The Rank and Duties structure of VMF-214 is based upon the United States Marine Corps as it was during WW II, and for the most part as it remains today.

1. Commanding Officer (CO) - LtCol - Overall responsibility for the operation and conduct of VMF-214.

2. Executive Officer (XO) - Maj - Second in command of VMF-214 and supervises the squadron staff sections.  Additionally the XO is the Officer that acts as the coordinator for functions that require the CO's attention/action .

3. S-1 Officer (Admin/PersO) - 1stLt - The S-1 Officer coordinates and maintains the squadrons' administrative and personnel files.  This Officer is also responsible for the Squadron Historical Log.  The S-1 Officer will also perform those additional duties as may be directed by the CO or XO from time to time.

4. S-2 Officer (Intel Officer) - Capt - The S-2 Officer is responsible for the intelligence gathering effort of the squadron as directed by the CO, and will coordinate his efforts with the S-3 Officer during combat mission planning.  This officer will also perform those additional duties as may be directed by the CO from time to time.

5. S-3 Officer (OpsO/TrngO) - Maj - The S-3 Officer is responsible for the planning of all combat operations as directed by the CO.  The S-3 is also responsible for squadron training and qualification of all pilots.  The S-3 will also plan, organize, and publish the squadron weekly training schedule.  The weekly training schedule will be posted no later than 3 days prior to training.  The OpsO will provide the CO and XO an after action report (AAR) on all combat missions.  A training report will also be posted on the squadron message board within two days after squadron training for review by all hands.

6. S-4 Officer (LogO/Maint. Officer) - Capt - The S-4 Officer is responsible for maintaining updated CFS and CFS 2 files as they relate to the ability of VMF-214 to accomplish its mission in combat. This duty requires the S-4 to be competent in the repainting of squadron aircraft, construction of multiplayer missions, and staying abreast of the latest addons, downloads, patches and all other areas that impact on squadron readiness.

7. Division Leader(s) (DivLdr) - Capt- The Division Leader is responsible to the CO for the combat readiness of their division, and the conduct of their Marines.  The DivLdr may conduct training of their personnel beyond that scheduled by the OpsO, but will report all training highlights to the OpsO by email msg in the form of an after action report (AAR).

8. Section Leader (SecLdr) - 1stLt - The Section Leaders will assist the Division Leader with all functions of the operation and conduct of the Division, and act as the senior Section Leader will act as second in command of the Division.

9. Division & Section Wingman - 1stLt/2ndLt - These pilots will assist their respective leaders and follow all directions as may be given to them.  These Officers will maintain themselves in a combat ready status at all times.

10. 2nd Lt's will be reponsible for satisfactorily completing basic flight training, and attending all such required flight training as established by squadron orders, and under the supervision of the Squadron Training Officer (S-3), or his representative.

The above ranks are flexible due to our Wartime status and based on the squadrons' needs.  Promotions are not just given away but are earned by dedication and hard work.  See the section covering promotions for detailed information.

These duties are broard in scope and require attention to detail. Staff Officers are not limited to just the flying of a desk, but are expected to maintain their pilot flying status and training, as they are also combat pilots, and will be called upon in each and every combat mission!  Based upon manpower requirements and on-hand personnel assets the above 'S' shops may be assigned to Division personnel as an additional duty until such personnel are available to be assigned those duties as a primary assignment.
