Edward T. Hyland & Sarah Catherine Funk

Edward T. Hyland (parents Benjamin Hyland and Abigail Damon) was

born 24 Mar 1843 in Plainfield, Will, Illinois. He died 13 Feb 1885

  in Casey, Guthrie, IA.

Edward in the 100th Illinois Regiment & was seriously wounded at

Battle of Stone's River, TN. Lived until 1885. Casualty list from

  100th IL reg:   http://www.outfitters.com/illinois/history/civil/cw100-5.html

Census of Will County 1860 shows Edward's age as 17, born in

Illinois. Also shows the head of household as "Abbie", 55 years of

age, male, farmer, born in MA. Abigail was by herself at the time

while Benjamin was in OR. Also living there were Edward's sisters

Mary A., age 20 and Sylvia, age 12.

Letter from Benjamin F. Hyland dated 29 Jul 1867 says that ET was

keeping hotel (the old Plainsfield House).

Note on Mrs. McCoy's letter says "Edward was in Civil War and was

shot with bullet lodged near his heart but lived 20 years. Amos

visited him after he had been in Oregon 20 years says Ira Hyland."

There was an Edward Hyland or Hiland wounded at the Battle of

Stone's River, TN. 100th Illinois Regiment.

Census of Plainfield, Will, IL enumerated on 11 August 1870 shows

Edward Hyland as head of household (flourish on H almost makes the

surname appear as Heyland"): dwelling number 169, family 164. Shows

Edward as age 28, his profession appears to be a Pump Maker. Living

with him are Sarah (born New York), age 27; Mary, age 6; Franklin

age 4' George age 2. Also living there are George Price, age 26,

born in Pennsylvania, also a Pump Maker and Abbagail Hyland, age 66,

born in Vermont. Edward and children are shown as born in Illinois.

Value of real estate $2,500; value of personal estate $600. NOTE:

there is a Wayne Hyland on same page, appears to be from household

168; age 3. First listing on same page, appears to be a carry-over

from previous page (which I don't have). Listed following in same

household are farm laborers: Horatio Lockwood, George Cribbs, and

House worker, Mary Cropsey. Sounds like Granville's family. Also of

nterest, William Dinges and Mary Ann Hyland (Edward's sister) are

listed as household 170, family 165.

  Sarah's obituary has the following:

Mrs. Hyland was married on July 17th, 1863 to Edward T. Hyland who

was a soldier in the civil war. After his first enlistment he

returned home to make arrangements for his marriage, but before this

event was solemnized a second call to enlistment came and he[ ] the

colors September, 1862. He was seriously wounded at the Battle of

Stone River, Tenn. January [ ] 1863 and after being nursed back to

health by his wife-to-be they were married in July of that year.

Some years after their marriage they moved to Iowa and here Mr.

Hyland was given half a section of land by the Government. Iowa at

that time was largely a virgin state. In 1865 they returned to

Illinois and remained there for eleven years. Afterwards they came

back to Iowa and settled in Lake City, Calhoun County. In the summer

of 1880 they moved to Casey and here in the same home Mrs. Hyland

has lived fifty-two years. One child was born in this town; a son,

Raymond, who lies buried in Oregon.

There are three children surviving their mother. Doctor George who

holds an executive position in the National Capitol, Ernest who

lives on the Pacific Coast and who is at present engaged in a

responsible business post and Clarence who has lived for two years

with his mother and who is well known and respected in this area.

Letter from a friend in Casey, Guthrie County, Iowa

  Dear Amy:

After typing Sarah Hyland's obituary, I realized they lived in

Calhoun County, Iowa, where John Neitzel apparently lived when he

and Mamie were married, so I've now obtained the 1880 census for

Lake City for the Hylands. The researcher has written along the edge

of the first page they lived in Lake City. Apparently Sarah's mother,

Mary A. Funk, was visiting along with Sarah's sister Eliza and two of her

children. Also there was an Andrew Lang working for  the Hylands.

There is a smudge across Sadie's name, but apparently the

census taker didn't really know how to spell Sadie. I've found in a

number of cases, including my own grandparents here in Casey, when

the census taker didn't know how to spell the names and since they

were friends and neighbors, they were reluctant to ask for

  spellings.
