast by the small stained-glass lamp across the way. Clay lifted the afghan up for Evelyn's arm, then snugly tucked in the ends once her arm was back in place. She settled her left arm on the afghan over Clay's chest, then planted a kiss into his mussed hair. He craned his neck around to her, then she to him, and they gave each other three gentle kisses.

You're beautiful in this light, Ev,” he whispered. He reached out for one more taste of her lips.

Who needs Heaven, when I've got this. “You make me feel beautiful.”

He smiled. “Goodnight, Ev.”

Goodnight, Clay.”

He felt her right hand also come to rest against his chest, and her gentle embrace comforted him. He laid his left hand upon her right, and in their cozy bundle, they drifted into blissful slumber.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

As dim light glowed from the windows, Clay heard the familiar little whine of Raleigh needing to go outside. He lifted his head up to see his little companion staring from the other end of the couch.

Outside, sweetie?” he whispered. She wagged her tail and moved around in excitement, and he quietly tried to shush her so Ev wouldn't wake up. He noticed that somehow in the night, they both moved around to where she was now spooned tight behind him, with her arm wrapped around his torso, her hand over his heart. He lay his head back down on the pillow and savored the warm, cozy position they were in and didn't want to get up. A few minutes later, Raleigh's little whine grew louder and he sighed. You owe me SO BIG for this one, princess.

He gently lifted back the afghan and slowly pulled himself horizonally off the couch, trying hard not to wake her. Evelyn stirred a bit but didn't wake as he tucked the afghan back around her. He picked up Raleigh with one arm while he ran his long fingers through his bedhead, and yawned as he shuffled to the kitchen door. Quietly, he unlocked and opened the door and took her into the yard. As she sniffed around the wet grass, he sat sleepily on the back porch step and looked out at the misty property, and looked forward to slipping back into his cozy position with Ev.

Morning,” he heard. Off to the right, he saw Mark approach.

Morning Mark. You always up this early?”

Yeah, pretty much. It's the little bit of peace I get every day before the family wakes up.”

Oh, but I'm sure you wouldn't have it any other way.”

No...I guess not.” He sat down on the step next to him. “I love my family. I just wish the in-laws lived on the other side of town sometimes. Heck, other side of the state would be good, too.”

Clay giggled a bit, then they sat silently as they watched Raleigh.

The picnic was great. Thanks for going through all the trouble.”

Oh, no problem at all. It sure was a lot of fun. Have to do that more often. And you know – even with all the fancy restaurants in the world, there's no food better than just a plain old American barbeque.”

Yeah, I'd have to agree with that. Emeril's got nothing on you, Mark. I feel a little bad that I couldn't eat the Chinese cole slaw, though – I hope I didn't put off Marta. I've got this weird thing about wanting to breathe. When it comes down to it, almonds are poison to me.”

Oh, don't worry about it. It'll all get eaten, believe me. I'll throw her a bone today and tell her how good it is. The girls love it, too, so I'll make sure they tell Grandma again.”

They were quiet again for a few moments. Clay remembered how much he enjoyed interacting with the girls. “Josie and Jamie are great kids.”

Yeah, they are. My two little angels, growing like weeds. Soon, I'm gonna need to buy me a shotgun to keep the boys away. I'm old enough now that I wouldn't give a nickel for another one, but I wouldn't trade them for all the money in the world. And, well, even though they get on my nerves, I'm glad Edina's parents are here so the girls can be with their grandparents.”

Clay chuckled a bit. “Yeah, I hope one day I get the same thing.”

What, In-laws?”

Clay laughed. “No, kids! At least a couple of them.”

Well, Clay – you don't exactly get in that position with all of yesterday's clothes still on 'ya, bud.”

What? Oh, goodness,” he snickered as he looked at his rumpled attire. “Evelyn and I fell asleep on the couch watching tv.”

That's not exactly how babies get made, Clay.”

His jaw dropped. “God, Mark! Subtle much?”

I'm just sayin'...”

I don't just go around doing that. At least, not until...well... And Ev and I, we...we're...we're...friends.”

Well, that's good to hear. Everyone needs friends. She's always been a great friend to me. She always seems to know just when I need to escape from here and let off some steam.” He paused as he looked out over his property. “Anyway...actually, I'm just giving you a hard time, Clay. I know Evie doesn't want kids anyway.”

