MINNESOTA TIMBERWORTS

The January 2002 Rochester Homebrew Club Newsletter

We come off of a great year for the beer club.  We hold memories of the June club campout, the August interclub blowout, and many great meetings, crawls, and trips.  If it weren't for that big crappy bad thing in September, it would have been an all around great year.  I hope that this coming year is even better for the club!

To kick start the coming year we have the …

New Ulm Bock Fest

New Ulm Bock Fest is scheduled for Feb 9.  See Bockfest   (http://www.newulm.com/cvb/index.htm)

Location:   Schell's Brewery - South on Broadway (Highway 14), turn west on 18th South, follow signs.

Dates/Times: Saturday, February 9, 2002, 11:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Help chase winter away at this ALL OUTDOOR EVENT. Enjoy hearty beers plus non-alcoholic beverages, hospitality, music and great food, sausages, soup, cheese and bread sticks. Join around the bonfires to meet and greet people and friends. Take a brewery tour, and of course, spend some time in the museum and gift shop. The Bock (goat) is an ancient symbol of winter - gruff and stubborn. Seven "Bocks of Winter" are hiding in and near Flandrau State Park. Use the clues to help capture the bocks.

Prizes for each Bock captured. $100 for the King Bock. Time is from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on February 9, 2002.

Polish Meads over the Internet

Word on the street was that some Polish meads were accessible though ordering on-line, so we went to Susan Ruud for the facts. Here's what she reports.

I haven't ordered Piast but 3 other Polish Meads.  They may be from the same company as they come in the same type bottle.  All are very excellent.  I ordered them from a company in Washington - Liquid Solutions.  The owner is Matt Maples.  I found his business on Mead Lovers Digest.  His e-mail address is Matt_Maples@liquidsolutions.ws

He also has a web page:  www.liquidsolutions.ws

It was rather expensive ordering (About $170+ for a case of 12).  Shipping kills you.  But sometimes it is worth it. :-).

The Word from Wayne Theurer

After early morning beer shopping in Twin Towns today, I stopped by the Water Tower to see our old friend Dave Berg. As usual the beers were great!! Dave gave me a sample of the Barleywine and it was fantastic!! Look for this superb beer to be on around the first of the year, I hope!! Stopping in at the Water Tower really makes me appreciate the brewers!! I like having one brewer/brewers for each brewpub. Fermentus interruptus might make money but, it's doubtful if it will ever match the quality of beer with the

Complexities, depth of flavor and wonderful nose/aromas that our good friends, the brewers, create for us at their brewpubs.(I got carried away) Stop in at Hops south and try Bob's Oatmeal Stout if you get in the area.  Also, start thinking about clearing your calendars for a pub crawl, the week before the "I Love Beer" pub crawl. I will work on the dates and arrange the transportation & hotel. Got a driver in mind???

Cheers,  Wayne

Cornelius Kegs from Greg!

I heard about a great deal on 5 gallon Cornelius kegs. The Green Bay Rackers brewing club has made arrangements to offer these kegs at $12.00 ea.  According to their web site these kegs are in great condition. Shipping would probably more than double the cost but if enough members are interested, I think couple of us could be coerced into a road trip to pick them up.  Their website is http://www.rackers.org/kegs.shtml According to my source there are as many as several thousand of these kegs available.

Greg Renkly

Caught this little blurb in the "This Is True" newsletter.

I MAKE MY OWN BEER -- and created a label for it that notes its called "Get Out of Hell Free Dark Ale" after the infamous GOOHF cards available on my web site. (Like the card, the label shows Uncle Pennybags leaping over the fiery pit of hell, except on the label he's holding a bottle of ale. ;-)  A few nights ago we had some friends over for dinner, and they brought their daughter -- a freshman at a local high school. Her dad, being a big fan of my Czech-inspired recipe, asked for some, so I pulled out a bottle. I saw the label catch the girl's eye. A big smile came over her face, so I held it up for her to look at it, thinking she recognized it from her own Monopoly(R) game.  Nope! "That's just like the cards we have at school!" she said.   "Everybody has them!" It's difficult to leave ME speechless, but that just about did it! And I know if I don't include the URL here, I'll get 50 e-mails asking for it: http://www.thisistrue.com/goohf.html . But if that's too hard to remember, http://www.GetOutOfHellFree.com works too.

Cheers!  James

The Hymn to Ninkasi - Making Beer

The Hymn to Ninkasi, inscribed on a nineteenth-century B.C. tablet, contains a recipe for Sumerian beer.)

Translation by Miguel Civil

Borne of the flowing water (...)

Tenderly cared for by the Ninhursag,

Borne of the flowing water (...)

Tenderly cared for by the Ninhursag,

Having founded your town by the sacred lake,

She finished its great walls for you,

Ninkasi, having founded your town by the sacred lake,

She finished its great walls for you

Your father is Enki, Lord Nidimmud,

Your mother is Ninti, the queen of the sacred lake,

Ninkasi, Your father is Enki, Lord Nidimmud,

Your mother is Ninti, the queen of the sacred lake.

You are the one who handles the dough, [and] with a big shovel,

Mixing in a pit, the bappir with sweet aromatics,

Ninkasi, You are the one who handles the dough, [and] with a big shovel,

Mixing in a pit, the bappir with [date]-honey.

You are the one who bakes the bappir in the big oven,

Puts in order the piles of hulled grains,

Ninkasi, you are the one who bakes the bappir in the big oven,

Puts in order the piles of hulled grains,

You are the one who waters the malt set on the ground,

The noble dogs keep away even the potentates,

Ninkasi, you are the one who waters the malt set on the ground,

The noble dogs keep away even the potentates.

You are the one who soaks the malt in a jar

The waves rise, the waves fall.

Ninkasi, you are the one who soaks the malt in a jar

The waves rise, the waves fall.

You are the one who spreads the cooked mash on large reed mats,

  Coolness overcomes.

The filtering vat, which makes a pleasant sound,

Treasurer's Report

It's a new year, and once again dues are due.  Catch me at the next meeting and settle up and we will keep this club humming along.  As always it's $10 per person or $15 per couple.  I will bring membership cards to Leo's on Saturday.

We carried $49.59 over from 2001, and we have 18 paid members and $194.59 in the coffers.

If any member wishes to see the books, just let me know and I will send them the Excel spreadsheet.  Printed copies on request.
