Vitali Klitschki vs. Corrie Sanders

04/26/04-  Finally, heavyweight boxing is starting to show some signs of a comeback. Don't get me wrong, non-heavy weight fights can be truly great. In fact, they consistently have more action, more contenders, and better matched fights. But c'mon, watching a couple of giants slug it out for the chance of being the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World is as exciting as it gets.

That fight between Corrie Sanders and Vitali Klitschko was a good fight. Not necessarily because of style or technique, not even because this fight would settle the question as to who is seen as the true Heavyweight Champ, but because there was constant action, they both got some good blows in, a rivalry had developed in the short time since Sander's fight with the young Wladimir, a title was up for grabs, and really because these guys had it out and showed some real heart. By no means am I saying that they are the greatest fighters, or even good boxers, heck, Sanders was viewed as a journeyman not too long ago, then he suddenly became the hero of journeymen after defeating Wladimir. The hype behind the fight, the "Hey no one kicks my little brother's butt and gets away with it" attitude was just what this fight needed to make it interesting. Let's face it, usually two relatively unknown white guys that are not American do not receive this much attention. Heck, I may have even paid for this fight if it was on Pay-Per-View, instead they make fights like Oquendo & Ruiz, Golota & Byrd a Pay-Per-View fight, which makes me wonder how much faith Boxing's movers and shakers have in this division. I was so not interested in those fights that I didn't even look up who won, someone at work had to tell me in order for me to say "huh!" a draw and a questionable win, how could I miss that! (yeah right!) I think the Heavyweight division is going to slowly but surely make its way back into homes across  America. The best fights seem to be  those when non boxing fans get interested and start ordering fights and there is that all too familiar buzz about boxing around the old water cooler. That day will comeagain! But when? I wish we could fire boxers and ban them from ever participating in the sport again, much less as some second rate commentator. Lets get Ruiz out of there, to me he is as exciting as watching paint dry. Please tell me Holyfield has truly retired, let the man deal with all his alimony and child support issues. WHY IS GOLOTA BACK? who asked him to come back? I surely didn not! And if you want to see Old George Foreman come back, let him have a fight with three midget ninjas all armed with mufflers. Now that would be entertainment! Here is my message to Boxing: Stop looking into the past for a champion, lets look into the future and at the current boxers that are out there. How about V. Kitschko and Byrd again? Lets settle this questionable fight. How about a Brewster and a Wladimir rematch. The only reason I suggest this is to prove once and for all whether or not the younger Klitschko should hang up his gloves. Where is Tua? How about something crazy like Tua and Tyson, why not? Sounds more exciting than some of this crap they have been putting together for us. They both are physically similiar, they both are still eager to relive much missed fame, they both are looking for that one punch knockout. Hey I know I said lets not look into the past but c'mon, at least entertain me! Anyways, thats all for now. I'll see you ringside.