His heart suddenly sank. “Oh, really?”

Nope. Husband yes; kids no. Not that she thinks she'd be a bad mom, she just doesn't want any. I still remember her telling us that before Matt ever proposed, she told him flat out: 'If you really want children, don't marry me.'”

Clay was stunned, but tried to keep it under wraps. “Wow...that's quite a thing to say to someone.”

Yeah, she's wierdly considerate that way. But, Matt wanted to be with her more than he wanted kids, I guess, because well, they got married and they didn't have any.”

And she still feels the same way?”

Far as I know, yeah. Now that I'm thinking of it, you guys by the pond yesterday was the most interaction I've seen Evie have with the girls in a long while.” Mark raised himself to standing. “Well Clay, I guess I'll let you get back inside. I think she's all cleaned out now.”

Yeah, she's done. You ready to go back inside, girl?” Raleigh trotted back over to him. “See you later, Mark. Hope the in-laws go easy on you today.”

Thanks, but if you see me high-tailing it over to the garage, you'll know it didn't work. Feel free to visit. Take it easy.”

Clay walked back into the kitchen and closed the door. He forgot to pick up Raleigh and her nails clicked across the floor. He quietly pulled out a chair and sat at the kitchen table while a barrage of thoughts spun through his head:

How can someone not want children? I just don't understand that – children are beautiful and fun and amazing – they're a part of you – they're miracles – how can anyone not want that in their life? Maybe her maternal instinct or biological clock or whatever just hasn't kicked in yet. But, I would think by now it would have – and she WAS married for over 10 years. Maybe she has a medical condition that she didn't tell anyone. Maybe they didn't have the money to do in vitro or to adopt. Maybe Matt really wasn't “the one,” and for someone else – the “right” someone else – she WOULD want to have his children. I saw the look in her eyes on the plane when I asked her to sing – she would've done ANYTHING for me at that moment. But then again, singing a song isn't exactly on the same level as bearing and raising your children.

Clay's train of thought was broken when he thought he heard “Phone.” He looked over at Evelyn, still asleep on the couch, and wondered if it was his imagination. “Phone rang, hun,” she said, even though she still looked asleep.

My cellphone rang, Ev?”

Yeah.”

Uh oh. God, I hope it's just Mom saying hi. He walked into his bedroom to his cellphone, still attached to the charger cord. 2 MISSED CALLS, the screen read, and he also saw the little envelope icon that indicated a voicemail. Oh no. His dread was confirmed when he saw both calls were from Jerome and he immediately dialed.

C?” Jerome answered.

Yeah, J. Do I need to get out of Dodge?”

I have a feeling you'll have to cut it short, C. Your publicist just called and asked where you were. He got a call from one of the entertainment news shows. I told him what you said – that you were on vacation with friends for a few days. Nobody's mentioned Idaho yet, but my gut is telling me you need to come home.”

But nothing about Idaho. It sounds more like a slow news day, if anything.”

I suppose so, but I'm telling you, C, I've been in this business over 20 years, and you develop pretty good instincts about these things. I don't think you need to leave this very minute, but sometime today would be wise.”

I planned to leave late tomorrow – you don't think I even have that much time?”

Jerome sighed. “You might be okay if you leave tomorrow, but it's my opinion that if you don't want to pique the curiosity of press to find out WHERE you're vacationing, you need to wrap it up soon and come on home. It's up to you, but I wouldn't be doing my job if I wasn't extra careful this time around. Sometimes, it's my job to protect you from even yourself, C.”

Clay was pensive for a couple moments. “I understand. I'll...I'll say my goodbyes and head home today.”

I'm sorry, man. I'm just looking out for you.”

I know, J, and I appreciate it. Well, I knew I had to leave all along, but...”

I guess the trip's been a good one?”

It has. Maybe even a little too good.”

Well...I won't take up more of your time. If I hear anything else, I'll call you again.”

Okay. I'll call you from the road. Thanks, J.”

No problem. See you soon.”

He sat on the edge of the bed and looked around the cozy room that had become his over the last few days. God, I don't want to tell her...and God help me, I don't want to leave her or this place.

