Which religion is
correct?
R1+T=M R = Religion (any variant) Religion + Time = Mythology Unless you are omniscient, agnosticism is correct by default. Agnosticism is a theory about knowledge that concerns religion. It is not a belief (theism) nor is it a disbelief (atheism) but merely a suspension of belief. Most people confuse agnosticism with atheism. Atheism is just as foolishly dogmatic as theism because both these philosophies assert to know absolutes which can only be known with ultimate knowledge, which human beings, by definition, are incapable of. Agnosticism asserts that the absolute of god's existence cannot be known since god is defined by concepts that cannot be directly perceived nor experienced with empirical knowledge. God cannot be perceived, but god can, however, be reasoned to (rationality). The non-existence of god, can likewise be reasoned to however. So again, we're left with agnosticism. Marcus' theory: Since, as a practical matter, no human being walks around all day suspending belief in things that cannot be perceived (such as ghosts, fairies, god, unicorns, etc.) in the first place, agnostics that are hard empiricists are by default, practicing soft atheists. Not because they assume god doesn't exist, but because they assume that anything that cannot be experienced does not exist. You say you believe in god but are you in fact an agnostic? Some degree of agnosticism is evident in every theist who considers their god to be "unfathomable" or to "work in mysterious ways." This all reflects a fundamental lack of knowledge on the part of the believer with regards to the nature of what they claim to believe in. Nearly all sane and rational human beings are at least partially agnostic.
"I do not consider it an insult, but rather a compliment to be called an agnostic. I do not pretend to know where many ignorant men are sure -- that is all that agnosticism means." Clarence Darrow, Scopes trial, Dayton, Tennessee, July 13, 1925 "Religion is an illusion and it derives its strength from the fact that it falls in with our instinctual desires. Religion is comparable to a childhood neurosis." Sigmund Freud At least two thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity, idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religious or political idols." Aldous Huxley "Religious suffering is at one and the same time the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions. The criticism of religion is therefore in embryo the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo." Karl Marx "As to the gods, I have no means of knowing either that they exist or do not exist." Protagoras "Fear of things invisible is the natural seed of that which everyone in himself calleth religion." Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan "If God did not exist it would be necessary for us to invent Him." Voltaire
The 2nd painting (the one by Rembrandt) is one of my favorites. These paintings depict man at his ultimate stupidity. A man (Abraham) tries to kill his own son (Isaac) because he thinks god told him to. I call this attempted murder by reason of insanity. What is the lesson god is trying to teach us here? "Do what I say or else!"?
