Tri-X Pan Film In An EC
Since Tri-X Pan film is my favorite black and white film, bar none, for use in 35mm format I always have a bulk roll of it laying around the house. Therefore it was the natural choice for my first experiments with "fast" film in my EC. Yes, I knew the grain would be somewhat excessive, but for the first roll I just wanted to see if the slow lens in the EC would allow me to use it for available light photography. After developing my first roll I found that the EC did perform quite well in many low light situations despite its slow lens as long as I was very aware of the lighting. I also was pleasantly surprised with the overall look of my prints despite the characteristic Tri-X grain. The prints do verge on what many photographers derogatively refer to as "art," but accepting that, many of the prints have a very pleasing feel to them. While I can often times fool my viewers into thinking I used a "real camera" for my Techpan prints the comments regarding these Tri-X prints always start out "did you take these with your spy camera?" These are what people expect to see from a "spy camera," though that doesn't mean that you can't like them.
Note that all photos were scanned on an ancient Mustec scanner from 4x5 originals. Film developed in ID-11 1:1 at Ilford's recommended times.
