When she woke up there were quite a few people standing around her, her head was throbbing and she just wanted to go home. The last thing she remembered was being attacked in the parking lot and suffering a blow to the head, she didn’t actually pass out until she had stumbled into the lounge in a complete state of shock. It was possible to move and speak after a head injury if it wasn’t too serious and she had made out with a major concussion and a few scrapes.

Finally she’s awake, I guess I can’t really tell her what I wanted to tell her now can I? She heard a voice and she recognized it as Carter’s, she wondered what he wanted to tell her it sounded important. Dr. Amber McKay turned her head to see where his voice was coming from to see him standing at the door looking at her.

“What did you want to tell me Carter?” Amber said when he got closer, he looked at her like she was insane, he knew he didn’t say anything he just thought it.

“Huh?”

“You just said you wanted to tell me something, I’m okay now you can tell me.” She slowly sat up her head still throbbing, she put a hand to her forehead where there was a small lump forming off to the side. She touched it a little causing a flash of light to explode behind her eyes and she winced bringing her hand back down to her side.

“I didn’t say anything.” Carter replied looking over her charts, Amber shrugged and passed it off as something that her head injury had caused. Did I say that out loud? No that’s not possible I wasn’t even in the room when I thought that…or said that…what’s going on here? Okay just act normal.

“Are you okay Carter?” Amber asked with a slight look of concern on her face, she was confused because she could swear she heard him talking but his lips weren’t moving. She shook her head slightly and then rubbed her eyes hoping the phenomenon would correct itself.

“Yeah I’m fine, and you will be too Weaver just wants you to stay here for a little for observation.” Carter said trying to suppress a yawn, she knew that he was just getting off of his shift when she arrived and she suddenly felt bad that she was attacked cause it probably made him stay longer then he was expecting. She probably just wants to find an excuse to touch you…god I wish I was her…well with out all the bitchiness.

This time Amber decided not to respond to that hoping that she was just making things up, she certainly didn’t want to admit to anyone that she was some how hearing voices, or maybe even the thoughts of other people. He walked out of the room and she watched him trying to figure out what exactly was going on. She laid her head back on the pillow gently and looked at the IV they had put in her which she believed was completely unnecessary but she decided to leave it in till further notice she was too tired to deal with taking it out.

God what I wouldn’t do to her body when she’s passed out…too bad she was in the hospital…holy crap she’s awake.

She could swear that she just heard Romano say that about her, and when she checked to see if he was there it looked like he had just been passing by in the hall. She remembered that he was one of the people in the lounge when she had passed out. The only people who were in there at the time were him, Corday, Carter, and Weaver so she wasn’t surprised to find out that he was passing by to see how she was doing, even though he must have known it wasn’t a serious injury.

“Hey there Amber,” he just sort of poked his head in the doorway to talk to her, “Glad to see you are awake…you’ll be back on your feet in no time I hope.” He added, it was just like him to expect some one with an injury to get back to work, she got the feeling that if her head fell off he would hand her some duct tape and tell her to walk around till the bleeding stopped. She forced herself to smile at him and he paused to look at her one more time before heading off, I wonder what she looks like under that gown.

This time Amber was positive that she was reading someone’s mind, there was no mistaking that. There was no way Romano would have ever said that out loud but it was just chauvinistic enough to pass off as something that would run through his through process. She was a little concerned about what was happening but on the other hand it might be fun to see what the other doctors were thinking about her, and anyone else for that matter.

“Looking better I see,” Weaver said heading into the room to talk to her, “They caught the guy who attacked you he was pretty beat up you must take self defense courses.” She stepped up to the bed and Amber looked at her waiting to see if she could hear what Weaver was thinking too, that was of course if she was thinking anything or if she could read Weaver’s mind too. God I’m hungry and I think I really want some chocolate.

“Chocolate sounds really good right about now.” Amber blurted out forgetting the fact that she was hearing things people were only thinking. Weaver looked surprised by that comment, and Amber found it humorous that she was thinking about chocolate instead of being overly concerned about her fellow co-worker.

