The Trans Africa Truck Gallery #4

At the border waiting for the convoy

Sand Matting across the the red sands of the Sahara.

We followed some of the main routes used to cross the desert which did cause some trouble as the smaller 4 x 4 jeeps broke up the sand as they went and made our passage more difficult

At the bottom of the national park that form the western side of the Sahara, we came to a fishing village, in 1975 2 whales where washed ashore and the whole town was fed for a week.

Then then we hit the Mud

The water you see would have flooded the truck at high tide so we had to build a coffer dam to stop the water from filling our excavations.  as if by pure luck the Overland truck from economic expeditions arrived in the Fishing village about 2 hours after we got stuck, they stayed for an extra night and some of the passengers helped build our defences from the rising water.

The next day we had a recovery truck arrive to help tow us out from our watery position.

Our work removing the mud and moving dry sand to get us out was almost 3 days effort and we moved over 50 cubic meters of sand and mud.. about 250 tons in total!!!

Once we were free we then drove about 70 kms along the beach down the coast to nuackchott.

We finally arrive at our camp, tired, muddy, with bruises and cuts but all or us are safe and well, shame about the truck it needs alot of work.
