Remember 2 years ago? All that AZ Alkmaar needed to do to become Dutch football champion was to win from the no. 17 of the league... Need I say more? Well... they didn't win... Followed by a dramatic season in which they only reached the 11th place... Understandably, at the start of this season, our expectations were not that high. It would already be great if AZ could go for top-5 again. Even the whole club management thought that way. After two losses in the first two games, we all thought 'oh no, not another crappy season like last year...' But then, the champon of the last 4 years PSV was beaten and slowly but surely all began to change.
Last weekend, AZ Alkmaar could already claim the title if they would at least reach a draw against Vitesse Arnhem. We were all ready for a big party, but... they lost! Incredible, staying unbeaten for no less than 28 games in a row and then losing that ultimate match! Bad memories of 2007 returned, they couldn't repeat that mistake...or could they? Only one day later, the party could begin after all!!! PSV was so friendly to defeat Ajax with 6-2, Feyenoord also was very helpful by beating Twente 1-0, and AZ Alkmaar was CHAMPION!!!!
The second title after 1981. I was already around in 1981 but unfortunately not that into football yet, so I have no memories of that title. Two more parties to go: the offical celebration in the city tomorrow, and finally the handing over of the championship shield in thel ast home game on May 10th. No matter how they will play the last 3 games, they could even lose them all, history has been written in Alkmaar with this second title. Congratulations to all those that made this happen, and... let's party!