“Well I want you to stay here and rest for a while but no sleeping, you’re a doctor you know the drill.” She smiled at Amber, “Did they give you something for the pain?” she then handed Amber an ice pack to put on her forehead. God I wonder if she knows how sexy she is…

“No I don’t…I mean…I don’t need anything for the pain it’s not that bad.” She put the ice pack to her head and breathed a sigh of relief it certainly felt nice against her hot face. Was Weaver actually attracted to her? She had never been with another woman but she had also not ruled it out as a possibility in fact she had been questioning the idea ever since she had met Weaver, now it was almost clear to her that Kerry might have an interest in women too but she didn’t want to bring it up just yet.

“Okay well if you need anything just yell.” Weaver said sounding a little nervous like she was questioning the way Amber had responded to her question about the pain medication. She stepped out of the room and shut the door behind her, Amber laid back on the bed and kept the ice on her head thinking about how nice it was going to be to know what everyone was thinking for a change.

A few days later the lump on her head had vanished and she was back at work, even though she was still suffering from occasional headaches. She started to look forward to work but she soon learned that she could only hear the thoughts of Romano, Corday, Carter, and Weaver which wasn’t so bad because she thought that if she could hear what everyone was thinking all the time it would drive her insane. It was an odd thing and although she couldn’t medically explain it she didn’t mind having the power to read minds. She took a sip of her coffee as she pushed open the door to the lounge, she started to take off her jacket slowly looking at the people who were in there.

I wonder if I could talk Abby into a threesome with Amber…well that’s if Amber was interested in girls…or me for that matter. She heard Carter thinking, it was hard not to react to some of the things that she heard but she just sort of smiled at him and bit her tongue trying not to say anything about it. She guessed it was true about how guys thought about sex a lot because most of the things she had heard in the past few days from Romano and Carter were about her being naked or doing other things. Weaver and Corday on the other hand had much more personal and complicated things on their minds, not to mention thinking about what they were going to do when they finally got off their shifts. Don’t look at her boobs Carter or she’ll notice.

“Hey there John.” McKay said happily as she opened her locker and hung up her coat, she quickly checked her reflection in the mirror that hung in her locker and then shut the door. She picked up her coffee which she had set on the table and took another long sip, “How are things today?”

“Pretty slow actually…eerily slow.” He sort of let out a nervous laugh and Amber saw his eyes on her chest instead of her face which she didn’t exactly mind, she wasn’t like other women who flipped out when a man was being a pig, well when they were being subtle about it.

“Good because I’m tired.” She replied taking a seat on the couch to compose herself for a moment, it seemed like her head hurt a little more then usual this morning. She reached into her pocket and took out two Tylenol and swallowed them dry. Carter continued to look at her for a moment before leaving the lounge to return to whatever he was doing before he came in there. He was certainly a cute guy but now that she had an idea that Weaver might possibly be an option she decided to focus all of her attention on starting a relationship in that area.

I should definitely talk to her today…no she’s probably interested in every man in this ER…I’d be her last option…god these shoes are uncomfortable oh well I’ll deal with it. Amber looked up from her staring at the floor when she clearly heard Weaver’s voice in her head. She didn’t know what she was supposed to do about Kerry being interested in her, should she let off subtle hints that she was interested or should she just wait until Kerry said something…and what was it with the shoes? Weaver thought about how uncomfortable her shoes were almost every day since Amber had acquired this power maybe she should just wear other shoes.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Kerry said in a sort of rude tone, Amber rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands and then pushed herself onto her feet.

“Like what?” She started towards the door wishing that the pain killers would kick in a little faster then they were. Weaver turned and watched her as she was leaving, I knew it she hates me she thinks I’m such a bitch.

“I don’t hate you Kerry…everyone wears bad shoes sometimes.” That was the only thing she could think to reply with and it was a bad choice especially since she knew that Kerry hadn’t actually said any of those things out loud. Weaver didn’t reply instead she just stood there with a confused and shocked look on her face trying to figure out if she said something about her shoes hurting out loud, or about thinking that McKay hated her. “I should go now.” And with that she pushed out of the door leaving Kerry to wonder how Amber had been so dead on with her reply.

I wonder what I should have for lunch was the next thought she heard it came from Corday who was across the hallway from her talking to a patient Maybe I’ll order a pizza that way people will eat some of it and I won’t feel like a pig. Amber smiled as she passed Corday thinking about how good a slice of pizza would taste after her short meeting with Romano he wanted to see her for some reason but he didn’t exactly say why but coming from him it couldn’t be good.

“You wanted to see me?” she asked as she stepped into his office he looked up from what ever he was doing with a rather serious look on his face.

