Two weeks later both of them just happened to be on night shift together, Kerry was looking a lot better because most of her bruising had healed. The parts that hadn't healed had been covered by makeup rather skillfully leaving the rest of the staff to joke about being surprised that she knew how to put any on. Amber walked into the ER trying to ignore the fact that Weaver was up at the front desk yelling at Carter, she stepped past Romano hoping that he wasn't going to say anything to her and headed into the lounge to hang up her jacket. Luka was sitting in the lounge taking an impromptu break considering the fact that the ER was nearly empty tonight.
"Hello there." Amber said in a cheery voice, she didn't feel very happy about being there but she wanted to make the best of a good thing. He nodded at her, he had always had his eye on her and he also seemed to be the one who was the most oblivious to the fact that she had her eye on Weaver. He had just returned from Africa a week ago so the whole incident between her and Kerry was unknown to him. She opened her locker humming a Japanese song that she had been listening to in her car as she hung up her jacket.
"Hey, Amber..." Luka started out slowly and she very quickly got the idea that he was going to try to ask her out. She pulled out her white coat and put it on before sitting down across from him and folding her hands on the table. She wouldn't say that she was a total lesbian because every once in a while a man came along that she actually felt like she could sleep with. There was something about Luka, maybe it was his voice or his tall dark and handsome look that made her feel like melting all the time, "If you aren't busy maybe we could get lunch sometime."
"Well I'm free for the next few months but how about on our next break we can go out for coffee together?" She replied wanting to forget this whole mess with Dr. Weaver and move on, it certainly wasn't in her intentions to hurt Kerry's feelings by dating another co worker.
"Sounds good." He smiled at her and then got up and left the room, she sighed happily. Never in her life did she expect a man as good looking as that to even talk to her on a personal level let alone actually have some coffee with her. She smiled and then got up from her chair as the door to the lounge opened only to reveal Weaver standing there, still wearing the diamond ring.
"Talk about poor taste..." Amber commented as she took a look at the very expensive piece of jewelry, she couldn't believe that Weaver actually had the nerve to wear it around her or even wear it at all for that matter, "What did you tell Sandy? That you took it from a cadaver?"
"It's really none of your business what I told Sandy." Weaver's voice was laced with attitude and she stepped more into the lounge, it was time for her break she was working a double shift and she needed coffee. Amber knew that Weaver had seen her go into the lounge and she wondered why the woman just didn't wait until she left before coming in there.
"You know I think I should meet this Sandy woman, I think it's my right." Amber stepped past Weaver and headed for the door trying so very hard to push her buttons. She could tell it was working when she saw Kerry's head snap to look in Amber's direction, her stare was icy cold.
"My god where did you get your manners?" Was the only thing that Weaver could think to respond with but little did she know that she had just set herself up for another insult. Amber smiled and then laughed to herself a little.
"Where did you get yours? On a farm in Africa?" She laughed and stepped out of the room leaving just enough time to hear Weaver growl with frustration. She went over to grab a chart so she could see her first patient when two paramedics with a woman wearing a jacket that bore the insignia of a local firefighting company came in. The woman was most definitely in labor and it took Amber a moment before she realized that the woman might possibly be Sandy.
"Hey!" One of the paramedics called out to her and she was almost overjoyed that she was the one who was about to work on this case. She couldn't wait to tell Sandy all about her past 12 months with the woman who was supposed to be her life partner, "She didn't want to come in but her water broke."
"I'm fine." Sandy snapped at one of the paramedics, she didn't even want to sit down in a wheelchair, Amber sort of smiled as she watched them coax her to a sitting position. She cried out in pain with another contraction and Amber walked down the hall next to her as the paramedic moved the wheelchair.
"So what's your name?" Amber asked knowing full well that it just had to be Sandy Lopez, she was loud and stubborn like Weaver, it seemed to her that they would make a terrible match but what did she know?
"Sandy Lopez..." She groaned putting her hand on her stomach, "I'm going to KILL HER FOR MAKING ME DO THIS!"
"Kill who for what?" Amber said as she wrote her name down on a chart trying to hide the fact that she wanted to smile.
