Techpan 400

In an effort to find a fast fine grained alternative to the standard grainy 400 speed films, like Tri-X and Delta Pro 400, I ran a test roll of Kodak Technical Pan film rated at 400 ASA and developed it for 36 minutes in TD-3 (68F and agitated following Procedure A).  In general I was blown away with the results.  I got less grain than is usual with normal 100 speed films, such as Tmax 100 and Delta Pro 100, the only down side was a strong increase in contrast especially with high contrast subjects.  The following photos were taken at a local park at or right after sunset with my Minox C set on automatic; it was much darker than these photos suggest.  Shutter speeds were 1/30th or below.

           

Note that in the originals there actually is quite a bit of shadow detail probably not shown in your browser version, for instance there is actually good tonal detail apparent in the pupils of their eyes.  These were printed straight out without using any variable contrast filters.
