Samuel Thomas
was born about 1774 in Virginia (probably Charlotte County). He died
around 1835 in Pickens County, South Carolina. He
appears to have migrated to Person County, North Carolina sometime
before 1794 (presumably with his father Thomas between 1785 and 1794).
His name first appears in Person County on a marriage bond which was
signed on November 29, 1805 indicating that he married Susannah Johns.
The bond was witnessed by James Fowler and the bondsman was John Womack.
Samuel Thomas appears in the U. S. Census in Person County in 1810 along
with his wife, Susannah and a male child under the age of 10.
Samuel Thomas and his family do not again appear in the official
records until March 7, 1823 when Samuel bought 250 acres on Doughty and
Martins Creeks in Pendleton District, South Carolina from Owin Moore for
$350.00. This land was bordered by the land of Joseph Doughty and
William Sanders. Owin Moore, William Sanders and William Hogan witnessed
the sale. The Samuel Thomas family did not rest long at this site. Samuel
sold this property to neighbor William Sanders on December 20, 1825
receiving $122.60. Samuel and Susannah Thomas arrived shortly on a 164
acre piece of property on nearby Coneross Creek. It is there that they
raised their family, lived, farmed, and died.
Samuel Thomas died in Pendleton District, South Carolina between 1830
and 1840. Susannah Thomas died in Pendleton District in 1857. Their
heirs sold the home farm to William A. Cox on August 17th of that year.