He took a couple deep breaths, then went back into the living room. From the coffeetable, he watched her sleep, all snuggled in the afghan. 20 minutes ago, all I wanted was to slip back on the couch with her. Nothing's changed. I came here to find out if she and I had a chance together, and thank Heaven above, at least here, she's shown me we do, and it's been more than wonderful. But this place – it's almost...like this cozy little bubble we've created for ourselves. The real world's gonna start when I roll out of the driveway.

He reached out to touch her cheek. “Ev?” he whispered. “Ev?” She arose with a start, which startled Clay. “What?!? What is it?”

Shh, shh, it's okay, Ev. I'm sorry, but I had to wake you. I...I've got some bad news.”

Her eyes turned sad from the tone in his voice and she just stared. “You have to leave, don't you?” He nodded yes. “Jerome thinks they're on my trail.”

She was quiet a moment, then sunk back into the couch. “Well...if Jerome thinks you need to go...he would know about these things. Do you...have to leave right away?”

No, I don't think so. It sounded like I had some time. I'll go sometime this afternoon. For now, Ev, I...just want to be with you..”

She stared at Clay, memorizing all his features. He again saw the gears turning behind her eyes, then saw tears.

Be brutally honest with me – I'm a big girl, I can take it. Do you...do you think this is the last day we'll ever see each other?”

Ev, I don't want it to be.”

She sighed and shook her head. “I don't, either, Clay, but realistically, is it? We're both realists. I'm here while you're everywhere else in the world EXCEPT here, meeting new people – more people than I can count – working on new, exciting projects, and I have to think that after a while, I'd just end up being 'that friend in Idaho.'”

NO,” he emphatically replied. “God, Ev, you mean so much more to me than that – haven't I already shown you that? It can work out if we both want it to. Sure, I could've tried harder to get your new number and just called you, but I didn't. There was more in my heart for you that wouldn't leave me alone – it practically THREW me in my car to see you, and all the way here, I hoped I'd find that same spark in you – something beyond friendship – and when I look in your eyes, I think it's there.”

She sat up. “Clay, what are you trying to tell me?”

I'm saying...that I think I'm in love with you, and I'm not willing to let you go. I want to see where this goes, despite the challenges.”

She stared, amazed. “Wow. I think you really mean all that.”

He took her hands. “Ev, I meant every word of it.. I know it's not going to be easy, and I know there are no guarantees for us, but for you, I'll try my damndest to make a go of a long-distance relationship.”

She looked down at their clasped hands and rubbed her thumbs against his. She felt a couple tears fall, then looked back up at Clay. “I believe you. I'm willing to make a go of this, too.”

Will you be my girl, Ev?”

She lifted from the couch to his lap and wrapped her arms tight around him. “I already am.”

Clay giggled with joy. “And I'm your guy.”

She sniffled and chuckled a little herself. “Lord help us both.”

Yes, Lord. Please be with us,” he whispered. “Ev, I won't lie to you – it won't be easy. I know there will be times when we may not be able to communicate at all for long periods of time, but please don't lose faith in me. Stay strong. I promise on a stack of bibles you'll always be in my heart, no matter where I am or what's going on around me.”

She lifted from him and looked into his loving eyes. “I believe you, Clay. I really do.” He smiled and touched her cheek once again. She saw a new sparkle in his eye – even stronger than what she saw on the porch swing. Her eyes never left his gaze as she sat back down on the couch. He brought himself next to her, close to her – their gaze never broke until the kiss. Clay grabbed at the afghan and pulled it around himself, then pulled at her waist and laid Evelyn down below him.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

What's up, J?”

Hey C. You on the road?”

Yeah, I just crossed into California a little bit ago. I still have about 10 hours of driving. Ev's been on the phone with me since I left, but she was falling asleep, so I told her to go to bed and call me when she wakes up.

I wanted to let you know that your publicist just called again and asked if I had heard from you. I told him that we chatted briefly – that you didn't tell me where you were, but I heard people speaking Spanish in the background. That little 'leak' seemed to satisfy him – I wish I had thought of that sooner.”

It's okay, J. You were right to advise me to leave. Obviously they weren't going to leave it alone if they called again.”

So...how did it go?”

Well, I have good news and bad news. Which one do you want first?”

Aww....give me the good news first.”

The good news is...Ev and I are together.”

