Campout Update and Other Exciting info Worth Reading from the President:

We are almost ready for the campout.  We are looking forward to everyone attending!!!  This is also a particularly special year.  Our club is celebrating it's 10th year!  Yep it is true, the first official Timberworts meeting was held 10 years ago this last spring.  Although no one remembered it until Leo found a old newsletter the other day.  So HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US.

Here are the campout highlights we have been planning for.  Friday night we will have the deep fryer going.  If anyone wants to bring stuff to fry, super.  There is no plan for food other than we will provide a deep fryer and a campfire on Friday so bring stuff to fend for yourself.  On Saturday, we have arranged for a tour of

Minnesota Malting at 11:00.  We will leave from the campgrounds around 10:30 and return before the judging starts in the afternoon.  Please bring a bottle of something to give to the tour guide as a thank you.  Saturday night we will be having smoked turkey.  We have also invited the Rochester Purplefoot Winemaking club to join us for part of the evening.  It should be fun for all.  See you all there.

WHAT THE CLUB MEMBERS NEED TO KNOW

So far I have the following people bringing the following items

Peter Sanders - grill for campfire, garden hose, backflow preventer and other stuff for waterhook up, 2 H2O dispensers

Jim White - garden hose, 3-4 coolers, canopy, 1 H20 dispenser (5gal) and a picnic table

Wayne - Fogger, 2 big coolers

Leo - Wood (but need to find someone to hauul)

We could still use a couple of folding picnic style tables.  There are tables available but a few would not hurt.  Also, could use some more people to bring some wood.  I still need help with making signs and getting set up on Friday afternoon.

Wazionja Campgrounds

6450 120th St NW

Pine Island, MN 55963

507-356-8594

The campground is located on Wazionja Road  - it is the first road on the

left going north out of Oronoco on HWY 52, about a mile north of the Conoco

station.  The campground is on the left about a 1/2 mile down Wazionja road.  There are signs (MnDot)  for the campground on 52.

If you are planning to bring a large camper or RV, you will need to contact the campground and request a location near the ‘interclub campout’ site(if that is your desire).

Leo Vitt will be distributing ‘brewing kits’ to several clubs that are planning to attend the campout.  The idea is to have a tasting competition at the campout.  If your club is planning to attend and desires a kit, please contact Leo Vitt(lvitt4@yahoo.com).  Any questions?  Leo is also your answer man!!

$3.00 per head for the weekend of tent camping, in the lower field -- there is a nice wooded area back away from everyone else.

If anyone needs RV spots - the nearest RV spot to this wooded area is about 120 yards - RV spots are $15.00 a night - includes electricity and water hookups, no sewer hookups but there is a dump station available.

The Great Taste of the Midwest

August 11th is not that far away!!  Tickets have gone on sale as of May 1st.  Several club members are planning to stay at the Best Western Inn on the Park, which is located next to the capitol building in downtown Madison(and a reasonable walking distance to the pubs).  Their phone is (800) 279-8811.  They have a two night minimum stay.  More information is available at:

From Pam King(repeat):

Hey All,

The Timberworts have arranged for a tour of Minnesota Malting on Saturday August 4th at 11:00 a.m.!!!

Minnesota Malting is located in Cannon Falls about 1/2 hour away from our campsite in Wazionja.  We will be leaving from the campsite around 10:30 a.m. and I am assuming we will be back by 1:00 p.m.  If you want to meet us there let me know and I will get you the directions.  I can be reached at pam.king@courts.state.mn.us or kingwarp@rconnect.com

Some of our members have toured this plant before and say that it is a really interesting tour.  I hope everyone will be able to make it.

If you plan on going on the tour please bring a bottle of homebrew with you to give to the tour guide as a thank you.

ALSO - if you are planning on coming down onn Friday night we will have a deep fryer at the campsite so you may bring stuff to cook if you want.

See you there

ps.  Please forward this message to all your friends

From Dave Berg:

As if you need any more reasons, here is yet another to attend the Autumn Brew Review.

On September 8th, two places in the world will be pouring the brand new Summit Oktoberfest - the Summit Open House (which is by invite only) and the Autumn Brew Review.

Tickets available through http::/www.ticketworks.com There may be some very limited amounts available at the door, but I wouldn't bank on it. We are limiting sales to 3000 tickets.  Keep in mind we sold over 500 for

the pub crawl, and that was only advertised in the 8 participating brewpubs.  We're blanketing the state with posters for this one, so tickets will go fast.

For a very limited time at the Water Tower, we will be serving some well-aged Seeing Dubbel Anniversary Ale.  This Belgian strong-style beer was brewed last December for our Anniversary.  Get some while you can!

From Wayne Theuer:

Hi Ken,

I forgot to tell you that Dave's IPA is in the dry-hopping stage right now and should be on tap at the Water Tower next week. Dave has used Sterling in this IPA. Should be good!!

Hi Ken,

This is an interesting take on Mead making from Gary Sinnen. Gary is a very good mead maker.

Cheers,

Wayne

Mike

If you use your fruits and spices right you will never have to use acids which I have not used any in over 5 years I don’t like the stuff.

As far as the yeasts go The way I like to go is fined two or three yeasts you like and work the yeast by seeing how much honey will give you a dry, medium or sweet with the one yeast. 1#, 2#,3# of honey etc.

I boil my water with Irish moss for 15 min cool add honey and pitch.

I have not used campden or any thing else and I have had mead in the carboy for over three years with no odd flavors just keep the lock full.

My two cents worth

Subject: 15 gallon mash tun for sale or trade

I've got a converted Sanke keg, set up as a mash tun, with a stainless steel false bottem, a stainless pick up tube, 1/2 inch ball valve and brass fitting that I'm interested in selling.

Would also trade for a grain mill or a 10 gallon Polarware pot.

Email me if interested.