"My girlfriend convinced me to do this..." She growled before grabbing Amber's arm they were waiting for the elevator so they could take her upstairs. There didn't seem to be any visible complications so a normal delivery room would be fine. It just seemed like Sandy was probably with the paramedics when she went into labor and they brought her into the emergency room. She was now squeezing Amber's hand very tight, to the point of actual pain, "You get Kerry Weaver...she's working tonight...and you tell her to get her ass upstairs!"
"Okay but you'll have to let go of my hand..." Amber winced and tried to pull away from the woman in labor. She could handle pain but she knew never to underestimate a woman who was in labor, Sandy didn't let go of her hand.
"You're the doctor right?"
"I'm A doctor." She tried to express that she was just a doctor not an obstetrician although she did know how to deliver a baby.
"Then you are coming with me until we get up there."
"But that's not..."
"Yeah it is cause I'm not letting go of your hand until I see Kerry." She shouted at Amber who just sighed, when the elevator doors opened Carter stepped out looking at Sandy and Amber like he couldn't be more confused.
"Carter will you get Weaver and tell her that her girlfriend is in labor." Amber was pulled onto the elevator with Sandy and the doors shut just as a very puzzled Carter was nodding his head. He couldn't understand why Amber would be with Sandy especially with what had happened two weeks ago but he then decided that it was probably one of those freak coincidences and he wouldn't question it.
It seemed like an eternity of Sandy squeezing her hand before Weaver finally made her way into the room. "What the hell are you doing here?" She snapped at Amber as Sandy finally let go of her death grip on Amber's hand. Amber didn’t have any intention of staying but the woman wouldn’t let go of her hand until Weaver got there so it technically wasn’t her problem.
“I’m leaving Dr. Weaver.” Amber replied in a cold tone shaking her hand to get the circulation back into it as she walked out of the door, “And since we are all here why don’t you tell Sandy your little secret.” She added before stepping out into the hall and closing the door behind her. She knew that by saying that she draw the curiosity out of Sandy enough that Weaver would have to tell her what was going on. She stepped across the hall from Sandy’s room and waited for a few minutes to see what kind of reaction there would be.
“YOU DID WHAT?!” She heard Sandy scream from inside the room, hell half the hallway heard that scream. She heard Weaver try to explain herself but it wasn’t doing much good because now Sandy was finding objects and throwing them in Weaver’s direction. Finally Weaver ducked out of the room, a glass vase hitting the door right behind her head seconds later. She glared at Amber but could she really blame her for doing something like that? What she had done was a lot more immoral and now she had nobody. Amber smiled at her smugly and then headed down the hall for the elevators leaving Dr. Weaver to question her actions over the past few months.
Once again it was a slow night in the ER but Weaver wasn’t working the night shift this time so Amber didn’t have to worry about any of those awkward silent moments. She hadn’t talked to Weaver in a week now and according to everyone else she was acting rather odd. Amber didn’t blame her, she had thrown her love life away and her world had come crashing down in a moment. Amber was sitting at the front desk doing her nails as she watched the people move by. Without warning a stretcher came crashing through the doors and since Amber seemed to be the only doctor around she stood up and rushed to the paramedics. She was sure they informed her as to what was happening but everything started to drown out once she realized that Weaver was the one on the stretcher. She had two bandages around her wrists which were quickly becoming soaked with blood and she wasn’t responding to anything. Amber almost fainted and she looked around desperately for some one else to help her because she certainly didn’t think she could do this alone or even at all. Seeing the absolutely terrified look on Amber’s face Carter rushed over and then realized that it was Weaver and she had slit her wrists.
“Oh god, oh god, oh god…” Amber just kept repeating over and over, if she would have handled everything better, if she would have just kept her mouth shut when she met Sandy, if she would have been a bigger person…thoughts raced through her mind so fast she could barely keep up with them. Carter motioned to Luka and the two of them promptly entered the nearest trauma room leaving Amber to stand out there in tears. She stood out there for a while in complete shock before Dr. Lewis noticed her standing around in a daze.