Go ahead ask her out instead of yelling at her this time. So that’s why he is always yelling at me for something Amber thought, he likes me. She thought that him yelling was an interesting way of showing his affection but she didn’t respond to that she just took a seat across from his desk.

“I’ve gotten a number of complaints from Weaver that you seem distracted over the past few days.” He said looking at her as he played with a pen in one of his hands. Not that Weaver does such a bang up job of things around here either.

“Yeah I’ve been having these headaches, I’m sorry I’ll try to pay more attention.” She said with a nervous smile she certainly didn’t want to be chewed out again.

“Well if these headaches are so bad maybe you should call in sick I don’t need you screwing something up around here, I already have to deal with all the crap Corday puts me though.” He said his voice getting slightly more annoyed then it was when he first started to talk to her. Stop being mean to her ask her out already.

“No, I’ll be fine my head doesn’t hurt today.” She replied crossing her legs slowly, he looked down at her legs letting his eyes trace up the smooth silky curves till he got to her skirt and she was pretty sure he was trying to look up her skirt. She cleared her throat and sat up more straight trying to pretend like she didn’t know he was eyeing her like a piece of candy. She hates me, she thinks that I’m an asshole.

“Well then stop wasting my time and get back to work.” He picked up the papers he was reading before she came in and started to read them again, or so she thought. Look busy so she’ll go away. Amber sighed loudly and got up from her chair looking at him for a moment wishing she could help him out in the dating department with out being a little too obvious about it. She left the office and headed back towards the ER to see what was going on down there. It was still moving pretty slow and she hoped that it didn’t mean there would be some huge trauma coming in a few minutes before her shift was over because that’s how things always seemed to work.

I’m too sexy for my shirt…to sexy for my shirt…so sexy yeah…She turned around to see Carter walking down the hall in his usual strut she started to giggle finally knowing what he was thinking when he did that. I’m too sexy for exam room 1... he passed Amber still maintaining a very serious look on his face, she started to laugh incredibly hard after he passed her, if only he knew that she had heard what he was thinking. She continued walking and as she turned her head to actually see where she was going she ran into Weaver.

She smells good.

“Trying paying a little more attention to where you are going alright Dr. McKay?” She snapped pushing past Amber like she couldn’t get away from her fast enough. God my feet hurt…so do my shoulders… Amber watch as Kerry stepped up to the front desk and set some things down and then stood there for a moment to compose herself. McKay took the opportunity to step up behind her and start to massage her shoulders gently wondering what kind of reaction that would get her. Mmmm that feels nice…I wonder whose touching me. She turned suddenly looking Amber in the eye, and she didn’t look very happy either.

“Hi.” Amber said nervously moving her hands away from Kerry’s shoulders, feeling incredibly embarrassed by her actions.

“What the hell did you think you were doing?” She growled softly, stop being aroused this is not the time or the place. She moved away from Amber with a sneer on her face and walked off down the hall, Amber slapped herself in the forehead trying to figure out what in the hell she had just done. How was she ever supposed to let Weaver know that she was interested if she kept pushing her away?

Did she just try to rub Kerry’s shoulders? I’d rather die then touch that woman. Elizabeth’s voice came from behind her, when she turned to look Corday wasn’t even paying attention to her or so it seemed. Amber felt like grabbing a chunk of her own hair and ripping it out things were starting to get quite frustrating maybe she was just going crazy maybe Weaver didn’t really think that she just thought that Weaver did. There was only one way to test her theory of mind reading powers and that was to tell one of the people that she could hear…but who was she going to tell? Romano would definitely flip out and fire her ass faster then she could finish the sentence, Carter would feel humiliated that she had heard his thoughts on having sex with her, and Weaver…well she didn’t know how Kerry would react but she got a feeling that it wouldn’t be in a good way. She guessed the only person she could tell now was Corday, and hope that she didn’t get laughed at.

“Elizabeth can I see you when you have a minute?” She said stepping up to Corday, Lizzie nodded and set down the clipboard she was holding.

“I’m free now.” She smiled and Amber took her arm and gently lead her into the lounge looking around to make sure no one was in there first. “What is this about?”

“I think I can read people’s minds.” Amber whispered looking around, feeling paranoid about anybody else hearing her. Corday didn’t know what she was supposed to say, how does anyone respond to a statement like that.

