Information Architecture
The discipline of information architecture involves the gathering
of information that will be used for the designing and development
of a web site. This is the first stage of the site development
and is the foundation to good design practices The Information
Architect, by gathering this information, is then able to accurately
evaluate the site requirements and can provide clearly defined
guidelines for the navigation and structure of the site.
Value of Information Architecture
The benefit of information architecture is that it enhances the
development process and gives a clear and logical framework for
the construction of the web site. It enables a more accurate assessment
of the cost of developing the site. It gives a strong foundation
for setting up clearly defined goals and establishing sound development
practices. It encourages good project management and more accurate
time management by the web designer thus resulting in less time
wasted on unnecessary issues
Goals and purpose of Information Architecture
The details necessary for the information architecture is obtained
from ;
Client interviews which will provide insight into what the client
is wanting from site
Competitive analysis to evaluate how the opposition present their
site information
Analysis of the business needs for that particular business
Determine the Operating system needs and search engine needs
Conduct end user analysis to determine what they want from site.
With these details the information architect is able to more
accurately determine the requirements and goals of the web site
and can prepare a well planned and organised layout and navigation
structure. This assists the web designer during the development
stage by giving clear guidelines for them to follow and reduces
the possibility of forgotten features which if realised at a an
advanced stage of development may require major redesigning of
site. There is also the advantage of not wasting time on unnecessary
components or features.
