Arrived in Will County, IL in 1833-34. (see http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilwill) Purchased land

between 1835 and 1844 (Illinois land purchase records 0nline)

From MyFamily Hyland (private) website, hosted by Barry Odgers:

They came to Illinois near Chicago (Plainfield) where they bought land for so many shillings an acre

(less then a dollar). Benjamin was engaged in drawing flour on a canal, near Plainfield. Benjamin had

a license to preach in the free Methodist Church. He left 3 years provisions in the house for his family

when he left, but the house burned down and most of these were lost. The family moved into a house

that was built of black walnut logs. Benjamin belonged to a band of men who arranged to help the slaves

over into Canada, where they would be free. He had a store room built under the floor of his barn were the

slaves were kept till he had the opportunity to haul them to Chicago where a man had a boat. He was a

grain shipper, but he was also loading the boats with slaves and taking them across Lake Michigan to

freedom. He had a wagon with a false bottom in the bed. He would haul grain and produce on the top part

and slaves in the bottom.

In 1852 came across the plains with 3 sons - Amos, Benjamin and Burnham.  Left Abigail his wife and

Edward, Mary Ann and Sylvia, in Illinois. Benjamin returned to Illinois to take the rest of his family to Oregon

by going across the Isthmus of Panama, or around the Horn. Unable to persuade Abigail to return, he departed

(by boat) and returned to Oregon were he remarried [Louise Taylor] and raised another family.