“I think you were hit on the head a little too hard…” Elizabeth responded making a step towards the door, I think I better report this to Romano.

“No don’t tell Romano he’ll freak out.” Amber said not caring now that she was exposing the fact that she could hear what people think. Corday stopped in her tracks and looked back at McKay for a moment wondering how she knew that she was on her way to Romano’s office.

“Lucky guess.” She still didn’t make another attempt to leave, being more intrigued by this now then scared that Amber was losing her mind. “Lets try this again…”

“Try what…”

“I’m going to think about something really weird and you tell me what it is.” The tone of her voice had changed from condescending to excited almost as if she was hoping that this was really going to work. Amber nodded and then sat down on the near by couch to wait for Corday to think about something. Corday closed her eyes like she was thinking really hard, and that made Amber wonder why people did that when they thought some one was reading their mind, if she had the power all along Lizzie wouldn’t need to scrunch her face up like that.

“A purple elephant with green spots, no blue spots, the letter H, now you are changing the elephant to pink with yellow spots…will you make up your mind?” Amber said looking at her with a smile on her face, Elizabeth slowly opened her eyes to look at Amber wondering how she was doing this was it some sort of trick?

“How did you…how do I know this isn’t one of those mind tricks.” She said as she started to pace back and fourth across the room, it seemed to elaborate to actually be a mind trick but she had seen some pretty strange magic tricks in her life.

“Think of something about your life that I couldn’t possibly know…something that happened to you today or years ago…something that I was never around to know about.” Amber replied looking down at her hands, she yawned slightly not because she was bored but because she was annoyed that it was taking so long for some one to believe her. Corday pulled up a chair and sat down across from Amber who was still on the couch and looked at her intensely, once again like she was trying to transmit her thoughts.

“He baby proofed every drawer in the house even before the baby was born? What a weirdo.” Amber said, the look on Corday’s face was one of complete shock, how did she do that? This must not be a trick Amber had not been there long enough to know that much about Mark.

“Oh my god this is for real isn’t it?”

“Yeah but before you go around announcing it to the world I should tell you that I can only read the thoughts of three other people in the ER. Strangely enough they were the other three people in the room when I passed out, Romano, Carter, and Weaver.”

“You can hear what Weaver’s thinking? God what I wouldn’t do to be able to know that.” Corday laughed and stood up from her chair. Amber sort of laughed too, if she only knew that most of the time Kerry thought about how tight her shoes were and how much she wanted some chocolate. “Does Carter think anything interesting?”

“Well he thinks he’s too sexy for exam room one…” Amber giggled and Corday gave her an odd look, “You know like the song?”

“Oh…really? He sings that in his head?”

“Yeah, you know when he’s walking down the hall like he owns the place that’s what he’s thinking.” Amber and Corday started to laugh really hard when Weaver walked into the lounge. Amber looked at Lizzie like she was begging her not to say anything about this, Corday got the message and nodded her head slightly and got up to leave.

“What’s so funny?” Weaver said as she refilled her cup of coffee, Corday snickered and ducked out of the door before Weaver could ask anymore questions. I hope they weren’t talking about me again, who am I kidding that’s probably why they were laughing.

“Nothing, we were just talking.” Amber stood up and stretched slightly she only had an hour of work to go but it seemed like it was going to be a life time. “So when you get off of work do you want to get something to eat?”

Is she asking me out on a date or is she just being nice…a meal is a meal and at least I won’t have to be alone.

“Sure, sounds like a good idea…what’s the occasion?” She replied as she absentmindedly stirred her coffee before taking a sip.

“No occasion just…I would really enjoy your company that’s all.” After hearing what Kerry thought about her she felt bad, and she certainly didn’t want the woman to think that she hated her, the price of a meal was a small price to pay if she could give Kerry a little more confidence.

The meal was a quiet one, but it wasn’t uncomfortable one. Amber had taken Kerry to her favorite restaurant, it was called Tommy’s and although it was very small and out of the way they had some of the best food she had ever tasted. Every so often Amber would look over to Kerry to see how she was doing, she didn’t mean to be nosey by monitoring her thoughts be she hadn’t yet figured out how to shut them out. Why is she looking at me? She wants me to say something first…or maybe she thinks I’m going to say something so she’s waiting to say something…is this a date? No she probably just wanted to be friendly, how the hell am I supposed to know what this means to her?

