King Constantine II followed his father King Paul I, who died on 6 March 1964.

There was a coupe d'état by Colonels from the Army at 21 april 1967. In december that year, the king and his family left Greece for Rome, after a he unsuccessfully tried to restory democracy.
A repblic was declared on 1 June 1973 by Papadopoulos, leader of the coup, which left the king officially without any land.
In December 1974 a Referendum on the monarchy was held, with the result that the King was not allowed to return to Greece to campaign.

Since then, the King has returned once to Greece to bury his mother, and once for a private holiday with his family. He still hopes one day he'll return.
