Weather
Rain
First off, if you are used to playing in the US, you're in for surprise.
I'm sure you've heard at least something about the Irish weather, it's
not a question of whether or not it will rain, but how often and for how
long.
Don't worry it is not really that bad. Generally the conditions are
overcast and you will have only a few showers throughout the day.
Rain storms or heavy rain are very rare. Often times it is individual clouds
sprinkling on you and it is not uncommon to be bathed in sunshine and yet
still have rain.
However, there have been very dry summers in Ireland, and while not
the norm, there are sure to be a few weeks of beautiful weather. Usually
July and August are the best months.
The moral of the story is invest in a decent rain suit, both the jacket
and pants. They should be more than adequate to let you keep playing, and
enjoying your round. Umbrellas are sometimes useful, but more often than
not the next atmospheric condition will make them more of a nuisance than
anything else. That is the wind.
Wind
Ok, It's going to be windy. Like the rain, wind is something inherent
to the Irish weather. Obviously links courses are windier than parkland,
but both will have wind except on the rarest of days.
Again this is not something to be afraid of. The wind adds a certain
aspect to the course which generally enhances it charm rather than take
it away. Moral you will probably need a wind breaker / rain jacket.
If you ever watched The Open Championship (British Open) you will
have a good idea of the conditions in Ireland.
Sun
Despite everything I have said, there is sun in Ireland. In fact
it can get quite hot in summer. However the heat only exists when
standing in the sun, huh? I mean that unlike in hot countries, standing
the shade will be significantly cooler than the sun. The difference can
feel as much as 20 degrees F.
You may need shorts, but playing in pants is the norm, and the tendency
is for it to get cooler rather than warmer.
Conclusion
Ireland has a temperate climate, never really hot, but never really
cold either. Storms are very rare, and the weather often blows off within
a few minutes. The afternoons will probably be quite warm, but always in
the evenings it gets cool. Be aware of this when you plan a tee time.
For the most part the weather here is fairly consistent, partly
cloudy, bit of wind, and the odd shower.
Bring a rain suit and most of your troubles will be solved. Hopefully
you'll never need it, but it pays to be prepared. That's why I'm here.
Below are the CURRENT weather conditions for East and West coasts.