“Do you like the food? All of it is completely organic even the meat.” Amber said feeling stupid that she couldn’t think of anything else to talk about, no one cared if the food was organic she didn’t even care about that. She looked back down at her salad and slowly took another bite trying to keep herself from blushing.

“Yeah the food is great here, I didn’t even know about this place I’m glad you decided to bring me here.” She replied honestly reaching for the bottle of beer that was sitting in front of her, she didn’t usually drink beer but this didn’t seem like a wine kind of place and she needed to have something to calm her nerves. I’ll know if she decides to kiss me, but what if she doesn’t kiss me because she thinks I’m too intimidating? This is too confusing I better find a way to get out of here right now.

“Don’t leave Kerry…this is only a date if you want it to be.” Amber finally said getting annoyed with hearing about how worried she was, she never had pictured Weaver to be the type of woman to be so self conscious she seemed to proud but everything was in her head McKay was definitely getting a different impression about the woman who she thought was a bitch.

“What? Oh my god did I say that out loud?” She looked around and then glanced at her watch feeling embarrassed as she desperately tried to grasp for an excuse to move it. Amber reached over and put her hand on Weaver’s arm gently trying to get her to calm down. No I didn’t say that out loud how did she know…

“No, you didn’t say anything I just got this feeling.” Amber reassured her keeping her hand gently on Weaver’s now shaky arm. Weaver sort of nodded and then carefully pulled her arm away wondering how Amber could get a feeling that was so directly mirrored by what she had just been thinking. Amber raised her hand slightly to get the waiter’s attention so he would bring them the check. She didn’t think she was ever going to tell Kerry about the little talent that she had but what if it never went away? Then what was she supposed to do? Just ignore everything everyone around her ever thought until she died…well retired from her job. She didn’t want to have to leave her current position because of this, she didn’t even know what kind of excuse she would come up with for quitting and it would have to be a good one if she ever wanted a job again. The waiter brought over the check and she handed him a credit card with out even looking to see how much it was, she knew the place was quite expensive because the food was organic but she was more worried about getting Kerry out of there so she would stop freaking out about everything.

“How about we go back to my place it’s more intimate there.” Amber said reaching for her keys, she had driven them there and she was ready to get the hell home with or without Weaver joining her. The waiter came back and dropped off the credit card, she took it and slipped it into her wallet and then put her wallet in her purse.

“Sure, that sounds like a good idea.” She stood up and pulled her jacket on, If she makes the first move then I’ll know for sure. Amber smiled at her and they headed out of the restaurant together.

Everything started slow, Amber made some tea and sat down next to Weaver on her couch, her dog hopped into her lap and she petted her softly as they slowly sipped their tea. Amber didn’t exactly know what to do or say she had heard everything that Weaver was thinking, but she was still afraid to make the first move who knew what would develop if she did.

“Do you want me to kiss you?” Amber blurted out suddenly, the tension was getting to her. She felt her chest tighten and the butterflies in her stomach were unmistakable, Kerry looked at her like she was shocked that some one actually ask that before doing it. Yes I want you to kiss me…why the hell else would I come to your apartment? Amber leaned over and set her tea on the coffee table, and Weaver mimicked her actions and then turned to face Amber. Without another word Amber leaned in and kissed Weaver softly, just the lips no open mouth stuff but it quickly progressed into an all out make out session. Weaver’s hands were all over Amber in seconds and Amber was happy to return the favor she kissed back feverishly her hands running over Weaver’s back. Don’t let it go any farther then this I don’t want her to think you’re easy. Amber pulled her head away from the kiss gently and then rested her forehead against Weaver’s breathing hard. They stayed like that for a moment before Iwata barked and jumped off of Amber’s lap, Amber knew she was going to have to take Iwata for a walk and it was a good excuse to end things the way they were.

“I need to take her for the wall before she pees on something.” Amber said forcing herself to stand up and move away from the wonderful woman on her couch. Part of her felt bad because she was ahead of the game and she knew everything that Weaver was thinking. “Besides, as a rule I don’t tend to sleep with anyone on the first date.”

“That’s a good rule.” Weaver said sounding disappointed, this is what she wanted right? Now she wasn’t so sure, she didn’t think she had ever felt this way about anyone so fast it was almost as if Amber knew her inside and out. Little did she know that this was going to be the start of a wonderful relationship.