“Amber?” She asked as she stepped up to the trembling woman, Amber burst into tears and threw her arms around Susan as she kept repeating how sorry she was that this had all happened. Lewis had no idea what was going on, she didn’t know that Weaver was the one in the trauma room with Carter and Luka and Amber wasn’t making anything more easy to understand. “Whoa, what’s going on here?”
“She slit her wrists! She’s…she tried to…what if she…” Amber spat out fragments of sentences and it took Dr. Lewis a moment to understand what the problem was. She tried looking over Amber’s shoulder into the trauma room but her view was blocked. Normally she would have gone in there herself and asked what the problem was but she was afraid that Amber might go into shock or pass out.
“Who? Who is she?”
“Kerry…Kerry…” Amber replied her voice getting very soft she pulled away from Susan and reached into her pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes. She figured that she might be able to calm down if she could just go outside and suck down some nicotine. It took another moment but Susan realized that it was Dr. Weaver in there and she was torn between who she should go help. Amber shoved past Abby and pushed some of the med students out of the way to get to the door she was now desperate for the cold air. When she got out there she sat down on the bench not even caring that it was covered in snow and shakily lit her cigarette. She took a few long drags and exhaled the smoke before putting her head in her hands and crying.
She didn’t know how long she had stayed like that, with her head in her hands and tears streaking her face but when Carter put a hand on her shoulder she looked up and wiped her face trying to hide the fact that she had just been crying.
“She’s going to be okay Amber.” Carter said in a rather soothing tone, Amber didn’t know how to respond to that. She knew it was terrible to think that it would have been easier if Kerry had just died because then she wouldn’t ever have to face her again. Now everything was different, she would have to talk to her or her conscious would remain dirty forever.
“Thank you Carter,” Amber sniffled and then wiped her nose on her sleeve and let out a little laugh of relief. Maybe she was just being silly sitting out here and crying, she didn’t know how she even felt about Weaver any more. “Can I see her?”
“Yeah actually she’s asking for you.” Carter said as he nervously gestured with his hands, it must have been terrible working on your own boss. Amber nodded and she wanted to apologize for ducking out on them when Weaver first arrived but her brain just wouldn’t let her speak she was too concerned with seeing Kerry again.
“Kerry?” Amber said softly as she took a step into the private recovery room, Weaver turned her head away from Amber. She thought it was funny that Weaver would give her the silent treatment especially after Carter said she had wanted to see her. “I’m sorry all of this is completely my fault, I should have handled it better I…”
“You of all people should know Amber, when some one attempts suicide it’s a selfish act and it’s no ones fault.” Weaver replied softly she had already recognized that this whole charade was her fault but she couldn’t blame Amber for thinking that she had a part in it too. “I didn’t do this because of something you or Sandy or anyone else did. I did this because I screwed up and I lost the woman I loved because I couldn’t break it off with a woman I didn’t.”
“Well you should have just let me know that you didn’t want a relationship any more I certainly wouldn’t have kicked your ass like that.” Amber replied as she moved closer to the bed only to see that Kerry was still wearing the ring she had bought her three weeks ago. That’s all Weaver had to remind her of Amber and Sandy had taken the baby and cut off all contact with her. She was selfish to use Sandy for a child while she intended to be with Amber and yet this whole time Amber was thinking that she was the one being used.
“No…I was using Sandy for a child, I love you.” Kerry whispered, Amber blinked a few times and then smiled slightly. After this whole thing with Sandy and her cheating and a baby Amber automatically assumed that Weaver was just using her because she was bored of her normal sex life. “I understand if you can’t stand the sight of me after this though it was stupid to try and kill myself.”
“If I didn’t want to see you I wouldn’t be here, and if I didn’t still love you I wouldn’t have sat down there and prayed for you to live.” Amber replied as she finally stepped up next to Weaver’s bed, she gently took her hand and squeezed it slightly. Weaver smiled and a stray tear slid down her cheek which she hastily wiped away, maybe things would work out between the two of them. Love was love no matter how you looked at it, and it could survive so many things. This time Amber was certain that love would definitely prevail.
