Ensure Usability module 3755R

Usability

Site usability is an evaluation process that assesses how easy the user interface is to use and the ease of navigation through the site. It is a process that assists in improving the ease of use of the site during the development process. There are five components that are assessed during the evaluation process
Learn ability- how easy is it for the users to accomplish basic tasks
Efficiency – once learners have performed tasks
Memorability - when users return after a period of time how easy to return
Errors – how many errors do users make and how severe are errors.
Satisfaction – how pleasant is the experience

Usability Evaluation

The usability of a site is best evaluated by getting 3 to 5 users to use the site. They will be first time users of this site. They will be given a specific task to perform and evaluated on their reactions and actions whilst navigating the site The observer does not make any more comments to the user and does not provide any more assistance. The observer will document how successful the user performs the task, the difficulties encountered , errors and time taken for the evaluation.

Usability Benefits

The benefits of conducting a usability test is that it will identify areas that need attention and that can be rectified during the development stage. From the assessment it will become evident if there are areas that are difficult to navigate or are causing errors. By identifying these problem areas the web designer is able to rectify these problems which will result in the site being more user friendly as a result of this evaluation.
