Web site : www.oocities.org/marcus_2300
Strategy
The sites URL will be listed with the main search engines i.e. Google,
Yahoo, Altavista, Looksmart, Web wombat etc. Use suitable and relevant
page titles and use 15 to 20 suitably selected key words that would
target the defined users and would target word tracking software . There
will be some consideration to using "pay on click" for a keyword
to assist in getting the site ranked by the search engines. Use forums
to spread the word. Use links and banner exchange advertising with higher
ranking sites.
The way to determine if the site has been ranked by the search engines
is by the use of predetermined key words. The search results of these
key words in assessed prior to submission These keywords are selected
on the basis that they are unique and give only a few results. This
makes it simple to determine when the search engine has listed the site
by listing the site in the search engine results.
The unique keywords used for my site assessment were; - Mac,trainee, designer, tweed
This combination originally gave a result of 12 sites
A second combination of key words - trainee, designer,
tweed gave a result of 117 sites listed.
Once the site is ranked and listed by the search engine these keywords
will assist in determining how future site enhancements can change and
hopefully improve the ranking of the site.
If the site does not promptly achieve search engine listing it is possible
to purchase the use of a" key word" for search result rankings.
This will have an estimated cost of around 50c per click with a value
limit of say $300. By doing this the site would be listed by the search
engines when this word is requested in a search. This strategy may elevate
the exposure of the site sufficiently to initiate the search engine
listing.
This site was submitted to Google in August for listing on the search
engine. By the end of October the site had not been ranked or found.
At the same time several other students also submitted their sites for
listing. It would seem that the only ones that have had any success
in being listed are those that used other processes to enhance their
chances of being listed.
It is evident that the simple process of submitting your site for listing
is not adequate. The two sites that achieved a listing may have benefited
by the use of links to higher ranking sites and also by submitting site
details to popular forums
As of 5th November the use of these key words in the Google search
engine did not list my site.
On the 6th November Google displayed the web site by its
web site name. At this point it has not ranked the site by using the
key words. It is likely that this site has benefited by other student
sites that have been found by the search engine through the links to
their sites
Site goal : The goal of this site is to list our
work for class assessment and to familiarize ourselves with the various
strategies and techniques required for loading up a web site and achieving
a ranking on the search engines. The site offers myself and fellow students
an avenue for sharing assignment information.
The following guidelines will assist the search engines to find, index,
and rank the web site.
Design and Content Guidelines
1. Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links
2. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link
3. Offer a site map to users with links that point to the important
parts of the site.
4. Create a useful, information-rich site and write pages that clearly
and accurately describe the content.
5. Consider the words users would type to find the web pages and include
these words within the site.
6. Use mainly text and keep images to a minimum on the index page.
7. Ensure that TITLE and ALT tags are descriptive and accurate.
8. Check for broken links and correct HTML.
9. The search engine spider do not crawl dynamic pages as well as static
pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them
small.
10. Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number (fewer than
100).
Search Engines
Consideration needs to be given to the different strategies used by
search engines to evaluate sites.
Directory Listings : Human edited - e.g. Yahoo, MSN. - Only
indexes 1st page - Only show title & description.
Spiders : Program based - e.g. google search engine - Indexes
every page & follows every link - Shows first found content as well
- Indexes every word on page.
There needs to be an understanding that each search engine may require
a different approach when submitting the web site for listing The human
based review will be considerably different to the spider program based
review.
When designing for search engines
Do |
Don't |
Include meta tags listing keywords and description
|
Use layers unless absolutely necessary |
Write effective titles and include matching keywords
|
Use splash page for Flash intro without backlinking
or plain text content |
Write keyword rich copy for content, and keep each
page content to 250-300 words |
Use keywords more than 10% of total content |
Use keywords up to 8% of total content |
Exclusively use Flash navigation (can't be indexed) |
Include Alt tags |
|
Include robot.txt |
|
Heading tags |
|
Link text |
|
Clean code |
|
Validate code (eg w3.org validator) |
|
Use external JavaScripts |
|
Quality Guidelines;
" Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
" Don't employ cloaking or sneaky redirects.
" Don't send automated queries to Google.
" Don't load pages with irrelevant words.
" Don't create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially
duplicate content.
" Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines,
or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs
with little or no original content.
Other considerations;
The use of site statistics will assist in evaluating the sites performance
and determine what pages are being viewed more often. The statistics
will also track where clients are accessing the site and their path
through the site. They will also identify what brouser they are using
and their resolutions. These are all important considerations when updating
the site .
Review of site statistics as supplied by geocities
Since the sites uploading to geocities in August the site pages have
had 880 visits with index page receiving 296 visits. The biggest visitor
hits for this page occurred in September when the page received 100
visits. The tafetimes page has received a total of 182 visits, September
for this page was also the most popular month with 82 visits. These
two pages were the two most popular pages on this site.
For the full period of statistics the most popular days for visiting
the site were Tuesdays and Fridays which suggests fellow students are
the main users of this site as this corresponds with subject classes.
The most popular brouser was MSIE6 which was used by 82% of all users
Almost all users were using 1024x768 screen resolution
To receive statistics for Search Engines and Keywords reports, the
page must first be indexed by a search engine. At this time no data
is recorded for this statistic
Windows NT with 92% was the most popular operating system
followed by Windows 98 at 8% (I use windows 98 at home so these are
most likely my entries from home)
Referring URL's most of the visits to this site entered
through the oocities.com/marcus_2300 to index
Other statistics that can be helpful in improving the
site are the error reports which can identify areas that require attention
Based upon these statistics the site and its development
should cater to windows operating systems with users who are using a
high resolution monitor. Indications are that most visitors are entering
the site from geocities web site or related links
At this time the use of this site is limited to fellow
students and teachers so the statistics may not give a fair indication
of what might really happen when the site is found and listed by the
search engines. I personally would not put much emphasis on these statistics
until there is a broader use of this site
