If you are looking for scenery,
Switzerland is the place, period. The green of the grass coupled
with the snow capped peaks makes for a scene with "Sound of Music" like
qualities. However it is one of the most expensive places in the world
to play. Nothing in Switzerland is cheap, except for the chocolate that
is.
Golf still has the elite only status that once existed in the
rest of Europe. In fact to play here, Swiss residents must pass both
a written and an on-course exam. Then and only then are they allowed to
play. Any visitors to courses in Switzerland must therefore have
proof of a handicap. This is obtained from your club pro in the form of
a letter, or a handicap card from the USGA.
I lived for several months on a golf course in a town called Domat-Ems.
Located at 600m altitude in the Alps it is quite frankly the most picturesque
golf I have ever played (except for Ireland of course).
Golf Club Domat/EMS (++41 81 633 3212) is situated in a valley between
three 3000m peaks, put simply, unbelievable scenery. Many times in the
spring I found myself wearing shorts on the course amidst the snowcapped
peaks only a few hundred metres above. Quite a strange feeling.
GC Domat/EMS has an 18 hole course, a nine hole course, and a driving range.
The nine hole is worth playing but not great. The 18 hole on the other
hand is magnificent, with the exception of two or three holes, it's championship
quality. However, as I said before, nothing is cheap here. GCDE will set
you back about 80 dollars a round.
Overall golf in Switzerland can be an extremely enjoyable experience. The
best scenery is to be found in the south of the country, i.e.. in the Alps.
Just make sure to bring plenty of cash and have fun.
