NEO-ASSYRIAN GLOSSARY
Based on "State Archives of Assyria"
Version 2003.1 Compiled by Marco De Odorico (marcodeo-at-inwind.it). This list is rather obsolete, as I compiled it for personal use between 1994 and 1999. It does not claim to be exhaustive.
This file includes a list of Assyrian words with English translation, obtained from volumes 1-7 and 9 of "State Archives of Assyria", a collection of neo-assyrian texts published in Helsinki between 1987 and 1995.
My NewRoman TR font must be installed in your system to correctly read Assyrian words and transliterations.
Each entry includes: SAA volume where the term appears, with all = every volume (cf. list of included volumes below). A number followed by : means that everything follows (until another such number appears) refers to the indicated SAA volume, for example (within english translations):
1,2,4,5: left, 1: north, 2,5: south means left (in SAA 1,2,4 and 5), north (in SAA 1 only), south (in SAA 2 and 5 only)
Many Assyrian words are followed by their logograms (i.e. ideographical writings), by some grammatical indications (Gt, Dt, , etc.) and/or by diverging transcriptions. Indipendent entries are placed in parentheses, as in "epwcu (epfcu)" which means epwcu - glossary entry, see also epfcu (representing an indipendent entry). On the contrary, epwcu, epfcu would mean that epfcu is not indipendently listed in SAAs glossaries, which simply report "epfcu, cfr. epwcu" or sim. however, it is advisable to check whether the other entry exist. "s." stands for see and sends to another lemma.
The list does not include names of text series, like enoma anu illil, and incomplete terms.
Logograms, for reasons of space, have been "compacted": parenthesis indicates signs which are not always present and a comma indicates one or more alternating signs, some examples:
AN.TA-,UGU-nu means AN.TA-nu and UGU-nu
DIB.DIB,.MEC means DIB.DIB and DIB.MEC
(4: KUC.)MURUB4 means MURUB4, KUC.MURUB4 (in SAA 4 only)
ITI.GUD(4:.SI.SÁ) means ITI.GUD and ITI.GUD.SI.SÁ (in SAA 4 only)
bft rfdoti, (KUC.)É-r.,-UC(.CÁ) means KUC.É-r.[=rfdoti], É-r., KUC.É-UC, É-UC, KUC.É-UC.CÁ, É-UC.CÁ
Some pseudo-logograms have been ignored, as in the case of LU2.MAC-cu (for lumwcu).
Please note that phonetic determinatives are indicated, in a simplified form, only if always present, thus LU2-tu [amflotu] stands for LU2-ti, LU2-ú-ti, etc.
Frequence of each logograms is not indicated in any manner. Each logogram, therefore, might be employed either once or always. As a general rule, the most common logograms are listed before the rarest ones. The plural sign MEC is omitted, except when it always follows the logogram.
English translations which follow have been taken exclusively from SAA. Later translations are placed first: in this way SAA 5 precedes SAA 1, etc. The sole exception is SAA 4 whose translations are usually placed last. Older translations, if followed by a ? in SAAs glossaries, have been ignored if later traslations - credited as certain - are available (or, the question mark is ignored if the translation is confirmed in a later volume). If the translations are synonyms, I do not indicate which translation appears in each SAA volume, only diverging translations are preceded by the indication of the SAA volume. Every translation is listed in the exact form it appears in SAAs glossaries, with the exception of the translated month names (Adar, Marchesvan, etc.) and of a small number of simplifications, such as mule stable attendant, attendant of mule stable (the latter is omitted).
Included volumes:
1 (SAA 1) Simo Parpola, The Correspondence of Sargon II: Part I, Helsinki 1987.
2 (SAA 2) Simo Parpola and Kazuko Watanabe, Neo-Assyrian Treaties and Loyalty Oaths, Helsinki 1988.
3 (SAA 3) Alasdair Livingstone, Court Poetry and Literary Miscellanea, Helsinki 1989.
4 (SAA 4) Ivan Starr, Queries to the Sungod, Helsinki 1990.
5 (SAA 5) Giovanni B. Lanfranchi and Simo Parpola, The Correspondence of Sargon II: Part II, Helsinki 1990.
6 (SAA 6) Theodore Kwasman and Simo Parpola, Legal Transactions of the Royal Court of Nineveh, Part I, Helsinki 1991.
7 (SAA 7) F. M. Fales and J. N. Postgate, Imperial Administrative Records, Part I, Helsinki 1992.
9 (SAA 9) Simo Parpola, Assyrian Prophecies, Helsinki 1995.
