Instruments Of Abuse
If an animal becomes unruly and untrainable force will be used. There are various methods a owner will use
including: beatings, starvation, and various instruments to force them to
behave and to show them who's boss. Circuses use wild animals who are by
nature unpredictable and dangerous. When animals rebel against a trainer's
physical dominance they sometimes pay with their lives.
The following information was taken from Peta's Website:
- Rope - is used especially for elephants born in breeding
compounds. They are prematurely removed from their mother for training.
Baby elephants are easier to train and are highly desirable. During the separation
process, calves are kept isolated and tied with ropes at the front and back
leg, causing burns, as they struggle against the restraints.
- Bullhooks - has a long handle and a sharp metal hook, which
is used to dislipine elephants. An elephant's skin is very sensitive to pain.
Trainers embed the hook into the soft tissue behind their ears and inside
their mouth, or their most tender spots under the chin and around their feet.
- Whips - is another painful method, which causes lingering intense pain. Spectators view this abuse during a performance.
- Electrical Shock - A jolt of electrical current, which causes intense pain.
- Sticks, Axe handles, Baseball bats, and Metal pipes - All of these weapons are used to beat and restrain wild animals.
- Firearms - This is used for rampaging animals, especially elephants, who have to be gunned down to stop them from doing any more damage.
- Muzzles - This is mainly used for bears to keep them subdued
and to discourage them from protecting themselves if they feel threatened.
Muzzles can interfere with vision and respiration.
