"State of Grace" explores the humorous and touching memories of Hannah Rayburn, a 47-year-old journalist who reminisces about her childhood with her overprotective Jewish parents and the remarkable friendship she once shared with a soulful and spirited classmate named Grace McKee. The adult Hannah Rayburn is the off-screen narrator (voiced by Frances McDormand) who remembers coming of age in 1965 North Carolina.
Hannah embarks on a new adventure in her life when she and her family move from Illinois to North Carolina, where she is enrolled in an elite Catholic school. Hannah feels like a fish out of water until Grace, an intelligent, vivacious, and independent girl from a wealthy background enters her restricted life.
On the surface, Grace appears to have everything-- intelligence, a zest for life, and wealth. But underneath her confident exterior is a little girl longing for the attention and stability of a family. All of the money in the world can't buy Grace the attention the 12-year-old really needs from her mother, but she does find a sense of love and support in her newfound friendship with Hannah.