God, C, that's great news, but – how is that going to work? Is she gonna move to L.A. or something?”

No – she'll be there and I'll be everywhere else. It's going to be long-distance.”

So, I guess that's the bad news. Are you sure about this, C?”

I can't give her up yet, J, and she's willing to wait for me. We don't have everything figured out, but we have enough faith in each other to try.”

Well then...I'll ask you the question again: Do you think she's the one, C?”

Well...I want her to be.”

But that doesn't answer the question.”

I know it doesn't...but for now, it's enough for me. That's what we're both still exploring.”

So, I guess that means you'll be keeping this on the down-low until you've...done all your exploring?”

Yeah. I would never want press showing up at her front door. When we're ready, we'll say something.”

Well, okay. You're two grown adults – you know what you're doing. In the meantime, I'll keep the crazy little ladies at bay. I got your back.”

He smiled. “It's not my back that I worry about when the crazy little ladies are around.” Jerome laughed. “J – thank you for everything this week. Remind me to give you a raise, dude.”

This one's on the house, my friend. Call me when you're back in town so I know you're okay.”

You got it, and I'll see you on the 14th.”

We'll get you at 10 o'clock.”

Sounds good. Bye, J.”

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Hello?”

We're home.”

Hi. I'm so glad you're safe. Go to sleep now.”

I will in a minute. I just want to hear your voice right now.”

That's so sweet. Oh, be sure to unpack your suitcase before you go to sleep.”

My suitcase?” He threw the suitcase on the bed and opened it, and found the afghan and an envelope.

Oh, honey, you didn't have to give me...”

I wanted to. I'll lay on the couch and remember...what happened.”

A wave flowed through him. He smiled as his mind wandered back to their encounter. “We really made a little magic, there, didn't we?”

Evelyn smiled. “Yeah, we did. It was wonderful. I can still feel myself wrapped in your arms. I wish we could've stopped time and never got up.”

I know. Me, too. You're so beautiful, Ev. You were so beautiful to look at and touch, and how you touched me. And what...bases...we didn't cover, we can look forward to when we're together again.”

Definitely. Have you...looked in the envelope yet?”

The envelope? Oh, yeah.” She heard him open it and unfold the note:

Clay, I have a thousand pictures of you. It seems only fair you should have one of me. Love, Ev

Yeah, you sure are beautiful, all right. Thanks, honey. Oh, I left you a little something, too.”

You did?”

Go to my allergy card on the fridge.”

Evelyn walked to the fridge and removed the card from the magnet. She turned it over and tears welled in her eyes.

My name is Clay Aiken, and I'm in love with Evelyn Whitcomb.

Oh, Clay, I...”

You're welcome, honey. It's a little promise you can always look at when we're not together.”

Thanks Sweetie. Thanks. Well...I guess I'd better let you get some sleep now. Sweet dreams.”

'Night, Ev. I love you.”

I love you, too. Bye.”

He looked at her smiling picture and rubbed his thumb across her cheek as he remembered the feel of their bodies tight together on the couch. He took the afghan downstairs and fell asleep on his sofa.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

On a clear, cool late September evening, the phone rang. Ev walked inside to answer it.

Hello?”

A gentleman replied. “Hello, is this Evelyn?”

Yes, it is,” she said with a lilt in her voice. Why does his voice sound familiar?

Evelyn, this is Ryan Seacrest. I was just speaking with Clay Aiken about the business you run?” She then heard a commotion in the background and two male voices discussed something. Actually, it sounded like they were arguing...something about discretion and privacy? Another male voice finally came on the phone.

Hello, Evelyn? Hold on, it's noisy here – let me close the door.” He directed his voice elsewhere – “I'll be right with 'ya, just let me talk to her a minute.” She heard a door shut in the background. She knew his tender tone anywhere – the beautidul voice she hadn't heard in nearly 10 days.

Hi, honey.”

How are you, sweetie.”

I'm doing fine. Edina stopped by for a few minutes about half an hour ago to chat. I've just been sitting on the porch swing listening to the crickets. It's nice out tonight.”

Clay paused. “I'm sorry that it's been a while. It's so good to hear your voice.”

Don't start cryin', girl. “It's good to hear yours, too. Email is great, but it's just not the same.”

You're right. I'll try better to call you, if only for a couple minutes. You haven't been calling me – I know most of the time I can't answer, but please don't stop calling. It makes me happy to just see your name pop up on my screen.”

Well, that one time I felt bad leaving you such a long message and all I did was ramble.”

Honey, I love your voicemails, especially when they ramble. Those are the ones that make me feel closest to you, because I know it's all from your heart. I save them all.”

She sniffled a bit then took a deep breath. “I told myself I wouldn't cry.”

He paused and closed his eyes. “I'm sorry, honey. I didn't want to get you all...what's the word...verklempt.”

Evelyn suddenly burst into laughter. “Oh, my God – you said 'verklempt.' Do you know how funny it is to hear that word come from that sweet North Carolina mouth of yours?”

Clay smiled. “I'm glad that made you laugh. Anyway...obviously there's a reason for my call. Remember you told me on the plane you wished you could be the proprietor of an ultra super-inclusive bed and breakfast, where gullible stars paid you $10,000 a week just to stay in your house and eat your food away from Hollywood and the paparazzi?

She chuckled. “Yeah, yeah I remember. Only rich, famous men. Women would expect too much.”

Right, and you'd only need to work three or four weeks out of the year, then you could write, travel and grow your pumpkins the rest of the time?”

Yup. My little pipe dream.”

Well, guess what. I have your first gullible star.”

Her chin dropped to the floor. “You mean Ryan?!?”

Yup. Actually, except for the big ego, it'll be like I never left.”

No, I don't think so, but maybe it would...help.”

Ryan yelled from the other side of the door. “Hey Aiken, gimme the phone back or I'm gonna tell your mother!”

How can you – I HAVE your phone!” Clay yelled back, giggling. “Hang on one more minute!”

He got back to her. “Sorry about that, Ev. So, what do you say?”

Well, why not? A week alone with Ryan can't be all that bad.”

I think you'd earn that ten grand if you spent a week with Ryan, but I know it'll be fine. Okay, well hold on, let me get him in here.”

Clay, wait.”

Yeah, honey?”

I miss you so much.”

He paused. “I miss you, too, Ev – all the time. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you. Please keep having faith, sweetie. I promise we'll be together again.”

A few tears welled up in her eyes again. “I will, Clay.” She took a deep breath. “Well...okay, let's get Ryan on the phone.”

That's my girl. I'll go get him.”

She heard the door open and the two of them talking, then the door shut. Clay gave Ryan the phone.

Hello?”

You're on, girl! “Hello Ryan. I understand you're looking to get away?”

Yes, ma'am, and I understand from Mr. Aiken that you have just the place for some peace and quiet.”

That I have. Did he tell you my fee?”

Yes, he did, and that's acceptable.”

Cripes! Okay, I'll hit him with the big guns. “Did he mention the confidentiality clause yet?”

No, ma'am, he hasn't.”

Clay leaned over to Ryan – Ev heard his whisper through the phone. “Stop calling her ma'am.”

Ryan leaned away from the phone. “What, Clay?”

Stop calling her ma'am...she hates that. You want to get in there, don'tcha? I'm trying to help you out! Just call her Evelyn.”

Nice touch, Sweetie.

I'm sorry – Evelyn – you said something about a confidentiality clause?”

Yes. As Mr. Aiken may have told you, I'm known by my guests as “The Best Place No One Knows About,” and in order to keep my establishment that way, my guests must make all efforts to not reveal their whereabouts, or my whereabouts, so that the press does not discover this place. Once discovered, I would have to close my establishment, and thus cut off my livelihood. I require my guests to sign an agreement which exacts a fine of...oh, what the hell...$500,000...should they be discovered here by the press during their stay. Is this acceptable to you?”

Five hundred thousand?!?” Ryan thought for a moment. “Yes, that's fine. I want to be Greta Garbo as much as you do. Do you need a fax number so you can send that agreement to me?”

Keep pushing the envelope, girl! “No, I will need to send it to your home address via Fedex. You can send the signed agreement...and a check from your personal account, signed by you, for the full amount of your stay in the return envelope.”

Ryan leaned and whispered to Clay. “Dude, she really means business! I think this is going to be just what I need.”

Told you. Believe me, when you get there, you'll never want to leave.”
